Flashback time! There used to be lots more animals and plants at the Court. (Assuming this is the Court, that is. I wonder if the deer talked.) It's sad to see what the Court lost in its schism from the Forest. EDIT: It has been 37 minutes. No replies?

Maybe we get a handful of wordless pages like this before returning to the present. A bit like the seven pages telling Jeanne's story in 'The Coward Heart'. Beautiful pages, and a great way to tell a story.

Wild guess here: This looks more like the ruins in the forest Isengrim showed Annie earlieron second thought, this also looks similar to the more rural areas of the current court, as witnessed by Renard and the lot, too.

Back then, the Court looked kinda less crummy.

But it has also been hinted that there was a mix of trees and buildings on both sides of the ravine. gunnerkrigg.com/?p=650 As if the divide was made through a combined court-forest society.

I must have it pretty bad, because when I zoom into the last panel, I see Kat and Paz sitting on the right side of the fountain.

I'm guessing that this is before the Court was officially founded, when humans and creatures lived in peace in the Forest. These buildings don't look like they grew from the Seed Bismuth, at least in this sepia lighting.

Having had a look-over, I'd say Georgian-era from the buildings. Possibly Regency.
The ladies' hat seems like it's supposed to be a bonnet but the dimensions are kinda ludicrous (even by the standards of 'high society' of the day). This supports it being Regency. Top hats on the other hand generally weren't that tall (particularly in the Regency when they were 'new'), though there was a period where people would go out of their way to show-off that way. The style and height potentially pushes the date firmly towards the early Victorian period.

So yeah; we're talking in the vicinity of 150-200 years ago, which isn't actually that far, all things considered.
e: In fact, when I look back on the people supposedly involved in the split within the Court, it would be anachronistic if this represents the pre-split Court, since those pages seemed a good hundred years older again.

That's my take on the history as well - that there was no "Court" and "Forest," but one society made up of technologically- and naturally-inclined folk alike. There was no ravine until Coyote split them down the middle, leaving (at first) two similarly-configured settlements of trees+buildings. Eventually the new Court pulled out most of the trees, and the new Forest pulled down most of the buildings.

(Assuming this is the Court, that is. I wonder if the deer talked.) What do you mean? Of course they talked. In deer-language. Just like <snuffles>'s friend talked in rabbit-language.

I got the feeling the Jeanne era was earlier than this, as well. Do we know exactly how long Jeanne was down there, before Wraith Ravine started happening in full swing? Maybe, it took a long while for her to "forge white hot into a sentinel". This could be the first time that Mean Jeanne killed.

Apparently there is still discussion of what happened when so I think I'll have to bite here. Those buildings do line up more than you can really discount, unless Tom deliberately used those buildings as inspiration due to their proximity. This does however make dating even more complex. Instead of the 1850s or so, we're jumping ahead to the 1890s or even more recently. Which makes it seem even more incongruous. And I doubt by that period there was much in the way of trees in the middle of Birmingham...

Tom's probably just using the Birmingham buildings as models, not trying to imply that this is actually taking place in Birmingham.
