She is clearly infected with the mind controlling parasites, she is obsessed now with their survival. Soon he will be infected as well. Then the parasites will "make them fall in love" in order to have more genetic diversity of parasites nearby to mate with.
Gunnerkrigg court knew about these evil parasites and sent innocent humans to get infected and bring back them so they could be weaponised and used against the forest.

I bet he didn't even see it, and it's just an ethereal thing.... or that's not Tony at all, I mean, look at that smile!

Tony seems to feel affection towards Surma due to her freaking out. Gonna be honest, I absolutely hate bugs, and yet if Surma was hysterical like that around me, I'd be kind of annoyed at this point, not affectionate.
What can she "not even imagine"? Has she never seen a bug before?? That raises the important question of whether they actually have bugs in GKC or not. It's such an artificial environment, maybe they just simply don't.

I find I'm strangely annoyed with this strip. I'm not sure why. Maybe it's because there are no bugs drawn, so it's hard to buy her freak out?

I think Surma's dislike for bugs has turned into amazement (at least in this case) and Tony is viewing her in a whole new light. GKC has lots of spiders and spiders have to eat.

Ah yes, there was at least one insect, no, two! That, and she visited the forest, though bugs in the amazon may be a little a lot different.

The two of them are so cute together. I love Tony's affectionate smile for Surma's freakout.
Also, bugs ARE freaky. You might not buy it, but let me tell you two stories that happened to me.
When I was a kid, I was afraid of the giant grasshoppers we had at the seaside, because they would get into my clothes, jump into my hair and tangle themselves in. My dad decided to do something about it. He caught two of them, put them in a jar, we put some leaves in and made holes in the lid. For the first time, I was starting to like my new pets. They didn't seem so bad anymore. In the morning, I sprung out of bed to check out on them. The brown one had eaten half the green one. I screamed and called for dad and never saw the jar again.
Later on when I grew up, I woke up one morning to the sensation of having water in my ear, like when you dive in the sea. Gradually I became aware that this sensation was moving with more... intent. Then I realized it was burrowing. There was a bug burrowing inside my ear. I screamed and went to the ER. The doctor tried to see inside my ear with a light but couldn't find anything. Skeptical, he still irrigated it with saline. The bug fell out and he exclaimed, "Wow, that's a big one." WELP.
So yeah. Bugs. Freakouts. >.<

I think one page of freak out was enough. I actually found myself why Tony would be endeared to that. Though I think it has more to do with the "babies" part rather than the bugs themselves.

Though I think it has more to do with the "babies" part rather than the bugs themselves. I partly agree with you. On one hand, two pages of freakout seems much. On the other hand, it's not just freakout anymore. It's a memory of Tony and Surma's first affection. It's a memory of Tony looking at Surma the way he looks at her there, a memory of Surma touching him. The bugs are no longer in the picture because it's no longer about them. It's about Tony and Surma. So the memory is prolonged to illustrate how they are starting to feel for each other, the change between them.

Gosh, I think Surma's really much more three-dimensional now than she was before we saw this chapter. She hates bugs, but can immediately empathize with the idea of a momma bug literally carrying dozens of babies, an image which made me think 'ICK' (and I consider myself to have pretty intense mothering tendencies) made her feel protective. That's really a surprise! At first I thought she was freaking out about how gross it was. But now it's clear she is worried for them.
She's a spaz and isn't the brightest all the time, but she is earnest, is willing to work hard, and willing to commit to difficult things. What's not to like? Surma already seems so much more realistic to me than the other characters in Gunnerkrigg, and this despite the fact that I like all the other characters in Gunnerkrigg. She seems much more possible somehow.

One might think she's freaked not by the bugs, but by the prospect of Ketrak showing up for a long and nice talk. One might think.

It's not the bug she's freaking out about, it's what happened with it. A mother so full of babies and witnessing the birth of so many and their immediate spreading out and exploring the world. She can't imagine being in that position. Being that mother.
