Hiding in plain sight, and nobody suspects a thing! (Except Annie)

"You're the only person who knows!" ...other than everyone on the forum? Masters of subtlety, they are! Thread title should have been "Three hours long..."

" . . . and the way you keep telling everyone that you're not boyfriend and girlfriend - even when the subject hasn't been brought up - then wink extremely slowly, in unison."

This is the exact page that I wanted to follow Friday's update. Annie's response is perfect.
It also feels like Annie is about to be sucked into a side quest.

Who are the people in the last panel though? I can't recall off the top of my head.

Honestly, I love how so many people were anticipating some big blow-up from Annie only to be met with this page
Annie's never seemed interested in romance and I'm glad that hasn't changed. I am anticipating some bewilderment, however, if she learns that Kat tried to set her up. Like "but.....why?"

And now Annie is asked to pretend to be William's girlfriend, as an elaborate scheme to hide the obvious.
Or maybe that was the idea and they won't go through with it anymore.

I get that Annie didn't know, but why did Janet say "And you're the only person that knows!" Is that sarcasm? 'Cause I think this page www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=935 proves otherwise. Are they stringing along poor Annie?

Are they stringing along poor Annie? Read the subsequent pages. People began to suspect, so Willie and Janet deflected suspicion by making a joke of it.

Are they stringing along poor Annie? They followed that with an outlandish tale, and it appears no one believes them. EDIT: preus preempted me

The real mystery here is who is Elgamore's date? Future Mrs. Eglamore presumably, so that works out handily enough.

What if, though the forest would not be directly involved, this WAS a Romeo and Juliet style story, but with class/position of power instead of species?

The real mystery here is who is Elgamore's date? Future Mrs. Eglamore presumably, so that works out handily enough. And the uniform shows this is Past Eglamore... they can only meet in the present. Which is in the past. Because this is a flashback. If the comic will have another present in the future they can meet again. Mystery solved

They actually made a stage production about their not-a-relationship?
...this comic is stretching my suspension of disbelief. I mean, I can buy that Annie wouldn't understand, she is a bit unaware of social cues, but surely someone else connected the dots?

I mean, I can buy that Annie wouldn't understand, she is a bit unaware of social cues, but surely someone else connected the dots? Personally, I think the joke is that everyone sees the clues, but either assumes that: A) they're hamming it up to troll everyone, and aren't actually dating, or B) they're dating, and nobody wants to tell them that everyone knows.

Oh ok. So this is going to become THAT story, the fake relationship to hide the real one.
I know Tom likes subverting tropes sometimes, I hope this is one of those times, I really hate this kind of story.
EDIT: And no I am not hating on Tom, I still believe that he rarely does anything in the comic if it not going to have important repercussions in the future and am interested in seeing how this turns out, its just that this kind of relationship trickery always makes me feel uncomfortable.

This page was the obvious conclusion that everyone on the forum refused to believe. That yes, everyone in Annie's class truly is that oblivous

...And no I am not hating on Tom... Despite what's been suggested a few times recently, no one's interested in hating on Tom on this forum Nothing wrong with honest critique of a story, though.
