Wait, so the skin in his paws and his chest...
I wonder who else is holding one of Coyote's powers.

Wait, so the skin in his paws and his chest...I wonder who else is holding one of Coyote's powers. Well Renard got the ability to possess creatures (the chest?), even if it was flawed, and Ysengrin already has Coyote's gardening powers (green fingers/paws?). Annie also has one of his teeth, although it grew back straight away. It wouldn't surprise me if all of Coyote's gifts come with some sort of intentional flaw or unforseen trick, like Renard's possession killing the host, or the knife being so sharp it can literally cut shadows from the floor.

That Coyote, he's a pretty swell guy. He'd give you the skin off his back if he thought you needed it.

Since Coyote is only missing skin from paws, chest and now his back, I'd bet he's only given out 3 powers. I think Philman is on to something, in that the skin location is connected to the power: gardening/forest power (green thumbs/paws), possession (stealing the heart [chest] of another's being), and strength (the spine/backbone of a creature). Since Sir Trickster still has a lot of epidermis left, he must have quite a few powers still in reserve. His powers are dazzling (his psychedelic coat) but ultimately superficial (skin-deep?), each containing a flaw. Beneath/without his powers (skin), Coyote is a rather withered, skeletal creature, perhaps like Ys outside of his tree-body.

I hate it when that happens. You're an ancient demon and you've just awoken in the morning, rubbing your eyes, thinking about a nice coffee, maybe a muffin, and suddenly RRRRRIP. Happens to the best of us.

As he's an immortal shapeshifting deity who can change his appearance on a whim, are you SURE you guys aren't looking too much into it? There's no way any changes to Coyote's body could be permanent unless he wished it.

This page shows us that Coyote's skin is brown underneath all the red and blue. Therefore, the patches of brown on his skin suddenly become more interesting than they were before. If Coyote simply transforms his skin back to red on Wednesday, we'll know we were reading too much into it. But personally I think it's a very interesting development.

Coyote does not exist, ergo Coyote can give up everything they are and still exist, because there was nothing to give away in the first place.

There's no way any changes to Coyote's body could be permanent unless he wished it. I think you are right: in principle, he could shape shift skin back in place. But Coyote is also a being of myth and symbol, and perhaps chooses to leave tokens of what powers he has removed, by leaving bare patches on himself. Though I'm speculating of course (and yep, may be reading too much into it).... we should ask Lord Coyote himself!

For real though, Annie could totally still deliver the spankies. It would probably hurt a great deal more and make him angrier, though?

To be fair, he did warn Annie that the knife was sharp enough to cut the Earth... And she and Kat did confirm it was Really Damn Sharp (tm). Brief theory on the actual powers he gives up, though, we could make an analogy to the body: on their own, our organs don't function properly to their full extent and capabilities, the interplay between each organ and other parts of the viscera, as well as how they individually and collectively talk to the central nervous system and how the CNS talks to them in return, come together to induce proper function among the parts of the body. Perhaps it is so with Coyote's powers? They need to be part of him, and if they are removed from him, they simply are unable to function properly. ... you know.... thinking back... Why did they even give Parley the sword to practice with? I mean... no harm if she cuts a wall, but who could she spar with? And the moment she gets a hit in, what would they think was gonna happen? But that's not a discussion for this page XD This page is Coyote's Body Tricks!

I think the original theory was that she could use it to cut and destroy Jeanne. (After all, using a REGULAR sword to defeat an unbeatable rage ghost is even more unlikely.) After they realized it was too dangerous for any one of them to wield, that plan was quickly scrapped and they found other methods.

The classical theory regarding the Coyote tooth, iirc, is that it's a take on the "omnipotent force vs. immovable object" paradox, in which the latter role is fulfilled by "Jones" (alias "Wandering Eye", alias "Old One", and possibly other names we have not seen yet) as the deity in association with the Court.

I don't think that the brown on his paws and chest are related to the powers he gave to Renard and Ysengrim. When we see him trying to convince Renard here, those patches are brown. I didn't look through the whole archive obviously, but I have only found a few instances where his paws aren't brown and those are extremely stylized frames.

Your link didn't link to what I think you meant... did you mean gunnerkrigg.com/?p=1214 ? You can't see Coyote's paws or chest there. What page are you referring to? Coyote morphs a lot when he is excited or trying to make a point.... his brown patches could be obscured then.

Coyote is missing colorful fur from limbs and chest even before he gives possession power to Rey. Good catch. There goes that theory!
