So will the coast be clear in general, or is that something our lovely Rey is supposed to make sure of? ALSO REY! REYNARDINE! WOLFPLUSH! REYYYY! that's all. P.S. How was there no thread yet?

What does Renard have to do at 3? Is it a Katurday birthday party?

Now, if only someone explained poor pooch-reynard how those pesky clock-faces works... Renard can ask Clanger Bing and Joey Tribbianoid to tell him when it is time to go. Surely they wouldn't make an innocent mistake that leads to hijinks! EDIT: Never mind. Renard can't forget because Kat currently owns him and ordered him, twice, to not forget. It may not occur to Kat that she gave him an order, but she did. Compared to Annie, I thought Kat was more aware of the burden of ownership and would be more careful about how she says things to Renard. But she is still just 15-ish years old. Annie's birthday is my guess. My first guess was Tony working with Kat at her lab, but a surprise party would be nice.

My first guess was Tony working with Kat at her lab, This makes sense, 3pm he's out and Annie can come on over. Awkwardness avoided.

I suddenly realized that I miss Renard. We haven't seen him since, like, chapter 57... It was 1.5 years ago.
TOM more RENARD PLS

Annie's birthday is my guess. Twas foretold! MEANWHILE IN AN ALTERNATE UNIVERSE Cool thing I noticed on reread: Tony is proposing that they bring in a live giraffe for Annie's birthday. Go big or go home, yeah?

Hmm, this page makes me curious if Reynard has Potterverse-elf-style powers. More specifically, if Kat tells Rey not to forget something, is he suddenly able to remember something that he wouldn't otherwise be able to remember? Is there anything else that he couldn't do before that he would be capable of doing if Kat explicitly told him to?

I wonder whether the "coast is clear" part means "when it'll be safe for Reynardine to move about". Ever since Antony's return, he's been supposedly under new arrest, as a result of Antony ordering Annie to turn Rey over to him. He did return Rey a few chapters later (presumably thanks to that visit from Coyote in the previous chapter; Antony must have suspected from it that the Court had been using him - making him their "front guy" in grounding Annie, so that everyone who was unhappy about it would be angry at him rather than at the Court - and giving Rey back was probably his way of defying them), but it must seem still not quite safe to have him roaming about the Court freely any more (particularly since they'd need to keep secret for as long as possible that Kat's the one who owns him now).
This might be why we haven't seen anything of him for a while, including why he didn't take part in the Jeanne rescue; Kat needed to keep Reynardine hidden as much as possible, so that Court observers won't start to become suspicious.

By my reading, when Tony asked Annie to give Rey over, that didn't seem to be part of the Court's plan - a plan which seemed to be solely focused on reining in Annie's contact with the Gillitie folk. The implication is that Tony had his own reasons for wanting to talk to Rey (in the one place he was certain that the Court's surveillance capabilities couldn't breach) - which is arguably bolstered by the fact that once it was clear to Tony that he was unable to get Rey to talk, Tony returned Rey to Annie at the first time of asking.

Weeeeelllll, the thing is, the whole mission down in the ravine had to be hidden from the Court's eyes, so there was no point in excluding a powerful ally like Renard. I still want to know why they did it. Oh, that again. Since Kat and Tony have become co-workers, I assume the potential for this permission to become disastrous is at its lowest since it was given.

I still want to know why they did it. Maybe concern that one member of the group had to stay home, in case everyone in the expedition got killed, as a precaution? And, yes, we really could use an explanation for that one. Maybe we'll get one in this chapter.

Everyone there had a very specific part in the plan (except Red because she's a stubborn jerk): Ayilu and Parley keep Jeanne distracted in an illusion, Robot and Parley engage in swordplay as a last resort, Kat uses her Diego-inspired gadgets to find the arrow and contain it after Annie pulls it up from the riverbed. Rey has plenty of good qualities, like his wolf or plushie forms and his centuries of experience with people and magic, but I don't think he would be all that useful in this kind of plan. They didn't bring Shadow 2 either, or any of their friends from Queslett Year 10, and nobody's questioning that.

That's what he wants you to believe! (but seriously, it is a bit of a big gun to hang on the wall, just for decoration. And Rey might not know Kat and Tony are a team now.)

Their friends from Queslett Year 10 don't know about Jeanne; Rey was in on the research, and he is powerful Etheric being. He could at least have acted as Consultant. Surely they would have found a role for him during the Mission as well, at least as backup. Mostly I cannot imagine Rey to willingly let Annie go into such danger without insisting on accompanying her. Concerning other students, actually I think Jack would have made a fine addition to their adventuring party, given his various skills and knowledge in technology, Ether, gathering information, and generally not getting caught.

I really think, based on what Janet said to Kat, that they were not expected to be caught, this meaning they were out in secret of everyone else, including Rey, that, command or not, would not knowingly let Annie in such a risk.

Huh, that is not how I had interpreted that scene, but now that you say it it does make sense. I had thought that Annie meant something like "search your feelings, you know it to be true." Then, when Reynard realized she was telling the truth (or at least suspected it), he wasn't able to yell "noooo! That's impossible!" because he knew it would be a lie.

A being cannot be required to tell the truth about something, if it does not know the truth and has no way of determining the truth on demand.
However, a being can possibly be required to tell what it thinks is the truth - as opposed to saying something it believes to be false.
(Of course, there's also the option of telling the truth in such an unconvincing manner that nobody believes you. Unfortunately, this won't work on people who know you can't lie. Telling only carefully-selected parts of the truth might still work though.)
(Seriously. In a story currently in development that I'm aware of, a young-looking woman is asked how she gets her hair such a magnificent bright blue - and no that is not a normal hair color for humans in that world. Her response is "Would you believe that's its natural color?". The truth is: her hair is naturally bright blue; also, although most people can't tell, she isn't precisely human.)
