Their culture is full of subtlety? Nah. I have nothing.

How the heck is that pronounced, anyway? I was thinking "eye-loo", but if she's shortening it to Ilu, which really IS just "eye-loo", then "Ayilu" must sound different.
...does that make any sense, or have I been awake too long?

Because fairies and -I suppose- forest animals have such a dissimilarity between theirs and human culture, it seems like there is no standard by which they measure the quality of the names they are given. As a result, it appears they inject extreme positivity into any name given because they have some assumption that the name is inherently valuable (it is in terms of the benefits naming provides). But it would be interesting to see a varied set of names given and the general reaction to them. Our sample size is small but does suggest a trend. Perhaps any name that doesn't qualify as an insult is something they can appreciate, and can be due to a number of reasons: Desperation to obtain a name; belief that human names are special/that each name given is of high quality no matter what; even some kind of emotional predisposition to finding the positives in everything (though this seems unlikely compared to the other two) related to their names.

Given it was a "shortening" of I Love You, I heard it as Aye-i-lu, with 3 syllables. whichever way you pronounce it I'm not sure she is too happy about it...

And that was Ayilu's happy face? It was Ayilu's ayilu face. Anyway there are many names derived from the word love. And then, now there is one more of those.

It's all a big misunderstanding caused by Fire Head Fatty over there. (but what can you do, other than make cat's eyes at her?)

Does...does this count as calling it? Next comic, Ayilu will grab Red by the collar and be like: THAT

Until proven otherwise, probably on Monday, I choose to believe...
Ayilu truly loves her name but is angry that Red didn't affirm her love, thus the conflicting emotions/signals in the last panel.

Since it looks like the name's going to stick, I will claim a cookie for this comment I made right before the chapter started: Calling it now, they are going to be about to name her Blue, but something happens and they accidently give her a proper name. But because I actually voted "Blue" on the poll, I'm gonna give half of the cookie to charity.

Maybe, Tom decided to make this chapter about profile pics, because we've seen plenty of "faces" so far. This last panel is a truly epic one.

Red: "Yeah, Ilu! That's your new nickname! It's short for I love - uh..." Ilu: DETERMINED STARE INTENSIFIES

If you shopped fangmouths onto Red in every panel nobody would notice.

Aww this is so cute though. I love how much more meaningful the name is than Blue.
She was named through the power of LOVE

It really is a nice name.
Unfortunately, it ruins our chance at referring to the two of them together as "Bled" or "Rue."
(Rayilu? Redilu? Ayired?)

Maybe she likes it because it's something Red made up on her own and specifically for her, rather than the second half of an in-joke between Annie and Kat?
