The lady doth protest too much.
It's hard to imagine Ysengrin as a lady, but that's the phrase that popped into my mind.
Also, I love the artsy pages! 😍

You know, this feels almost misleading.
I have a feeling he's not talking about Annie, but a certain red and blue dog on how he feels about them.

I'm entirely ready for the Ysengrin Coyote memory-wiping bad boss storyline to go nuclear. It would be a fabulous change of pace from introspection city.

Hm. My first thought as to the "them" was that he was saying he hates those who have hurt Annie.
It does seem as if this is being shown as if Coyote is holding the memory orb while we see a bit of what it shows, and I'm not sure my initial interpretation of the words fits with that, though.
I imagine this is going to be one of those chapters where it takes a while--maybe the whole chapter, at least a few pages-- to parse out what's going on.

I think they're Ys' fingertips since I don't think Coyote has the nail reinforcement doohicky but I am not 100% sure, particularly since Coyote's shape isn't fixed. Turns out he does. For comparison: Coyote and Ysengrin

Coyote does have similar fingers at times, but since that is in the ether and he appears to be messing around with his form, the ones in the first link appear closer to the current page. Gonna say on balance it's probably coyote.

I see what you mean about the Ch. 39 thumbnail but (and perhaps it's the fact that it's 3:29am here that's tripping me up) it looks like the extension from the nail across the back of the finger that appears on the first two instances in today's comic just isn't present on Coyote's fingers previously. It would certainly make more sense if these were Coyote's fingers, pawing through Ys' memories. Then again Coyote's hands sometimes light up when he does stuff and they're not doing that. I will keep looking at more examples. Hm. Based on the pages you linked, I'd say even moreso that those are Coyote's fingertips. [edit] It didn't occur to me at first but it makes sense that the fingers Ys gets from borrowing Coyote's power would look like Coyote's fingers. [/edit]

Comparing the fingertips from the two pages you linked to with today's, it just seems to me that they bare a much greater resemblance to Coyote's (the style of the lines, the color contrast with the nails) than they do to Ys'.

I'd say it's pretty certainly Coyote's. Not because of staring super-close at the profile of the claws or whatever, but because Ysengrin's hands (+ the rest of the tree body) is all made of the same wood material. That, and while his fingers do taper down to a point, there isn't any distinct curved claw part on his like those seen on this page and basically every other time Coyote's paws/hands have been shown. --- Also I'm wondering if the "them" Ysengrin is yelling about here is humans in general.

I think the "I HATE THEM!!" might mean Ysengrin's hatred for the humans of the Court.
Also, this just made my morning, seeing that Ysengrin is back in the story!! Dis gon be juicy. With plot. Not "plot".
Okay I'm done now...

I'm wondering if his normal calm demeanor isn't Y's "normal", but rather our "normal" for him. Without Coyote's brain-raping, Y could be far more well-rounded. He's certainly less coy in this page. Then again, as far as I know, the early Court could have cut up his pups to make the Seed Bismuth. Really looking forward to finding out some answers, and getting more questions.

Yeah, my guess is that 'them' is humans...but this hate is contradicted by his pleasant memories of Annie.

Could someone bother to say WHEN would that 2 first memories of Annie are from? I mean, seems like Y's saw Annie from that angle first on the "Tic Toc incident".

hmm, its like a stream of nice "Annie thoughts" flows through, partitioning/walling off the part of Y that hates-hates-hates on humans. Now that the Jeanne barrier is down, is Coyote planning to "weaponize" Y to use against the Court? And to do so he would have to damage/remove the nice "Annie thoughts".... This could get ugly.....

I also understood "them" as meaning humans in general. Also, it made me think of Tom's comment under the page where Ysengrin is formally introduced. Coyote: "This is Ysengrin. He is very impatient." Tom: "He also hates a lot of things."

someone, get this man a linkin park album Pfffffffft. Ysengrin has no tolerance for weakness. He only listens to the hardest shit when he must vent his violent hatred for humanity. (No disrespect intended toward Chester Bennington, R.I.P.) Also, uhhh, is it wrong that the first association I made was... this?

I think the only time Annie wore that outfit on the bridge was when she fell off. The first time she meets Ysengrin at the Forest border she's wearing her formal Court outfit. Was he watching her somehow? Maybe through hijacked Robot's eyes, but Robot wasn't that tall. The second one could be any of her visits to the Fores, before she spent a summer there, I'd say. Edit: Wait, that's not the bridge in the first one, is it? So that would be the first time we met Coyote and Ysengrin, in that formal meeting. The floor looks kind of similar?

The lady doth protest too much. "O, but she'll keep her word!" I'm wondering if his normal calm demeanor isn't Y's "normal", but rather our "normal" for him. Without Coyote's brain-raping, Y could be far more well-rounded. He's certainly less coy in this page. Then again, as far as I know, the early Court could have cut up his pups to make the Seed Bismuth. Really looking forward to finding out some answers, and getting more questions. Ysengrin doesn't see his anger as a well-rounded part of himself. Which in no way contradicts the possibility that his self-control has resulted in part from Coyote's memory-stealing. Ysengrin gives Coyote the credit for the positive changes he sees in himself: " I have more control than I ever had." Which is all fine... The problem with Coyote's methods, though, is that they don't actually solve the anger issue, they just keep it buried and forgotten--most of the time. Then it spills out and we have problems. Assuming the psychology of immortal wolf-creatures is anything like human psychology (admittedly, a dangerous assumption to make about non-humans), it seems that it would be better in the long term for Ysengrin to remember those occasions when his anger gets the best of him, so that he can try to understand what's going on and find ways of dealing with it.

A few thoughts . . .
1. Coyote's fingers are on Annie, moving forward in time from top to bottom. Is this a sign he has been manipulating things, or even her? Could there be memories Coyote has taken from Annie? I don't think it is likely, but possible.
2. Are we going to dig into Ysengrin's memories and find out why he hates humans? Is it tied to Annie, or more likely Surma?
3. Is this metaphorical for how Annie has been burying her own anger much the same way Coyote has taken Ysengrin's?
Honestly, no matter what is going on, this chapter has incredible promise to really blow things up. Can't wait.

"I - I want Ysengrin's memories back. He's my friend, and even if you don't think so, he..."
(handing over memories) "Is there anything else?"
"I - um... uh... No."
"Very well. Good night, fire head girl."
"Good night..."

Now that the Jeanne barrier is down, is Coyote planning to "weaponize" Y to use against the Court? Would Coyote really want to see the Court destroyed? He might be callous and untrustworthy, but I think he recognizes that if the Court's gone, he'll have a lot fewer toys to play with. (I suspect that's a major reason why he made that rift between the Court and the Wood - if they went to war with each other and destroyed each other - and I suspect that would be the most likely outcome - who'd he have to meddle with? I think he wants some measure of tension and distrust between the two communities, but just enough to ensure some entertaining frictions that won't end the "game".)

... in which Ysengrin has to confront and defeat some of his own inner demons. At least, that's my call at this point. Although I also like this idea: "I - I want Ysengrin's memories back. He's my friend, and even if you don't think so, he..." (handing over memories) "Is there anything else?" "I - um... uh... No." "Very well. Good night, fire head girl." "Good night..." If all the Court and Forest wanted was to be left alone on their respective sides of the ravine, this would probably be a fair guess at Coyote's goals.. But they don't, the Court has always wanted more than what they have, always pushing boundaries. I want to see how these next few chapters play out before hashing out another wildspec wall of text that's bubbling around in my head, but best guess is Coyote has learned of something happening within the court, most likely the Omega project, and has deemed it a threat. If he is going to use Ysengrin as a weapon, he'll want to either try to destroy it outright if he feels he can or else gain enough of a position/create enough of a threat to demand its permanent shutdown.

I don't think Coyote wants the court destroyed, but its mucking around with control of the ether is a direct threat to *him*, and he wouldn't let that stand unanswered for long. So maybe Y becomes a spear for a limited, targeted strike on the Omega device/research. And as a side benefit, even a limited war brings a new level of chaos and extra "fun" to the "game". Toys tossed about! Buildings toppled! Humans scattered! More Coyote grins!
