Look closer on the previous page. The slugs are there. Oh wow, you're right. I thought they just materialised but they climbed all the way up the branch.

Not sure if the red one got catapulted or if they both fell (more or less) straight down.

In case anyone hasn't seen it: a video of what Surma and Anthony just witnessed: youtu.be/wG9qpZ89qzc(Watch it, it's extremely good) Slug mating is entirely too **there** to be appropriate viewing with a man who isn't one's boyfriend. Poor Jimmy-Jims.

Sooo, is the court testing someone's ability to look into the future? Do they have a ..'certain device', that can predict very specific stuff?* Do they just want to show Tony and Surma some slugs going at it? Only time will tell.. *this could actually tie in with the data stuff snuffle mentioned

In Gunnerkrigg Court, it is the slug effect instead of the butterfly effect.

I am super jealous that someone mentioned 70s porn music before I got the chance. :/
Is the one purple slug...sort of colored like Surma? Or am I reading too much into this??

faiiry , No I think you're right. The colors o both slugs match Tony and Surma, it's unlikely that's an accident.

In Gunnerkrigg Court, it is the slug effect instead of the butterfly effect. Up to this point, I assumed the test was trying to generate a gravitational singularity (i.e. beginnings of a black hole/implosion superweapon) but it could actually be that it's trying to effect a more subtle change in reality... Namely, making Surma fall in love. I guess I need to go out and buy some tinfoil now.

Not sure if the red one got catapulted or if they both fell straight down. Red Slug: "I'll call yoooo oooo........" The only thing that can be taken away from this is that, Headmaster Llanwellyn is a complete perv.

How romantic! Jimmy Jims had no chance. Let's not forget that Jimmy Jims' favorite activity is standing by a high cliff overlooking the sea on a beautiful blue skied day with his lady friend and watching mystical creatures fly through the air. Meanwhile Tony's favorite activity is watching bugs in the woods. Eggers has the market cornered on romance.

Just realized something. The whole plot to Gunnerkrigg Court isn't so much "what if Harry Potter was a girl" as it is "what if Harry Potter was a girl AND her dad was actually Snape."

This is actually how my girlfriend fell for me, only we used frogs. Tony's close but it's still an amateur mistake.

By The Way: I am figuring that the chapter will end with a forest spirit entering or exiting the designated spot the day after the kids go home to file their report on mating slugs.

My, my, Im through my 2nd reading on Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality (a must read for everyone on science, or HP, or fiction), that basically is "What if HP was a Scientist AND his parents were not awful", and this comment rings a bell.

Also: I know Tom said this was actually how it happened and not just how Anja is narrating it, but gosh darn if it doesn't seem like a narrative someone is trying to cover up adult sexy-times by talking about slug intercourse instead
(It's a bizarre strategy, now I think on it).

The phenomenon that Anthony and Surma were sent to observe being slugs mating does make some sense. It would be studying (through observation) the biological habits of a rare species of animal - certainly an appropriate activity for a scientific organization, which would be thus dedicated to learning and acquiring information.
I think most of us have felt tempted (I know I have), when we witness the Court's schemings, to see it in the light of, say, the Inner Party in "1984" or N.I.C.E. in "That Hideous Strength" - just a set of corrupt and deceitful powermongers. (And probably thanks to Coyote's statement that the Court is "man's attempt to become God" - which, remember, comes from a character with his own agenda and wish to influence Annie; there might be some truth in it, but a slanted truth.) But the Court's foremost interest, from what we've seen so far, is science - the pursuit of knowledge. (Without trying to defend the Court's actions - I don't think they *can* be defended - these seem to generally stem from fear of the neighbors in Gilltie Wood; presumably, without those tensions, the Court leadership would have never set out to murder Jeanne or deceive Renard.) Thus, finding out more about, say, the life cycles of slugs in the Amazon rain forest, even if it wasn't something it could weaponize, would make sense to the Court.
(And indeed, if the Court *was* just another set of conspirators on the level of N.I.C.E., I doubt that its scientific achievements would be as advanced.)

By The Way: I am figuring that the chapter will end with a forest spirit entering or exiting the designated spot the day after the kids go home to file their report on mating slugs. Yeah, Tony is really jumping to conclusions here: the first sign of "something happening" in the area of study, and he says, "I bet that's it!" (But for some reason the branch falling didn't excite him as much.) I wonder how close we are to the end of the two-week time frame. Which, come to think of it, seems really odd: the Court gives Tony a super-accurate set of coordinates, but a time frame of "a couple of weeks." I guess it's possible that they could accurately know the position but not the time of some event (uncertainty principle something something). I'm not accusing them (yet) of sending Tony on a total wild goose slug chase--"Hey, let's give him a 'top secret' assignment to stare at a tree in Brazil for two weeks! [troll face]" But in short-- jda mentioned Methods of Rationality--"I notice that I am confused."
