Hurry up and get dressed!
The first time he's seen her without makeup, possibly? Maybe but maybe not, they did go to school and have athletic stuff in proximity to each other...

Tony seems awfully chatty for someone who is supposed to be closed off and untalkative.

Surma also seems much less enigmatic and more... Flighty/scatty... Than I remember!

Who is this guy, and what has he done with Annie's Dad?? (or should that be the other way round?)
Timing wise, I'd say this is well after "Ties", a little bit after the coda in "S1" (time for Surma's hair to grow out), but before Rey made his fateful move.
Interesting that Surma's being cartoonified more than Tony here.

So all of the sudden Tony is capable of expressing emotion? of lifting a single eyebrow? Well color me impressed.

A whole page without a sexifying lens flare?! Who needs lens flare with those biceps?

Interesting that Surma's being cartoonified more than Tony here. Tony is in his element doing what he loves. Of course he's going to be more out going. Surma is out of her element. If Tony shows her a whole new world and is cool doing it I can see Surma being impressed.

So the answer to Tony dating Brinnie was leaving them all alone for 7 months in rainforest heaven. Should have been way easier to figure out before.

If Tony shows her a whole new world and is cool doing it Oooh, does he have a magic carpet up his sleeve on the next page?

What are they talking about? Oh right, romance, relationships, psychology. But what about the important question for us tech nerds: What is this gadget he is carrying in panel 4?

Confirmed: Surma is nowhere near as cool and calculating as I thought she was. I don't think this woman could trick a paper bag into marrying her. Also, I just dunno about this chapter overall. Maybe it'll get better, but at the moment, guys, I'm gonna be totally honest, I'm bored out of my mind.

But she still might be calculating; here she's still pretty young and the circumstances could have tossed her off her game. She's pretty quick to respond when Anthony says something that might be taken as condescending, or implying lack of competence, or that she's in general not pulling her weight (re: "Hey, don't think I'm not up for this! I know it's not a holiday so don't go easy on me!") Back in the Wood or the Court she'd be on familiar ground. This bug-hunt is Tony's territory.

New theory for why Surma chose Anthony over James: Maybe James likes to treat her more like a girlfriend while Tony treats her like a person... If you know what I mean... Not that James is condescending or anything, just sort of over-protective. While Surma and Tony, over time, become "partners in crime" so to speak. Same wavelength an so on. (But this leans toward wildspec since we have not seen Surma interact with Jimmy Jims, yet)

Who needs lens flare with those biceps? I doubt Surma is particularly impressed, comparing to James. Those elves are fit (if lean), too. What are they talking about? Oh right, romance, relationships, psychology. But what about the important question for us tech nerds: What is this gadget for he is carrying in panel 4? A light trap, for flying insects. Lamp on top, light filter (optional), funnel, collection/killing jar.

It reminded me of an insect trap, but I only know those who zap, burn and kill the insects that and on them, which wouldn't leave anything scientifically usable for Tony, so I had to ask.

The only support for it I can think of was her deception of Renard, and that was on the Court's instructions, as a mission, rather than of her own volition (and she's shown no signs of doing other such things on her own elsewhere in the comic).

A light trap, for flying insects. Lamp on top, light filter (optional), funnel, collection/killing jar. That may be a hybrid. The body looks like a chemical or CO 2 trap.

With all due respect to faiiry, this is the best chapter since the Jeanne arc ended. I am thoroughly enjoying this. So much. It's quirky, delicious romcom territory, with a delectable background of intrigue and dark foreshadowing. Maybe the fact that you're bored by it really highlights Tom's storytelling manipulation mastery. Three weeks ago half the forums were convinced Tony was permanently the worst creature on the planet; now I think the seed of doubt has been planted, and it's only been 10 pages! I love Surma's frizz, Tony's charm, the fact that this chapter is basically defying all the carefully-machinated expectations Tom had set us up with about Tony, and the questions about Surma and Eglamore's relationship, and around Surma's mothering choices. I've been looking forward to this 'who is Tony really' thing since Microsat 5 and then again since Annie and the Fire (after the trauma that was The Tree). That's like... 27 chapters worth of waiting.

She is so far out of familiar territory, since getting on the plane, that at this point I don't think she could trick a paper bag into holding her lunch.

Except for Ties, literally every time we've seen her, she's been cool, collected, articulate and intelligent. And even in Ties, she seemed far smarter than she does in the current chapter. In this chapter she seems like she doesn't know what the hell she's doing whatsoever, and she's lost at every turn.

Except for Ties, literally every time we've seen her, she's been cool, collected, articulate and intelligent. Not quite. At the flashback at the very end of "S1" we see Surma and Anja talking, and as fia points out, Surma tells Anya : "I'm two short planks compared to you," As both fia and yourself point out, when we see Surma in later flashbacks it's apparent that she is in fact very capable. But here's what I reckon seems interesting. Surma's words imply a lack of confidence in herself, and crucially, the "S1" flashback would appear to be shortly before the events of this chapter. I'm grateful that you brought up "Ties", as I hadn't read it in some time and just refreshed my memory. I think what that chapter shows now that we have more of the picture is incredibly telling. Surma and Jimmy are both somewhat hot-headed (literally, in Surma's case) and impulsive, and the relationship that develops between them as they grow up is very like a lot of young romances in that similarity is what tends to develop into attraction. I think fish has hit on something quite important in that Jimmy is chivalrous and protective almost to a fault, and this might have left Surma "coasting" a bit in the years they've been together. She has her role as forest liason, and she's competent at it if we take her at her word - but it doesn't seem like she's ever tried to (or had to) push or challenge herself up until now. The combination of her kindness and loyalty plus that bloody-minded impulsiveness have put her halfway round the world, surrounded by insects (which freak her out), with someone she only really knows in passing. In this comic, it's clear Tony is more than willing to carry out most - if not all - of the work himself, as he seems to have spotted Surma's discomfort (so much for the "Tony is emotionally stunted" theory ). But for whatever reason something seems to have flipped a switch in Surma and she wants in. She's still dreaming of Jimmy on the previous page, but I have a feeling as this trip continues Surma is going to realise that this time with Tony represents an opportunity for her to face down her fears and lack of confidence - and begin to grow as a person in a way that she hasn't experienced before. Random question - was it Eglamore who put about the idea that Tony always had a "thing" for Surma (and theorised that was why he turned Brinnie down)? Whoever it was, the last few pages indicate that this probably wasn't the case...
