This conversation is so fascinating, I wish I could add to it, but although I consider myself pretty good with biology I really have nothing to say that would contribute to anyone's theories. I'm learning a lot, though.
I will say that I agree with imaginaryfriend's and Jelly Jellybean's interpretations of what the heck all those eyes mean.
Will somebody tell me what a "cortical homunculus" is? Sounds vaguely alchemical, which fits perfectly well with the Gunnerverse...

There are bacteria that add electrons to their ATP directly from environmental ions and electricity. Not too efficient, but this removes the need for food and respiration. To paraphrase, perhaps "synthetic life finds a synthetic way." Interesting idea... but Im not sure that could power/run/feed a macro-scale complex multicellular structure like the arm that way. Life does "find a way" but that takes millions of years of evolutionary trial and error... Kat has to have it work right now! (Or on a much faster timescale at least... ) dangit, the picture isn't showing up for me... here's just a link, then.

A cortical homunculus is a mapping-by-body-part visual representation of the regions of the brain that keeps track of what and where your limbs are. The regions that manage each of your fingers are right next to each other, and it's all pretty much in the same order as the body parts actually are.

Thanks.
