Surma's face + Tony's body language (spelling "awkward") = Annie He's the coolest bean. I fully expect the next chapter to supply me with decades' worth of Surma avatars.

Plus at least this one starts with the flashback where the last time we had to wait a chapter longer (about a good month or two due to the pacing) and the middle of the story for the flashback and reveal (referring to the chapter where we find out where Tony has been up until he became a teacher).
I just hope the reveal doesn't come of as anti-climatic.

Why did he never tell us he was the fifth member of the Beatles I was going to say he'd have to have been the sixth Beatle, since I believe the fifth spot was already taken. However, in looking up who it was taken by, I discovered that there's actually quite a queue! Donnie Dons, the Baker's Dozenth Beatle?

I knew you would all fall for the elaborate trap Tom had set, and only think about Don's hairstyle.
There's so much more to muse about! Like: Where is James (off training?)? Where is Brinnie (escorting dead Viking warriors to Valhalla?)? Where are they (some kind of common room? The doors don't look like doors of a normal flat to me.)? Where did Tony want to go with Don? Where can I get glasses that always mirror the expressions of my eyes? Argh!

Argh! yeah, it looks like a common room, or study area at school, with messages on a bulletin board, books, a chalk board(?), and several couches. Were Tony and Don planning to be off on some sciencing adventure... launching rockets maybe? Im guessing Anja just found out her dad is gravely ill, and Don is diverting from Tony adventures to offer comfort and support....

Donnie Dons, the Baker's Dozenth Beatle? interesting article, tho only Stu Sutcliffe and Pete Best were ever real permanent members. George Martin's massive musical contributions behind the scenes might have been enough to award him a spot... That would make Don = Beatle #7 or #8. Wonder what instrument he would play... piano, keyboards, synthesizers (if they had continued later into the 70s) maybe? Would match his techie proclivities...

Probably not death, but some sort of accident or illness, perhaps. (And I'm afraid I'm not surprised, either, that the conversation here revolved more around the minor details - such as Donald's look - rather than the story.)

Yeah the story's interesting and all, but... those sideburns. I am curious, though. This is supposed to be the chapter wherein Surma and Tony get together, but Surma looks considerably younger than she did here, when she was clearly dating Eggers. I dunno what to make of it. Also her hair's much longer, which I don't know the significance of.

They all look so 70s that I'm wonder if this actually IS the 70s. In which case the main story takes place in the 90s. Which is impossible since Kat plays games that certainly didn't exist in the 90s.

This group is known to concoct elaborate schemes to get Tony together with girls. What if this is just another scheme to set him up with Surma? Unlikely, I know. I don't really think that's what's happening. It's only a thought that crossed my mind.

I think those are just Tom having some fun.

I think those are just Tom having some fun. This is kinda tenuous evidence, but also, Winsbury references Fast and the Furious, which means it probably can't take place before like 2001ish. Also Tom said Annie and Renard were impressed by Shadow of the Colossus, which puts the date up to 2006 at latest. Kat's favorite Disney movie is Lilo and Stitch, which places the comic at 2002 or later. And Kat likes Homestuck, which puts GKC at 2009. All this came from Chrysoprax by the way.

Eggers as a child in the '60s. Anja in some of the more recent strips has shown some very visible crow's feet around her eyes, leading me to believe that she's currently at least in her 40s. Tony hasn't aged very well at all either, but we've all seen what he's been through. I wouldn't be surprised, however, if he too was in his 40s. Surma died before any of the main storyline started but it's hard to put a pin in her as far as aging goes because she's got magical blood and who knows what that does to the aging process.

I just noticed that Tony's got a gigantic body for such a tiny head. How could Surma resist such sexy proportions?

Is this the first we've heard of Anja's parents? I may need to reread Ties again.

Gunnerkrigg Court: you want some fantastical escapism? How about some real life instead! This group is known to concoct elaborate schemes to get Tony together with girls. What if this is just another scheme to set him up with Surma? Unlikely, I know. I don't really think that's what's happening. It's only a thought that crossed my mind. Well, my first (ironic) thought was: "Well played, Donny, the old 'my girlfriend's dad is sick so I can't come with you, how about you go with this female friend instead' gambit!" But decided it was too cynical. Oh well... But man, this scene feels sort of real. Edit: Maaan, just realized this is the second scene we see Anja crying for a loved one. What kind of sad role has Tom put her in? I'm glad she has Donny.

Maybe this isn't like the other popular magical boarding school tale, and our gang was relatively old when they decided to get children. If the adults are in their 50s in the present day (set in vague 2010s), they would have been born in the 1960s, and thus they would be young adults in the late 1970s (when this flashback would be set). And then they were in their late 30s when Annie/Kat were born.

Edit: Maaan, just realized this is the second scene we see Anja crying for a loved one. What kind of sad role has Tom put her in? I'm glad she has Donny. I actually did consider that when I came up with the idea of this being a trick to set Tony and Surma up. The first time we see Anja crying (well, chronologically the second), she's red-faced and she makes sobby noises. It's just gross crying in its truest form. This time, however, Anja's hiding her face, but what little we can see indicates that her face is not red. Also, she doesn't make any sad noises. This is not the exact same way we've seen Anja cry in the past, is what I'm getting at. That's kind of what made me think she might be faking. Another thing I'd like to mention is that Tom has said the comic takes place in present day. He also said that Surma was late-30s when she died, which means she was mid-20s when her daughter was born, and so was Anja (assuming Kat was born and not assembled). So that's that. They're just dressed like it's the 70s because they never broke free of that awesome era, I guess. Edit: I've also found out something that surprises me a little. I thought it was odd and coincidental that Anja and Surma would have their daughters in the same year, but it turns out they didn't. Annie is a year older, apparently. So why are they in the same classes? Huh. Food for thought.
