So, the speculation IS true!Hmm. There is still more to be revealed Monday and beyond... ...but I'm tentatively assuming that Tony did NOT intend for his antenna to be pointing at Annie. Given how it looks in the middle of the page, that skeleton looks more and more like our dear friend Coyote. I'm feeling more and more sympathetic towards Tony now that we see the depths he's willing to go to in order to talk to Surma again, perhaps to apologize for how he has 'failed'. But this still doesn't explain how he was towards Annie beforehand, which to me seemed clearly hostile! I'm moving from angry to confused...

And all for naught, really.
I don't think he ever managed to reach Surma, and then he got gobwalloped by Zimmy for his trouble.
Sucks to be you, m80.

A surgeon being willing to give up his good hand to apologize to his wife.
Saying he only left his daughter alone because he was deep in the throes of guilt.
If this were the only impression we had of Tony, I'd want to give him a hug...

Who wants to bet that this antenna is somehow related to the arrow at the bottom of the Annan waters that trapped Jeanne?

Holy shit. I legit don't think he realized the full implications of what he was doing. From what it sounds like, Tony thought he was trying to pull back Surma from the afterlife, but his target was actually Annie, not some vague place in the aether like he thought.
Bone laser surgery was obviously not good for Annie's health. Tony may have killed her by mistake if Zimmy hadn't interfered.

I'm hoping we get a page where Don explains everything that's been happening with Antimony and Kat since she got there. I deeply want Tony to know everything we currently know.

I just want to point out that to a surgeon, their hands are everything, they are literarily necessary for the job and need to be of high dexterity.
Real world surgeons depend on their hands so much, they take out insurance policies on them.
That's because if something happens, you're done for. Your entire professional career is over.
Tony isn't giving up just his arm, he's giving up his entire profession and future. All just to try and contact Surma.
Whoever is telling him to do this is screwed up.

Annie needed to know that her father is human, and Tony needs to know that his daughter has not done totally well in his absence. Daedalus: Kat's concern that Annie always makes excuses for her father not being around was taken seriously, and I'm hoping that it's not going to be presented as unjustified.

While I'm not willing to go so far as to say Rotting-Pig-Bro Psychopomp is somehow Coyote in disguise, I am rather curious just whose dead Rotting-Pig-Bro is in charge of taking to the Ether.

I'm not sure anybody knows what really happened inside Annie's head, other than Zimmy and Gamma. Though, Donny might tell Tony about the coma and thus there for timing.

Oh God! I didn't believe that he would do anything this desperate for what is really so little gain. I thought from the start that he would end up more an object of pity than of hate. I didn't think that it would be this pitiful. I don't think that that figure on the page is Coyote. That is an ungulate's dentition and on the previous page we saw an ungulate's hoof. Coyote is capable of taking such a form but it is not what he would usually do.

I mean I think a person should do go od simply for it's own sake. Edit: Adding the underlined letters, because well, I'm an idiot.

if that Deer spirit really is Coyote in disguise, then why did he encourage Tony to contact the fire spirit within Annie? What is Coyote's game regarding Annie?

edzepp, psybershadow, et al: What we need right now is a good heart-to-heart among all of the characters, where everyone explains their motivations and justifications. But we're not going to get that, because then there wouldn't be conflict nor a story. So the best we can reasonably hope for is somewhere in the realm of: - Donny debriefs Tony on what's happened since he was gone. - Tony has moment of horror when he realizes he almost killed his daughter. - Tony and Annie start to heal their relationship. Talking about Surma? - Tony tells Annie his reasons that he's given here*. - Tony and Kat have some kind of talk (possible with shouting). - Tony gives his reasons and Kat calls him out on the fact that it still doesn't excuse cutting off contact completely, nor how he treated Annie upon returning. - ? *Yes, she can hear them, but Tony doesn't know that yet, so it's a mark of trust if he tells her of his own free will.

"I never wanted to involve my daughter in this endeavor that lead directly to giving her etheric surgery, which made her nearly comatose for an undetermined amount of time." Either Anthony is a consummate liar, an inconsistent justification-spouting manipulator, or he was messing around in something he couldn't even begin to understand.
... A testament to Tom's writing, I feel willing to believe all of them.

Don't forget about the amount of surveillance in the court. We've seen tons of marks of it. Annie would probably have to visit Tony's place.

I mean I think a person should do go simply for it's own sake. It's not noble, per se, but I still feel echoes of high tragedy. And I feel bad for him on an emotional level. His motives are mixed, of course. He's guilty for failing his wife and "letting her die", and wishes to atone to some degree. That's somewhere on the spectrum between selfish and selfless, but not at either end. *special shrug reserved for shades-of-gray situations*

Well there's the bone lasers... And as many of us guessed, the events in divine were Tony's attempts to contact Surma, not Annie, but the Fire was the only thing of Surma left.
I still think Tony's antagonism towards Annie comes from Zimmy saying she was from his little girl when she punched him, meaning Tony thinks it was Annie actively stopping him from contacting his wife through some etheric means. Would also explain why he is trying to cut off all her contact with the forest and etheric beings like Renard.
I don't know how this chapter ends, but I really hope Donny tells Tony he is being a massive jerk at some point, and at least tells him that he needs to speak to Annie properly.

Anthony's on his third or fourth whisky of the night here, and at most a couple hours has gone by. Just saying. But some of the things he's confessing live at the bottom of the third drink at least.
There are some amazing specific examples of gentle and sweet and positive love in this comic. The Donlans, Kat and Paz, George and Andrew, Willie and Janet, John and Margo, Jack and Jenny, Bud and Lindsey, Kamlen and Irial, and the friendships of Robot and Shadow, Kat and Antimony, Jones and James, Mort and Antimony, Red and Blue, Anthony and Donald, even Zimmy and Gamma. But there are also so many examples of destructive and disastrous and mismanaged love. Diego toward Jeanne, obviously. Arguably Jeanne and her elf. Anthony and Surma. Reynard and Surma. Coyote and Ysengrin. The ship toward Lindsey. Hetty and the dead sister. Jack toward Zimmy. Anthony and Antimony.
The positive examples far outweigh the negative ones both numerically and in importance. But I think it's fair to say that "love can make people do terrible things" is the major theme that led up to this particular chapter.

Seems like Tony's right hand *is* Annie's business.
I feel somewhat uneasy that so many mysteries surrounding Tony are being unmysteryfied so quickly. Is Tom wrapping the story up?

I tend to find that his fault was unwilling to believe he could be unable to fail and well not using this tragedy as a learning experience.

I wonder if the bone fingers, which we now may assume was the antenna, when Annie was comatose was actually Tony reaching out to the fire elemental which may lead to the question of whether Surma is influencing Annie in some roundabout way.
Me thinks Coyote be involved in this, that guide does not give off the usual feel.
Speaking of Coyote, I started to read Sandra and Woo today and discovered the cameos.
Back on track I really don't know what to feel about tony anymore.
