Are you guys going to let Surma and Tony just fall in love like this? Are you serious?? Right in front of my salad?
Memes aside, I have a hard time imagining the two of them becoming smitten for one another over the course of a single trip.

Surma, Tony said it was to be a two-MAN expedition. Your solution is unacceptable. UNACCEPTABLE!

Possible retorts by Tony:
"Excuse me, Surma. It seems you didn't pay attention properly. I will say it again, only once. It was meant to be a two MAN expedition."
"Ah well. You must realise that the expedition takes place in a very warm part of the world, forcing us to wear little clothing, and the tent in which we'll sleep is very small indeed."
Also, did Surma always say "ya"?

Is it just me, or does young Tony have something against contractions?

Plot twist: Anja is just pretending in order to give Donnie a way to get out of his promise to be part of the expedition (which he secretly considers a waste of time and an abomination to science). Time to reveal your bluff, Donnie!

Clearly not a fan of public outpourings of grief.

Also, did Surma always say "ya"? Young Surma has consistently had a pretty casual/slangy accent. Mom-Surma spoke more formally and without the 'ya' to Annie, at least in Annie's recollection.

Memes aside, I have a hard time imagining the two of them becoming smitten for one another over the course of a single trip. Well, look how well Tony and Kat started getting on after just a brief while together in a lab, and that's when Kat hated him, first. I'm guessing that he's a lot more approachable in one-on-one situations, at least when there's work that can break the ice, but locks up in any bigger group.

As Annie suspects, he gets out his syringe with "Tony's Love Potion No. 23" when noone is looking.

It is the brainwashing. Through her manner of speaking we can tell when Surma is acting of her own free will. Maybe Tony only intended to change Surma's speech pattern and falling in love was an unintended side effect.

Okay, now I'm half convinced again that Anja is faking. Evidence: panel 4.

It's a two man expedition where one man doesn't require prior training/experience? well I guess someone's gotta carry the stuff.

I'm still betting that this "expedition" will merely plant the seeds, and then the flashback will jump forward, and their relationship will evolve further bit by bit. My question: What expedition was Tony and Donnie going to go on, that Surma thinks she can help with?

Sometimes Surma speaks with a heavy accent and sometimes she doesn't. I wonder why.

Okay, now I'm half convinced again that Anja is faking. Evidence: panel 4. or panel 6, the ultra quick recovery after Surma's surprising offer... In the same panel, Im loving another demonstration of the amazing abilities of Donny's emoto-glasses! Haven't seen them go round with surprise before that I can recall....

Sometimes Surma speaks with a heavy accent and sometimes she doesn't. I wonder why. Surma may be self-conscious of her strong accent and seeks to suppress it in "public" situations. However, when agitated (as she is here), or with a good friend who clearly accepts her as she is (with Anja www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=437 ) the accent slips out....

That blurb was necessary, otherwise I'd have to question why Anja was suddenly crying louder. Makes sense. We have a small sampling of such situations with Donnie and with ...Donnie.

Not so fast. Maybe she has been speaking in full dialect the whole time and we're just seeing a translation! 'We've got a foreign exchange student coming to the Court.' 'Where they from?' 'Harrogate.'

Ah. So now we see how Anja may feel responsible for the event(s) that brought Tony and Surma together. If Donald hadn't gone with her to this funeral, he would have gone with Tony on their trip, and Surma and Tony would never have fallen in love. It would be ridiculous for Anja to blame herself for what happened, but maybe she does, a bit. Surma may be self-conscious of her strong accent and seeks to suppress it in "public" situations. However, when agitated (as she is here), or with an good friend who clearly accepts her as she is (with Anja www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=437 ) the accent slips out.... As strong as her accent may be, be thankful that she doesn't speak in full dialect... That second one is amazing! Almost makes me want to move to England.

Also –– come on, guys, do you see those tears? Anja is NOT faking this.
Also Surma is totes volunteering to preclude Anja crying even more. Anja is her main babe, you think she'd leave her with Tony's famous last words, "It will have to be cancelled"? Those are some guilt-inducing cringeries right there. Got to nullify them somehow.
