"It" appears to be Diego's manuscript that she tried to refuse in A Bad Start. Or more probably, the knowledge/plan gained from it. |

I'm pretty sure that we're in a flashback on the creation of either the detector and/or container, or a component to help test them (i.e. something that will seem to be the arrow, in all ways relevant to those gadgets).
