What's so bizarre is that Surma obviously had an affiliation with the psychopomps. Possibly even worked for them at some point. And yet she was the Court Medium. Do the psychopomps single out medium candidates for their macabre work, or is there something about fire elementals that draws them towards these career opportunities?

Ahh, Annie really looks like a kid in this page. Younger somehow, I guess cause she's more relaxed around Kat and not dealing with life or death matters. Edit: She looks vulnerable, that's the word.

You would think the job Annie is talking about is being a psychopomp, but actually Muut opening a flower shop and needs someone working at cash register.

Curious. Is this a call you get when, in other circumstances, you would die? Is "working for them" same thing as joining them? And what if you are part fire elemental and decide to have a child, instead of taking the job? Maybe there was more to the circumstances of Surma going to the ether than just nothing being there to take.

Annie's phrasing tells me a lot. "One day I will have to go and work for them." "One day" implies that there is a day when they will NEED Annie, but that day hasn't come yet. Maybe they will call on her in an upcoming time of war when they're short-staffed, so to speak. "Go and work for them" implies something much more interesting: that there's a physical psychopomp HQ out there somewhere!

Sorry for being so obtuse, but which gesture is Kat making in panel 2?

That is customary with Faustian bargains, even when you wish for someone else's restoration to blissful youth. Piece of advice, Annie: from now on, don't sigh for time to stop, or for the moment to stretch, lest it will. ("In diesem Augenblick ging über die Brücke ein geradezu unendlicher Verkehr.")

this could be interpreted a few ways. one day they will call on her and she will work for them...once in a while? Or as Foresterr mentioned above, would their call mean she dies at the time of their choosing? one the one hand, given the weight of the choice seems like the pomps choosing when her life is done seems likely, but on the other hand, seems like she's more valuable the way she is, still alive as a sub-contractor.

Yeah, that's not ominous at all. Though, Surma worked for the psychopompm, so... not so bad?

Annie is becoming a leader.
She got the team together, got them to go beyond their normal limits to do something no one else could, and not one of them would have been able to do otherwise.
Then when it went bad she stepped up and took responsibility, trading her future for the future of one of the people she led there.
Annie is turning into a great leader, and neither the court, nor the Psychopomps has any clue what they are dealing with once she embraces it.
Also Kat is amazing. The Angel has spoken Annie, the matter is closed.
Also Also seriously, who is going to mess with a group led by a fire elemental, the Angel of the robots who can see through the ether, the demon cousin of Coyote, a fencer who can teleport and a guy who manipulates probability in their favor. Nevermind that they are armed with ancient magic tech that no one understands and coyote's tooth. They could just walk into the headmaster's chamber and announce they were taking over and really, no one but Jones could stop them. (although I'd love to test that tooth vs. Jones, just to see)

...because what if they will call on her in a year? A half? Next chapter!? (Obviously it will mean Kat becomes the main protagonist and we move onto epic religious struggle between synthetic, organic and robotic lifeforms)

50 Ways
The problem is all inside your head, she said to me The answer is easy if you take it logically I'd like to help you in your struggle to be free There must be fifty ways to kill the psychopomps
She said it's really not my habit to intrude For the more I hope my meaning won't be lost or misconstrued So I repeat myself, at the risk of being cruel There must be fifty ways to kill the psychopomps, fifty ways to kill the psychopomps
Just stab in the back, Jack, make a new plan, Stan Don't need to be coy, Roy, just listen to me Use Coyotes sword, Gord, don't need to discuss much Just drop off the bomb, Tom, and get yourself free

So I Married an Axe Murderer II, Scene 3
Husband: "The first is always the hardest, it will be easier now" Wife: "But I've never..."
Husband: "Sure you have, Mort..." Wife: "But he wanted..."
Husband: "That is what suicide prevention lines are for. Then Jeanne and boyfriend... you could have gotten them to ROTD like Jones did with Mort, you could have got Jeannie to heal Andy first, but..." Wife, angrily: "But the psychopomps..."
Husband: "Yes, give in to your anger! With each passing moment..."

Was not expecting a Paul Simon reference. Props for creativity. Maybe George (Parley) instead of Gord. Jan (Janet) instead of Stan... "Just stab in the back, Jack, make a new plan, Jan, Don't need to be macabre, Rob, just listen to me, Use Coyotes sword, George, don't need to discuss mo', Just set us up the bomb, Tom, and get yourself gone" This is fun.

I'm kind of betting on her being called on for the 'weird cases', like the one she did as a child. The psychopomps lost her alignment with them after her mother died, so if she won't help as a friend, well, then through some coercing? If I'm correct (and let's face it, I'm probably not ) they need her alive, so she can meddle in the ~real~ world (which they may not). (& the fact that they are not allowed to meddle with the world of the living also implies they can not choose when she dies)

Or as Foresterr mentioned above, would their call mean she dies at the time of their choosing? Technically, she won't die because the 'pomps are not dead (which is why they can be killed). But taking a permanent position as a guide would be something close to an afterlife, I think.

(although I'd love to test that tooth vs. Jones, just to see) Like everyone who got far in the Court, headmaster Llanwellyn must possess some exceptional skill. His daughter (Janet) is a master archer, so I guess one of her parents has a similar ability. Probably her mother, the headmaster doesn't seem to be the fighting type, but I expect he can pull out some nasty tricks in case of an attack. Maybe he has command words to override all nearby computers (and concealed automated weapon systems). OR he is simply a puppet for the Court's higher circle of leadership. Anyway, a place like the Court wouldn't still stand after all this time, if it weren't able to contain a mad scientist's and his/her friends' uprising. No, the more I think about it, were the Scooby Gang foolish enough to try what you describe, they would be greeted by a small army of humans and loyal robots with high-tech weapons and etheric protections, and someone saying: "Did you really think we were not aware of your shenanigans of the past years?" Remember the Court tracks everyone, surveils everything, has agents everywhere and obviously had no problem even finding Tony after he had been spit out from some other weird dimension and left in the desert.

Another thing your post reminded me of, though. Where is Reynardine? Was he aware of Annie's plan? If yes, why didn't he participate? I cannot imagine he would knowingly let Annie walk into mortal danger without coming along. And if she didn't tell him, what will be his reaction when he finds out?

I had, in my previous explanations, mentioned that it is important — in judging the actions of the main characters — to remember that they are children and they still have quite a lot to learn before we can judge them by the same standards we hold adults to.
In this conversation between her and Annie, Kat has essentially showcased that we can go ahead and treat her as an adult.

An odd thought: I'm kind of wondering now if Annie was Surma's bid to escape a similar contract. Like, "OK, I'll pour out my life essence into this new body. Now I'm a different person and that person has no obligations towards you!"
It would explain why they're so eager to have Annie. As far as they're concerned, they were tricked out of her and want her back.
