Ok, I'm going to call it The Crown. Here's a big picture. We've seen it a few times, Gamma's shirt in Tom's Deviant, some of the pics in 'Postin' Pictures' thread from oorahairforce... i'll get links to all of them as I find them. Post them as you find them too! If you can, circle them in paint or something. ^^ It looks like it mightactually be the number 113. An admittedly cursory reading of the archives didn't turn it up anywhere... But...

I'm going to assume 113 has some sort of significance to Tom and forget about it.
It could be for a really intricate reason, it could be for a simple reason (like a date, 1/1/3), or it could be that Tom just really likes the number 113.
I mean, 12 has a lot of significance to me, but it's just because I think it's a really cool number.
Of course, it could just be that Tom has no special reason for including it and it is only special by virtue of the fact that he has included it in a lot of his drawings.

Well, 113 has some sort of meaning to Tom, and it goes back a ways. I don't know where to look for his artwork beyond DA, so I'm out of leads, and not versed on popular culture anyway. So if its from some favorite game or movie or something I'll never make the connection.
But, this has been way more fun than studying, and I got to look at a ton of great artwork!

from Tom's note to [82]:
Special announcement: This weekend I finished the last page of the first volume of my comic. The story is 113 pages long, and with bonus pages that brings it to 120 pages. In the next few weeks I should be able to compile it together and get it printed. I'm doing it mainly because I've always wanted to get a comic printed, however I can let other people go to the store (on lulu.com) and buy them if they want.
P.S. oora, I guess I owe you an apology.

Normally I wouldn't think too much about this but it's happened far too many times to ignore, now!
Could this have to do with A-113 at all?

Heh, I always just figured it was his lucky number or something. It's in plain sight on an avatar he uses in some places, like DrunkDuck.
It pops up in the comic sometimes, too. At least twice in the Two Strange Girls chapter.

... look what google "1/13" I'm feeling lucky finds...
1 Corinthians 13:1-13
If I speak in the tongues of men and angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a tinkling symbol.
And if I have prophecy and know all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.
And if I dole out all my goods, and if I deliver my body that I may boast but have not love, nothing I am profited.
Love is long suffering, love is kind, it is not jealous, love does not boast, it is not inflated.
It is not discourteous, it is not selfish, it is not irritable, it does not enumerate the evil. It does not rejoice over the wrong, but rejoices in the truth It covers all things, it has faith for all things, it hopes in all things, it endures in all things.
Love never falls in ruins; but whether prophecies, they will be abolished; or tongues, they will cease; or knowledge, it will be superseded.
For we know in part and we prophecy in part.
But when the perfect comes, the imperfect will be superseded.
When I was an infant, I spoke as an infant, I reckoned as an infant;
when I became [an adult], I abolished the things of the infant.
For now we see through a mirror in an enigma, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know as also I was fully known.
But now remains faith, hope, love,
these three;
but the greatest of these is love.

Page 152, second panel : www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=152A small 113 appears above the pipe! Yeah, I don't really think it has any sort of significance at all... I figure it's just a little symbol Tom likes to put in his art. I have one myself.

That was actually the 'original' sighting from mrw, I think. Also, it says 'door' 113. Hmm

That comic is actually RDT number 113, though. Might be carefull planning/pleading on Tom's part.
Some of the deviantart pieces have 113 in their name for no reason though.

What is it? Probably nothing we can guess. Tom's an artist and this symbol has ovbiously been stylized. I think we can be sure it is a kind of signature for Tom. But that's probably it. I'm not interested in digging anymore, but I'll add a few of my thoughts for those who are.
... Welcome to intrusive internet fame, Tom ...
First, we have no way of knowing if the "real" symbol really consists of the digits 113 or 311, or even digits at all. It's been stylized. That means it can look like something other than what it really is. It can be many things at once. Here's the possibilities as I see them:
a) it is a stylized number 113 or 311. Numerologists go wild!! Break out the Kabbalah! Crack the NHS!
b) it is some kind of ascii art symbol. Like 1337-speak it just happens to also look like 113. Ever notice how a serif T can look like a stylized 3?
c) it is a stylized Kanji stroke that also happens to look like 113. Tom uses these numbers to represent the stylized Kanji wherever numbers are more appropriate. A sneaky Kanji sig that can be placed in filenames.
d) it is a made-up abstract symbol which is none of the above. It just happens to look like 113 and Tom sometimes draws (and types) it as 113 to be extra obscure. Tom enjoys being obscure.
e) it is some complex layering of some or all of the above. Many symbols in one. It has multiple intertwining meanings. It may simultaneously be 113 and Kanji and ascii art, etc. The more meanings the better.
My money ($0.02) is on c). However the Kanji for "tea" (as in tea-san) has no obvious relation to the 113 symbol. But I know zero about Japanese calligraphy. There may be a way of writing the strokes for "tea" so that part or all of it looks something like 113. Dunno. Maybe 113 is the code number for the Kanji for "tea" (for "tea-san") in some character table somewhere... indirection upon indirection until the mind bursts. Enough.
Anyhow, it's a neat sig, Tom. I hope the glare doesn't get to you. You don't seem much like a spotlight seeker.
f) it's a stylized shoulder patch from when Tom was in the Army (yes, the US Army!), and that's why oorahAirForce knows what it is... Military buffs go wild!! Contact your Okinawa based friends quick!

Neat ideas, Brice! It would be kind of silly to put a mysterious recurring symbol in your work if you didn't want the attention just a little bit, don't you think? But it predates GC from what I can tell, and therefore not really interesting anymore. It's probably just some inside joke that wouldn't make any sense to us anyhow. So that's one less spotlight... ;D

I really needed a guest comic at the time, and I was friends with Tom so I asked him to help me out. It being number 113 was a strange coincidence but we both remarked on it.

So you're in it it too, then. Whatever it is.
Much praise for RDT, by the way.

So you're in it it too, then. Whatever it is. Kinda, I get let in on some things because I know him personally, but Tom's stuff is all his. I don't feel free to comment on most of the speculation in this forum, haha. I know he prefers to keep things wide open and unexplained, both about the comic and himself, but I might say something that's just my own opinion etc. I'm not allowed to give nothin' away.

And you don't take bribes, I guess? I dunno, how much would it cost to ruin everyone's fun eh? Also you could bribe me but Tom could karate kick me in the face like Sam Beckett. That's a risk I'm not willing to take.

Thread necromancy!
The current chapter (18) is about two robots: S1 and S13. And with S13's cpu inside S1's body, would that make him S113?

...I'm just jealous because I never noticed the 113s. I'll look from now on though.
