Jeanne being able to recognize Dragonslayer powers on sight brings is terrifying, in that she's probably on par with or better than a full Dragonslayer. I wonder how they're gonna label Blue's gravestone, since she doesn't even have a name yet. This is where I'd say I called it, but with the cut to out-of-illusion Jeanne showing our perspective is about to change and that the illusion didn't instantly shatter, I'm sure she's not dead yet. Especially with how Directly Between The Eyes is probably the most instant death you can get. Actually this makes sense if it's still an illusion, Red's reaction could help seal the deal and Parley can play the fight off as Fae tricks.

Especially with how Directly Between The Eyes is probably the most instant death you can get. I'm still hoping for some kind of trick here, but honestly I doubt it. The looks on the faces of Red and Parley suggest that this is definitely not part of the plan. Unless Blue acted on a spur-of-the-moment impulse to protect herself by tricking Jeanne, and the other two are also caught in her illusion? After all, she's appeared dead before (but that time Red knew what was going on...)

We *might* find that, in reality, Jeanne has skewered Smitty's rolled up jumper or something but, no, it's not looking good for wassername. (Friday prediction: we're back with Annie)

Perhaps, but I'm not feeling as optimistic as you are about the situation. The skewering of blue and the almost-instantaneous falling away of the illusion seems too linked. We all knew Jeanne was a tremendously talented swordswoman, and has killed many many people before. Maybe she will live long enough to be given a name by Red or someone as she dies, but I think she's gone. I just hope that Parley and the others can control Jeanne enough to avoid more casualties, or Smitty's luck powers can control the hands of fate to prevent this getting out of control

(Friday prediction: we're back with Annie) I'm betting on the other end of the sword. Who got skewered? Wait, till the next episode...

Nice, foreshadowing to help my long shot guess. In all reality, other webcomics have just trained me to not trust a death until it says DEAD in the corner with a faded out Nicolas Cage in the background, or at least crossed out eyes.

Egads. this is nearly the first death on-screen Well, there was this robot Jack clobbered, which to me felt quite nasty too. Can't bicker about CPUs this time, though. (although there is still this, I guess ) Unlikely. This time the illusion is more like an overlay on reality, not something separate. (not that I would mind )

The page wherein Red shows that despite the rest of her class and Annie being taken in by Red's friend's illusion she never fell for it? As opposed to today's page, where Red is clearly shocked?

Oh no,and she was just two days away from retirem... I mean, from getting a name! D8
Buuut, I doubt this is her actual death here. Sure, we've been primed with Robot's scene earlier, but remember, Red and Blue are only standing in the ether, they are kneeling on the ground in the real world.
Or at least this is the hope that will tide me over until Friday.

Assuming the blue one dies, a guide will appear.
Also assuming the blue one dies, I'm curious to see how the scooby gang explains this one.

Gunnerkrigg has talked about death a lot though. Not least preparing us all for what happens with the ROTD chapters. Assuming they are successful in saving Jeanne, Annie may be taking two souls into the ether tonight.

This calls for divine intervention. Go Coyote! Even I cannot restore life, young one. It is the one force in this world that is beyond My mighty power. It took my son from Me, long ago, aeons ago, so long ago I nearly forget, yes yes. A fine strong pup he was, My greatest source of pride, the joy in My heart. But he was half-mortal - alas, that I would fall for a human! - and in a blink of My eye, Death claimed him. Without him, My tongue was ash in My mouth. My laughter ceased, My heart like lead. And what am I without a laugh? Nothing more than dry bones and the hollow whistle of the wind. I was dying. I was dead without him. I was consumed by a hope, a figment of a fragment of a dream, that he might escape Death's icy claws (so much sharper than My own, yes yes, I admit it) and be waiting for Me somewhere over the horizon. I wandered the earth, searching in vain for the sound of his voice, the touch of his fur, the gleam of his eyes. And soon I, who could hold the very moon in My jaws, was too weak to even stand. So I wept and prayed to the Great Spirit above, who holds dominion over the veil between the worlds - what the fools at the Court call the ether. And answering my prayer, he descended in the form of a great raven. Perhaps he was just a mirage. Or a delusion. (Or a bird.) I was very hungry, after all, yes yes. Not many wisps in the endless desert. He perched in silence, staring at Me. I shouted and cursed his cruelty. I screamed defiance at the heavens, and I demanded My boy back. And spent, I collapsed and waited for My own death. Perhaps if I could not find My son in this world, I would be together again with him in the next. Wearing a sad and distant smile, the Great Spirit reached out and touched My snout with a single feather. And suddenly, in a blaze of light, I saw. When My son had been torn from me, the Guides took him into the ether, so the world could continue to spin. My son was not gone. He would never be gone. I am a creature of the ether. I had been searching for him when in fact he had always been inside of Me, and I only lived on because of his dreams and memories, and those of the millions who had gone before him into the ether. Nothing is truly lost in the end. He showed Me the Great Secret - when My son left this world, he was weaved into the fabric of creation, and he would remain so until the end of creation itself. I weep not for the dead, but for those who outlive them, abandoned and alone in the night.

This calls for divine intervention. Go Coyote! As if. Knowing the guy, he's probably sharing popcorn with the wandering eye right now. It's not like he ever helped the other psychopomps. You know, the ones who died there.

While I do hope this is kinda same thing, unfortunately at page 991 we have a 'dead' Fairy in the mind-world, and sitting fairy in real world... ...Here we have Jeanne skewering Blue's face in mind-world, and skewering someone in real world too. So yeah, we might have a first on-screen casualty here (props to Tom for driving the point in without usual gorey parts, that takes some skill!)

There is a distinct change in expression between illusion Jeanne (=angry, determined, looking at illusion/Blue's apparently skewered head) and real/ghost Jeanne (=not angry, more puzzled[?], and looking slightly down/lower). Did real Blue duck just in time, but lost her concentration and broke the illusion in the process?

Stiiiill not convinced because while switching pages a bit it seems to me that ghost!Jeanne is capable only of Calm Face and Wrinkles of Fury expressions. I mean, it doesn't seem that her eyeholes or eyebrows are otherwise capable of 'moving'.

I may be over-interpreting, but aside from non-angry eyebrows (not matching illusion Jeanne - at least not rage-Jeanne eyebrows), it seems that ghost Jeanne's nose is apparently closer to her mouth and we are seeing proportionately more of the top of her head - i.e., she is looking slightly down now (I'm assuming the ghost Jeanne image is a fraction of a second after the illusion image). Maybe....?

Excuse my French but
Oh fuck
Red, now would be a GREAT TIME to manifest some KICK ASS POWER that's gonna SAVE EVERYONE'S LIFE.
edit: Parley what happened to all that teleporting from several chapters ago?? Maybe now (definitely 3 seconds ago) would be a GREAT TIME TO START DOING THAT.[/b]
edit 2: This whole situation is a mess. Abort? Y/Y

Assuming the blue one dies, a guide will appear. What guide would be crazy enough to go down to that side on the Annan river while Jeanne the rage ghost is capable of killing guides?
