The secret ingredient is bugs.
also didn't realize how much watching a person under 18 drink coffee would trigger my puritan american values. Hopefully its tea. Bug Tea.

I like Tony's just ever so slightly smug-but-in-a-friendly-way expression.

I need me a cup of that...
Glad Surma's come around on this bug adventure. These two really are cute together.

I forget what the line over the two dots means? That's the sign of the shadow men. The secret ingredient is bugs. also didn't realize how much watching a person under 18 drink coffee would trigger my puritan american values. Hopefully its tea. Bug Tea. Wait, how do we know how old Surma and Tony are in this flashback? We don't. Frankly I think they're adults at that point. Surma is a medium, Tony is a shadow man and doing research. They're young adults, but adults. That said, as a French person I'm slightly bewildered that a 17 years old drinking a cup of coffee would trigger anybody's values ^^

I came here to say this! I had to check if it'd been there all this time, and I hadn't noticed - but no! It's just now appeared. New shirt! Exciiiiiting. I also think they're young adults, maybe early 20s or so, but who knows.

Oh, if only coffee(?) did that to me. Caffiene never helps me wake up, it only prevents me from sleeping at night. Maybe Tony's "special brew" is different.

Oh, Annie...
Tony didn't brainwash your mother. It was much worse than that...
He made her coffee.

when I was in high school a lot of my classmates were already drinking coffee. It was getting pretty common to see zombie teens walking around with a Dunkin Donuts cup glued to their hand. I always thought it was weird (never got into coffee myself--love the smell but not the taste). Then I started hearing some parents say their elementary schooler loves coffee.
Ah Tony's special brew. It'll put hair on your teeth!

Not a fan of coffee myself (it just tastes nasty), but don't see the big deal with a 17 year old drinking it.

These two are having an adventure. Tony is sharing a world he knows and is comfortable in. There are few things as delightful as sharing a passion and a place of wonder with someone. What ever brew (coffee, tea or infusion of local herbs) Tony gave to Surma, it got her up and going. Hair on you teeth and teeth in your hair.

Someone says 'don't take it easy on me'. Tony doesn't take it easy on them, respecting their expressed wish instead of being 'kind' to them and pandering to their weaknesses. I have newfound respect for Tony. (If only he was better with Annie )

To those wondering about 'special brew' contents; Brazil is the world-leader in yerba mate production, the original home of guarana and guayusa. It even has its own tobacco species.
Also... ayahuasca.

This makes me wonder, what if Tony and Jimmy Jims had a chance to also bond? Clearly the only thing necessary is for him to be alone with someone else (Donny in the dorms, Surma now in the work trip), and Tony doesnt seem so far like he wouldnt be able to handle Eglamores physical activity regime due to his work (ok he doesnt fight ether powered beings, but still hes doing reasonably well in the jungle and managed to do a wilderness world trip on his own to see Surma again). Chances are that over the years they couldve easily done some outdoors activity together. Hell, even solve the residential mystery after being the only ones left. My point is that its weird that considering they seem kind of similar with the new evidence its weird they hadnt had that much time to be just by themselves (And yes this also applies to Tony/Brinnie being a thing if the group hadnt been together as the group the whole time)

Jimmy Jims could learn a thing or two from these guys.

So, the volunteers at the con I work every summer had (and have, but in a new formula) a drink they called "Damn!"* They've since reworked it, but the original formula had so much caffeine in it that drinking more than what would fit in one of those little foam coffee cups would put you over the daily max dose advocated by the FDA (400 mg). It reputedly would string you out for something like 16 hours. Tasted pretty good, apparently. Like the richest chocolate milk you could imagine mixed with espresso. I wouldn't know. I've avoided it :V
*Why "Damn!"? Because when people would taste it for the first time, they would universally take a sip, and then look at the cup with surprise and go "Damn!"

I forget what the line over the two dots means? My guess was that it's the logo of the Gunnerkrigg Court skateboarding team. also didn't realize how much watching a person under 18 drink coffee would trigger my puritan american values. Hopefully its tea. Bug Tea. I don't know why it would be an issue, or how you know it's coffee, or how you know they are under 18. Whatever it is, it's one heck of an energy drink - it even gave her a completely different hairdo.
