I love how scandalized Anja looks. "A month long trip! Alone! In the jungle! With TONY!" As if Surma had just agreed to throw a litter of puppies off a bridge. It's increasingly clear that no one but Donny likes Tony. Anja finds the concept of spending time alone with him to be utterly unthinkable to the point of madness.
Also, I called it about our boy Eggers being absent on training.
Edit: I just noticed...Surma is wearing sandals..with jeans. I don't know if I can ever forgive this.

Jeans and sandals: when it's too hot for socks, but you don't want to wear shorts. The perfect combo for casual summer wear - especially on the cooler days (or for the ladies who don't want to bother shaving). Great fashion choice Surma.

Can't believe Tom would so casually let slip a spoiler like that for his bottom-of-page comment. I'm shook. (Probably totally unoriginal joke)

Hmm, wonder if they meet another jungle god while they are out there, or if Coyote is god of ALL the jungles and forests.

What with the lore about how Coyote used to be North American before he packed up and moved to England, I'm pretty sure he can only be in one country at a time, and other gods rule the forests of the rest of the world.

The Amazon might have a cool Jaguar goddess.... I like that idea. The pre-Columbian Mayans had plenty of fascinating jaguar gods, but that would be more Mexico than Brazil. I don't know if Tom will throw in Etheric being in this adventure, but it would be interesting to see some "outside Court" paranormal stuff.

Still, there are jaguars in the Amazon as well, and they are such impressive creatures there must have been gods based on them there too, I figure....

It's increasingly clear that no one but Donny likes Tony. Anja finds the concept of spending time alone with him to be utterly unthinkable to the point of madness. I don't see why that would have to be the case. If Anja is close to Donald and Donald is close to Anthony, it's far from impossible that she would be aware of any redeeming features and still assume others would find him hard to deal with and especially that someone like Surma might be a terrible fit in the short term. As far as I know, the general bullying of Anthony in the forums has yet to be reflected in the comic.

No, let's talk about dating the episode using the plane model instead.
Also, sixth panel: Surma looking the most like Antimony ever?

You know, that we won't get full story from Brazil? At least for now. This is Anja's story. She doesn't know exactly what happened. She might say how they were behaving after return or maybe some short recap of what happened in Brazil, but not whole story.

Anja finds the concept of spending time alone with him to be utterly unthinkable to the point of madness. Well. Y'know. She's not wrong! You know, that we won't get full story from Brazil? At least for now. This is Anja's story. She doesn't know exactly what happened. She might say how they were behaving after return or maybe some short recap of what happened in Brazil, but not whole story. " . . . and when they came back, they were in love and engaged to be married! I'm not sure how it happened because they never actually told me. The end!"

Anja knows that, so she should be aware that more people than Donny want(ed) to spend time alone with Tony. I'm pretty sure she is not shocked by the idea of somebody wanting to spend time with Tony, but by that someone being Surma.

The real mystery is how she went from panel 3 to panel 4.
Current headcanon; casual backwards somersault.

She might say how they were behaving after return or maybe some short recap of what happened in Brazil, but not whole story. "Gunnerkrigg Court" was (at least, in the first few chapters) presented as being narrated by Annie, and yet there've been several scenes that she wasn't present at or couldn't have known about. Maybe Tom will do the same thing here in this flashback (and we haven't had any "Anja narrating" captions in this chapter so far, so we don't know for certain that this is Anja telling the story to Annie and Kat; it could be an omniscient narrator providing a flashback).

She might say how they were behaving after return or maybe some short recap of what happened in Brazil, but not whole story. In addition to todd's point above, it's quite likely that Surma told her best friend Anja all about the trip the moment she got back. Also, the insect-on-a-leaf title page, and the fact that the chapter image's airplane isn't the airplane picture from this page, both imply that we'll get to see more of this trip.

No, let's talk about dating the episode using the plane model instead. It's almost certainly a BEECH King Air F90, which was in production from 1979 to 1983. But it could also be an F90-1, which ran from 1983 to 1985. Regardless, this is no earlier than 1979.

I just noticed...Surma is wearing sandals..with jeans. I don't know if I can ever forgive this. It was a 70s thing. Bell bottoms, go figure. You know, that we won't get full story from Brazil? Are you suggesting that as this story unfolds, it will slowly evolve into 3rd person and eventually forget there was a storyteller to begin with as this trip to Brazil takes over and becomes the comic?

We haven't even had any voice-over narration in this chapter. We're assuming that it's Anja's story, but it could just as easily be a regular flashback like "Ties".

Remember this flashback at the beginning of "Fire Spike". Anja was not present back then, but two pages later it is shown that she was telling Annie in the present how Renard was tricked.

I get the impression that relations between them did not stay very warm be after his not-so-subtle rejection. Still agree with you about the reason behind Anja's shock, though.
