This seems like a good sign. She's in the forest and she's talking to *someone*. That's a very good start, it's not as bad as we feared.
I hope that Annie's relationship with her father does not become analogous to Ysengrin's relationship with Coyote.

Also, note how the forest part is subtly framed with rounded corners. Tom's attention to detail is excellent as always.

I mean jeez Ysengrin, you could do a lot better.
Coyote may be a god and all, but just look at toll everything's taking on your body, to say nothing of your mental health. Guy's completely toxic.

Oh yes! Do take advice from a brainwashed abused wolf that has been spiralling downwards physicaly and mentaly for aeons. [well not aeons but it scans better] Seriously now... Stand up for yourself Annie. Be yourself. >:[

Definitely a flashback from the Summer just past. Around the time of 'Totem' (possibly just before?). Note the straight edges at the base of the flashback? It's not over.

Y is having a quiet sane talk with Annie. Yes, this was some time in the past so we might just get some background on what is going on.

Hmm, interesting comparison, Ysengrin controlled by his forest master Coyote, Annie controlled by her father Tony. I wonder if we'll get an insight into Ysengrin's advice on how to deal with this sort of thing, and see whether Annie is copying him, or purposefully doing something different to manipulate her father back.

Yeah...that is interesting. Annie's relationship with her father is being compared to Ysengrin's relationship with Coyote. Coyote, who abuses him and unbeknownst to him is eating his very memories. The narrative itself has basically just confirmed for anyone still unsure that Anthony is toxic for Annie, the same way Coyote is for Ysengrin. That aside I'm amazed something was actually able to stop the fire elemental.

How did I miss that? *smacks forehead* We sometimes see what we want to see instead of what is there. In the first panel I saw the Fire Elemental scorching Anthony's remaining hand, but then I realized it was just me. Q: How have his memories of hating Coyote evaded 'safekeeping'?) A: Hate is a form of attention and Coyote likes attention. That's my rationalization and I am sticking to it.

Today's comic is like groundhog day. The rage elemental has popped up, seen a shadow, and retreated. This signifies that the updates will consist of six more months of Anthony.

I think Fire Lady remembering this shows that she is Annie, and not a separate entity. At least, not entirely. Half (or most of) Annie, at any rate. I wonder if the two halves are connected in any way.
Who would have thought? Coyote and Anthony have something in common. Coyote may be far more likeable, but he is still a sadistic nutcase. Anthony is probably none of those, but he is thoroughly abusing the power he has over someone. I'd root for Ysengrin to punch Coyote's lights out, but I'm afraid the poor wolfie would just get squashed for his pains. Annie, on the other hand is likely stronger than her father and can defend herself once she breaks free of the mental shackles he's got on her (figurative ones!). Come on, Annie! Let hate win!!!

Well, some people in this thread are wanting Fire Annie to stick with the hate and burn Anthony. How soon we forget that last page is not something we want unbound and marauding if we value lives. I, too, want Annie to confront Tony, but not until she is at least literally whole once more.
This was probably the best possible development. Fire Annie is not a monster; she has perhaps the full spectrum of emotions. She is complex, which means Body Annie is as well.
What an emotional roller coaster this chapter has been already.

A fascinating comparison. I never thought of an analogy between Annie/Anthony and Ysengrin/Coyote. Coyote "seems" to eat Y's maddening memories (whether that is true or not...), but the act and results are shockingly inhumane. One could easily make the case, that Anthony quest to expel the Fire Elemental (whether that is true or not...) is equally disturbing.
The connection between Yesengrin and Annie seems far more profound to me, now.

Also, note how the forest part is subtly framed with rounded corners. Tom's attention to detail is excellent as always. It's for this reason that Panel 6 is one of my favorite ever. We still have weakened Ys, though not as pronounced because he's not trying to have Annie for chow, and more amazingly, his tree body is in the background, with Ys' cloak working as part of the trunk. I love that tree. This seriously may be one of my favorite Tom drawings.

Stand up for yourself Annie. Be yourself. >:[ Seriously. I love Ysengrin but Coyote and his relationship is toxic beyond all belief. That of all the interactions between others she's seen Ysengrin and Coyote is the one she chooses to take to parallel her and her father's interactions is sad. She herself has noted and protested the abusiveness in Coyote and Ysengrin's interactions. Hopefully, this is an epiphany that she needs to get away from Tony, and not something else. I hope she shares the revalation with her material self.

You can still love him but don't let him drag you down. Ysengrin is your warning to keep your distance. I'm glad at least that Fire Annie has calmed down.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-L6rEm0rnYAh, deep, justified anger tempered by deep, unconditional love. The things it does to a person. Fire Annie's face seems to relax as she remembers that encounter with Ys. The lines are almost all gone from her face. I wonder if she made the connection to her relationship with her father when they were talking, or if she is just now recognizing the parallels. When she was talking with Ys it had been years since she'd seen Tony, and she'd had the chance to grow and learn in a much freer environment. It would be easy for a young child, as Annie was when she entered the court, to idealize an abusive parent and gloss over the most painful memories in favor of the good ones, during a long separation. The shock of recognizing the difference between the story she's been telling herself about her father and her relationship with him vs. how he is treating her, and probably treated her in the past, from an older, more nuanced perspective is likely contributing to her feelings of distress and dissociation. I suspect Annie has a lot of unresolved emotions hidden away in her fire elemental half that Stepford Fleshling Annie really just doesn't want to deal with.

that title sounds dirty
... anyway, still don't really know what the elemental exactly is, but this page makes it seem like it really is a part of Annie, and not just a separate being. at least that's how it feels to me. (because of the flashback memory time)
