I think Tom's trolling us. Yes, yes he is.

Well, not all of us. Tom is Annie and he really can't describe what she might be seeing. So, we are really all in the same boat right now on the surface of the river. So many symbols, so many opportunities for interpretation.

More or less what I predicted. We've been tommed once again. Yes, we should coin "tomming" as meaning master-level trolling. Tom: if we don't get at least a glimpse of what Annie sees, like at the end of the first ROTD chapter ( www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=1321 ), I will yell at you the next time we meet.

"Why don't I ever get to see the cool stuff?" Be careful what you wish for, Kat. Remember how you freaked out after seeing Ketrak and Ankou. Also, you're a sceptic, that's why. We sceptics never get to see cool stuff like ghosts and aliens.

"Why don't I ever get to see the cool stuff?" Be careful what you wish for, Kat. Remember how you freaked out after seeing Ketrak and Ankou. Huh. If her etheric vision reduces what she sees to its most mundane manifestation, what did she see when she saw ketrak?

I really hope we get to see the undoing of this lock from Annie's perspective, if only because it would look way more awesome than Kat's. Awww, darn.

If her etheric vision reduces what she sees to its most mundane manifestation, what did she see when she saw ketrak? I don't think her powers work on the guides for some reason. She saw Ankou like everyone else did. So Ketrak probably wasn't reduced to anything when she saw him, is my guess.

We sceptics never get to see cool stuff like ghosts and aliens. Kat vision only works when she peers into or enters the ether realm. The psychopomps, that is their true forms, who they really are at their core. They also manifested in the real world. Elf guy is still the elf guy even though he's a ghost. That's not who he was. ROTD guys were not a giant monster or a vampire, they were once humans and are wearing costumes.

I think Tom's trolling us. Well, he is asking us a riddle of sorts, while we try to cross his metaphorical bridge... Now I'm wondering, if Tom actually owns a bridge somewhere. I imagine to cross it, you have to prove Xn + Yn = Zn has no whole number solution when n has a value greater than 2. Or something with Terry Pratchett level of cleverness.

Tom, this whole chapter has been super fun. And I actually do think we're getting to see the cool stuff. The cool stuff like Annie's face in the penultimate panel

If I had to guess what visuals Annie is seeing right now it would probably be something like this page, but in addition to the metal bones/chains that are part of Kat, large metal bars made from the lock-pick would be coming from her and branching off like tree branches or like forks of lightning to touch down on the various moving parts of the maze. If we ever were to see the scene I wouldn't be surprised if it was something similar to that, but that's just my interpretation.

Way back when, Parley joked that Smitty's power was to make everything boring. I guess it's really Kat who has that power.

you have to prove Xn + Yn = Zn has no whole number solution when n has a value greater than 2. "I have a most wonderful conception of how Annie sees Kat's lock-picking, but it would break the constraints of the page layout to draw it."

She also know that Annie freaked out from how Kat looks right now, but didn't from seeing Ketrak. She's just too excited to put it together right now. We can hope that Tom reserves that one for something more thematically appropriate, however.

I'm picturing Kat's god-form picking up the lock picks and Annie sees them transform into a powerful weapon, like a sword or staff. As Kat uses them, the sword would slice through the maze, or perhaps the staff would push the walls aside like Moses parting the red sea.
Edit: Well, that's probably too simple and doesn't explain why Annie couldn't describe it. Ah well.

The thing is, Kat is the one picking the lock, so what Annie is seeing doesn't really matter - unless she can correlate it to what Kat says she's doing and feeling with the lockpicks.
