Four hours well spent. This was basically called in the last page's thread: Actually, the Court (and Tony) might expect nothing to happen. Part of science is doing boring stuff, to prove yourself wrong about things, even when you're not. That would explain his willingness to cancel. Being right in science is always boring. When you're wrong is when the fun happens. They could literally be there to watch that spot, and expect nothing... but if there is something, and the Court was wrong, then it's showtime. Good job, ctso74.

That's right, Surma! You payed for the whole seat, but you'll only need the EDGE!!!!Four hours well spent. This was basically called in the last page's thread: Actually, the Court (and Tony) might expect nothing to happen. Good job, ctso74. I suppose, after years of wild speculation, I had to be right at least once... So many years... I'm not crying. You're crying.

Tony in the last panel reminds me of how Tom draws himself. It's really just the combination of the simple expression and reading Tom's autobiographical strips, but it's cute to me.

The bug Surma swatted away was bringing the invitation.

Can I just say, Surma's facial expressions are everything. It's such a relief that she changes expressions so much after thousands of pages of mostly or or > Annie-faces and the occasional > and and :#o and from Kat. She does 'bored', 'grossed out', 'amused', 'curious', 'scandalized', 'roll-eyes', the whole human gamut. It's also fun that Tony's been mostly since they got to Brazil.

A second thought: Surma has every reason to think this is the Worst Trip Ever. Little sleep, lots of sweaty walking, bugs everywhere, bitter drinks, and boring hours of staring at a tree. Seems like everything anti-Surma. I wonder what ends up converting her. Maybe just that Tony's suddenly hotttt lens-flare man.

Prediction: Tony asks Surma to watch the spot in the Ether during one of their observations, and she sees activity he can't observe.
And so Tony becomes intrigued and interested in explaining all things Etheric through SCIENCE! and thus begins his downfall into thinking he can put an end to the cycle of the Fire Elementals (almost said Fireborn there, but then I remembered that's a thing from *my* stories, not from anything good like GC :v ).

No you fools! that bug that crawled on Surma was the observable activity!

That bug is certainly not suspicious or potentially evil or anything, not at all.

Prediction: they take another look at the spot and find it's turned into IBOGA ROOTBARK - Healing Plant

Never mind the busy portal next to it, this space had nothing. All that way, to observe no activity in a cubic foot of air.
Remember, this was *before* Pokemon Go.

Does it make me a dreadful party pooper if I point out that she's flicked the bug away without harming or killing it? (Possibly because she doesn't want Ketrak to show up and be "gooseberry" right now...)

However realistic it might be to have this be an observation where nothing happens, from a storytelling perspective, something will have to happen eventually (maybe during the observation session the following day, or the day after that), to justify its inclusion in the chapter. (I know that the real story here is supposed to be about Tony and Surma falling in love, and the studies are secondary - but even so, Tom could have just as easily made this a straightforward entomology expedition without the extra mission from the Court, if nothing was supposed to come from the latter).

...Tom could have just as easily made this a straightforward entomology expedition without the extra mission from the Court, if nothing was supposed to come from the latter... Maybe, but my feeling is that the crux of the chapter so far lies in Tony's respecting and honouring Surma's request to be an active participant without any hesitation.
