Do you even praise, heathens? My fellow servant of our Lady of Machines, let us read our Holy scripture to the unbelievers, so they may be cleansed in Her light: ~~ Cogs 2:72

Time for some new theological revelations? "Not to put a too fine point on this, but the boot-up log shows that now I apparently have a soul" (and the psychopomps will finally have to employ an electrician...)

According to Muut, as of Chapter 8, there wasn't a psychopomp of robots. Some people think that Kat will become that psychopomp in the future, but for now, the common assumption is that there isn't one. Yet? Part of this issue is that no robot has truly died yet (at least by our standards; Robot has a differing perspective on the matter). After all, if a robot can be reactivated (as Kat did back in Chapter 33), its essence can't really have moved on to become one with the ether. And I'm not willing to accept robot chicken wings as entities needing a psychopomp. Again, to new readers, click on my signature to learn more about my thoughts on the matter

"Oh. Oh. ... And now I'm a Hedonist." I'm guessing, the sensations and "revelations" he'll have, are similar to suddenly being able to see a new color. Nothing on the palette. Just completely new. He might explain it to Kat and Paz, but how would he describe such things to his robot brethren?

I can taste the universe..."

The ship cpu is still intact, probably being studied for criminal behaviour.

Last Monday, we had the first page of a technology chapter. Then on Tuesday afternoon nature turned off my electricity for eight days, two hours. Oh the irony.
Then I come back to this? What an incredible (and discussion-ripe) chapter start.

That was a really fast reboot. When my computer reboots, I have enough time for a quick game of Risk before it comes back up.

Not sure which is more impressive.. that Kat's figured out the diegocode to such proficiency that she can apparently write more of it herself, or that she's also figured out a way to manipulate and transfer it intact using everyday computers.

"Oh. Oh. ... And now I'm a Hedonist." I'm guessing, the sensations and "revelations" he'll have, are similar to suddenly being able to see a new color. Nothing on the palette. Just completely new. Like, maybe a greenish purple?

"Strange experience" is not an expression I would associate with Robot's vocabulary. Also not sure if that's only slightly terrifying, or very terrifying.

I am reminded of Roger Zelazny's "For A Breath I Tarry", about a robot trying to become a Man. It is here. This is the Full Zelazny, heady stuff. Do not consume while operating heavy machinery or small children.

Do not consume while operating heavy machinery or small children. Oh maaan, that story was good. And the ending was happy but I am crying real tears over here T_T Must be one of those illogical human reactions. Zelazny stories are big in the former Soviet lands, so my mom made sure I read them. I guess I never read this one? Also reminds me of this book by Stanislaw Lem en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fables_for_Robots

Do not consume while operating heavy machinery or small children. I've been playing The Talos Principle. Are you familiar with the game? This story synchronizes well with it. If you're a gamer and you like puzzle games, I highly recommend The Talos Principle. It's currently on sale on Steam for a little under $14, and well worth it, IMO. Thoughts on the story: I liked it. I don't agree that the primary distinction between a man and a machine is biological. I think that a machine is capable of emulating a man without creating a biological body, and that a perfectly emulated man is identical to a biological one.

Yeah, the characters in-game tend to disagree with you no matter what options you choose I don't think that a non-biological organism can't be human (hopefully you caught the double-negatives there).

Ungh, just had a scary thought... now I'm imagining Robot (or the Cruise ship, rather) becoming some twisted WAU-esque being from SOMA. Or just... just anything from that game, really.
Oh lord, imagine non-humanoid life-forms of the Robots at Gunnerkrigg Court turning into those monstrosities...

I think I'm going to go look up what else this guy's written. My favorites are this one, "A Rose For Ecclesiastes", and the novel Lord of Light. "The Doors Of His Face, The Lamps Of His Mouth" is high on many lists, as is "The Furies". "Rose", "Doors", and "Furies" are collected together, along with "The Graveyard Heart", in Four for Tomorrow.I greatly enjoyed Jack of Shadows, and probably need to read it again. The Amber series is greatly loved by many, and is possibly his best known work. Lord of Light is, quite simply, one of those stories you must read if you wish to count yourself well-read. It is one of the stories Science Fiction was created to produce. Like the other Lord of story of note, it reads out loud very well indeed. And it contains one of the greatest puns of all time. Collect Zelazny recommendations as you will, but I can't urge you strongly enough not to seek out any reviews before reading.
