Wonder if Renard has seen how much Ysengrin's gardening has improved.
ETA: you know, I reread this chapter, and once I got to the part where Coyote gives his strength and Annie is concerned, my thought was Wheatley saying "Surprise! We're doing it now."

Except Jack would not win a beanstalk growing competition against that thing

So... Seed Bismuth surpassed by Seed Ysengrin? The Beta and Ypsilon!

So... Seed Bismuth surpassed by Seed Ysengrin? The Beta and Ypsilon! If Coyote gave Ysengrin his powers of gardening, then maybe he gave his powers of Bismuth manipulation (very niche) to another creature.

Back after busyworktimes... OK, here's the skinny. Coyote's TRUE strength is his cunning. He NEVER gave that away. What he gave Ysengrin is more like his ability to F*ck Sh!t Up. The main flaw in the free Maserati, it seems, is that the brake cables are cut. Note that this technicality (of it not exactly being him) enables him to handily bypass the last panel of this: gunnerkrigg.com/?p=792Coyote is a devil on a breathtaking scale that makes Baphomet look like a second-grade teacher. This is WAR.

Less Sleeping Beauty, more Jack and the Beanstalk. Looks like Kat will need to go Neon Genesis Evangelion on his as... trunk pretty soon.

Now, if this tree will turn out to be a bit like the Whomping Willow, the court is in even much bigger trouble than we already suspect.
However, I would expect the Court to have some defence systems in place to deal with forest threats. And I hope that system is Jones :-)

I have a hunch that Coysengrin might be constructing a bridge on his own terms.

Back after busyworktimes... OK, here's the skinny. Coyote's TRUE strength is his cunning. Though this might be considered a sub-set of his cunning, I think that one of Coyote's greatest strengths is his being funny, playing the clown. The result is that people are so busy laughing at his antics that they overlook the danger he poses, how thoroughly untrustworthy he is. (By contrast, the Court leadership is coldly serious - so we find it harder to excuse their actions.) If this is indeed Coyote at work here (not Ysengrin with Coyote's powers, but Coyote possessing Ysengrin's body and pretending to be Ysengrin with Coyote's powers), the Court's only hope for survival would be if he gets bored and decides to do something else - or remembers in time that, if you smash all your toys, you won't have anything left to play with.

We can assume this laboratory was in use, so a serious chance people got killed. What if it is, or is close to the lab where Paz volunteers?

We can assume this laboratory was in use, so a serious chance people got killed. What if it is, or is close to the lab where Paz volunteers? That one was brought up in the commentary on the previous page; people said that Paz works with animals rather than with plants - though we still don't know for certain. If people do get killed, this will definitely be the point where whichever canid is responsible for this has crossed the line (even more so if this really is Coyote behind it); killing people isn't funny (unless you have a really sick sense of humor). You can't pass that sort of thing off as mere cartoony slapstick like knocking Ysengrin about back in Chapter Fourteen. Let's hope that those were more of those empty buildings like the one Coyote toppled over on his last visit to the Court.

Could be a weekday and Annie/Smitty got pulled out of class to go visit the Forest. Paz might be in class, in the dorms or helping Kat at the workshop or something, not necessarily in the vet lab. I really hope Paz isn't hurt, it seems like she's just there to be Kat's girlfriend at the moment after her brief time in the sun. I think it'd be a waste of her as a character to be used as a motivating/guilt object.

As a further thought - if again, this is really Coyote doing this, pretending to be Ysengrin with Coyote's powers - could it be that part of this is not just to get around his promise to leave the Court alone, but also the fact that the kind of destruction he's dealing out now isn't funny - that it would mean, if he did it "as himself", the end of his comical Trickster role?

I still can't believe the court just put the seeds in little jars on a shelf and left it at that. They don't even look like they were dissected or anything. It really shows how little they think of the forest folk, for them to ignore such a completely obvious trick/trap.

That one was brought up in the commentary on the previous page Ah, I wasn't paying attention. Just quick note: THOSE BETTER NOT BE IN ANY LAB PAZ IS WORKING IN, BECAUSE IF SHE GETS HURT, IT'LL BE FOREST GOD AGAINST MECHA ETHER GOD BATTLE EXTRAVANGANZA! Something like that. Or at least it will be a different comic after that.

(which we also don't need more of.)

So, talking about escalations - does the Court have nukes? I recall there was a reactor mentioned somewhere in the comic, but I might just be imagining it...

I really, really hope Paz won't die. it would be just a really damn lazy plot development, especially since she's barely a developed character (and her relationship with Kat hasn't really been explored too well). recent developments made me regain my trust in Tom's chessboard setting, despite a glaring, never addressed Jones-shaped hole in the narrative and the comic's pacing since Anthony came back becoming really weird; I don't want to lose that.

Ah, time to check back in on gunnerkrigg court, the comic which for weeks had been a steady escalation of "oh no, shit just got realer"

I wonder if this is the result that Coyote desired, or even directly craved for. More to the point, I wonder if Coyote's earlier desperate attempts to give powers to Renard was to bring about a scenario such as the one seen in this page.
