"More interesting" I hope that's an understatement.

A couple of jabronis alone in the woods with no one else around for months and months. How could they not have fallen in love? They needed to do SOMETHING to pass the time.

Oddly, Tony isn't actually taking notes, but working on his Buffy/Angel fan-fiction.

Any bets on whether the branch breaking was due to something etheric happening that we can't see yet?

Ooh, I always had this silly theory about the Omega device: Court = Man's endeavour to become God God = "I am the Alpha and the Omega" Omega = the End = Death Omega device = some kind of Death Ray This page made me think of that again, but I guess it's more likely the dead branch is just a byproduct of whatever the Court is doing, not the actual end result.

Surma: Not That Into Science
|

I see three scenarios, in order of rough thematic probability: something big, something boring and something mild (thought probably more than this page).
Something big: An event worthy of spending money to visit the Middle Of Nowhere, Brazil. Nobody throws money at cheap, expendable student scientists that they can't afford to lose but they also don't sink cash into pointless ventures. Even if Surma might be able to 'see' something that Tony and Donald can't, there's no way they'd give those two a mission (the mission parameters haven't changed for Surma's attendance, if they are even aware of her leaving) they can't carry out, repeatedly, for months on end. Since neither can experience the ether, an ethereal event would have to be either unexpected, or large enough to be seen in 'reality' - as those two could then perceive it. 'More interesting' could be an understatement, which is something he has a history of tending towards in casual discussion.
Something boring: We've already seen more or less what happens. A big nothing. This is what science involves a lot of the time, though it is also something we may avoid since experiment without a tangible result tend to get their funding pulled... but I digress. Despite the disappointment, null results can be very useful for informing future research and eliminate rival hypotheses to a question. For example, the lack of evidence found by research into Lamarck's 'theories' (I'd argue there wasn't a theory as we define it today) on trait inheritance. The null hypothesis can be a powerful tool even if accepted. As I mentioned before, Tony says he's been sent on missions with 'more interesting' events, so presumably, there's been times with bigger results - but maybe not all the time. Sometimes people make mistakes like looking in the wrong place.
Option 3 might also be the case; there's a something more substantial, along the lines of what Tony might expect form past trips, but not a huge incident that could be recorded from a greater distance. Realistically, that would be what I'd consider the likely outcome, but this is a webcomic; going hard or going home tends to be the typical routes. GKC isn't that fond of sticking to tradition at times, though so not fussed either way.
But yeah; if there's something ethereal going on, I think that's plausible - provided there is something there that people like Tony can actually observe. otherwise the Court is knowingly (or unknowingly, if the Court really is as wasteful and bureaucratic as some may have alluded already) throwing money away... until Annie shows up. Who knows, really. This chapter is supposed to be the start of the two getting to know each other, it doesn't have focus entirely on Surma's powers and their advantages/limits.

Whereas I think the branch was a red herring -- the actual breaking took place well above the area of interest, so having the branch then fall into the area was just coincidence.

Ooh, I always had this silly theory about the Omega device: Court = Man's endeavour to become God God = "I am the Alpha and the Omega" Omega = the End = Death Omega device = some kind of Death Ray Too super-villainy for the Court, I'd say. Though it's done a number of bad things over the centuries, those were generally motivated by fear for its survival rather than as an end.

Or in this case: Sometimes things break, and fall.
