" But...Mort gave me that!"
Ysengrin makes valid points, but not in a warm/fuzzy manner. Annie continues sulking. Business as usual. Annie is...sort of forced to admit that she, technically, did this to herself? Not sure if that's an improvement. I'm nervous about Wednesday's page. It could go either way, honestly: she could flare back up in anger and come to terms with the fact that her father has always prioritized his work and wife over her, which could lead to some catharsis. But she could also become angry at Ysengrin for calling her weak (not the best way to deal with an abuse victim, eh?) and reject yet another potential source of support. I want to trust that Ysengrin knows what he's doing (since he knew just what to say to her at the end of Chapter 31), but I'm having my doubts that this will improve anything... Best case scenario: breaking the Blinker Stone forces her to confront her anger/will/independence and embrace it as part of herself again. Or Annie becomes angry at Ysengrin, but this forces her to confront her anger in general?

Hmm. Yeah I don't see this going over too well, at least not in the short term.

I always saw the blinker stone as a focus for her powers, but perhaps it had become a limiter.

Man, where was Ysengrin when I was fifteen.

My only response is with more of a raised eyebrow surprise than shocked. I guess the fire will come whooshing back to her? Also, she had better learn how to do the blinker stone stuff without the blinker stone, and Ysengrin is right and Anja had said it too, it's supposed to be a training tool, a beginners item.

Sure, fair point Ysengrin. But that was kind of one of only a few remaining keepsakes Annie had of a friend, so like, couldn't you have locked it in a magical tree wolf pocket until she got her mojo back?

Next Page: Annie gets all pissed, reunites with her fire to kick Ysengrin's ass. Page after that is Ys going " Just according to keikaku!" and revealing that he didn't actually break the stone and is actually quite the stage magician. Alternative Next Page: Annie, with a baleful expression, summons the blinker stone again, fully intact.

I really hope the stone isn't gone for good. Maybe I'm just a sentimental fool, but it makes me sad to think Annie's only memento of Mort if gone for good.
Also, if Annie's anger/fire was being stored in the stone, then does it re anchor to Annie? OR is it a free entity for the time being?

Ysengrin, henceforth you shall be known as the destroyer of macguffins.
Mort will be saddened by this (was it mort who gave it to her? my memory is fuzzy on that)
Also Ysengrin is giving more advice, explosion in 3, 2, 1....

This portrayal of events is demonstratively false. I simply decline to accept that Ysengrin's shiny 'pop' could destroy any form of a rock.

And Andrew is watching attentively in panel 4. I think in two or three pages he will be acting as the ringkeeper to stop things getting out of control. Mort would not have wanted Annie to us the blinker stone in this manner. He would be glad that Ysengrin did what he just did.

I love this Rashomon-like storytelling. It is a different story when seen from different characters' perspectives. I find this amazing and I am riveted to the screen. If the world ended tomorrow, not seeing the resolution of Gunnerkrigg Court would be among my biggest regrets.

Ysengrin is into tough love. Personally I'd be pissed at what he just did, which is probably the point.

Mort will be saddened by this (was it mort who gave it to her? my memory is fuzzy on that) Muut asked Mort to deliver it. ETA: Of course the post that gets quoted is the one where I didn't catch the spelling error. *annoyed sigh*

I wonder if Andrew's abilities are going to play into how the next few pages will turn out. If the link to Fire is through that stone, and they're forced to merge back together or something right then and there because of it being broken, sounds like it could get a bit risky.

Ysengrin is actually quite the stage magician. The world always needs more wolves with top hats! Ten second edit: He pulled a rabbit out of his hat, everyone clapped, and Coyote immediately showed up and ate it.
Bunny-Boy looked appropriately horrified, of course - but more by an odd sense of déjà vu than the actual sight.

Well, so much for Jack burrowing it... A *pop* is not a *crack* however, he might have put it into a pocket dimension or hidden it somewhere in his tree-body-abomination-thing...
Didn't the forest kids already separate her from it when she took that math class with them?
But sure, let's put a powerful fire elemental, who is able to melt flesh off of bone at will as we were just reminded, back into touch with her considerable and for some time suppressed anger. In the middle of a forest. That is made of wood. While guarded by a guy in what amounts to wooden power armor. Great idea.

Well, Ysengrin's 'tough love' is sometimes indistinguishable from 'I would like to commit suicide by fire elemental'.

Scene: Fade-in to Antimony's Bedroom/Habitat The Anger Elemental wears a trench-coat. She looks at the photograph of Anthony Carver, an expression of anger and frustration on her face. A male announcer's voice: "All aboard!" Anger Elemental: Dons fedora and slings carry-bag over her shoulder. Turns back on camera. Transition: Iris Out on carry-bag. Scene: Pan fade Left in on Annan River Bridge, Wood side Gen. Ysengrin and Antimony Carver, Antimony looking up at Ysengrin in annoyance; in the background Smitty and Rabbit look on. Sound: a distant locomotive, getting closer Ysengrin: "What... What is that sound?" Smitty:"It's getting closer!" Sound: locomotive, onrushing cut to Closeup Antimony Antimony (terrified): "Ah... AH!...AAAAHHHHHHH!!!" (barely audible over locomotive) (tighten zoom to supercloseup) Fade to black

POP! "This child's toy" went POP!
One thing that strikes me about Ysengrin is how calm he appears in general. I suspect he is upset/ worried/ pissed off but his expression never changes.
Anyway... POP! Yes that was a gift from Mort. And Anja taught her some tricks with it. But really neither Mort nor Anja are experts on the Etherial. At least not as much as Ysengrin is. I have no idea what will happen next. Is the fire elemental free now? Will it appear as a free entity or will it go "woomf"! into Annie? Was Coyote totally aware what would happen if Ysengrin got close to Annie? (Hence he reminding her of her promise?)
Can I wait for Wednesday? Not really.

This portrayal of events is demonstratively false. I simply decline to accept that Ysengrin's shiny 'pop' could destroy any form of a rock. While I accept your right to canon-denial, trees *are* notoriously adept at breaking rocks. It would be great if she could recall it from powdery smithereens, but character development is needed and Ys is on a (log) roll. NO MORE TRAINING WHEELS FOR YOU! Precisely. So will Fire!Annie come rushing back like a rubberband? Looking forward to witnessing the "physics" of etheric rebound. It is elastic, right? I wouldn't expect a fire element to be brittle. (Could character development be considered plastic deformation? )
