It is her thing.
A very happy page 1500, to everyone but Annie! At least we aren't sucker punched again here*. Have we reached the point where it can only go uphill? *Though it is tragic to see Annie in denial about her father's actions. She can't have the long-awaited assertive moment until she realizes that what he's doing is wrong.

Annie's attempt at stopping Kat before she goes off on further conjecture leads me to believe Annie chose this new hairstyle for herself.
To that I say: Tony, did you get a lobotomy for your daughter, too?

So, how much further can Tony go at this point?

As with the reveal of Jenny, this almost feels like a mild poking at the reactions of pretty much everybody over the course of the chapter.
In any case, if Annie's interrupted speech was meant to say her father didn't make her cut it, that's just awful.

So, how much further can Tony go at this point? Do we want to know? If she chose this for herself... bleh. I don't want to say she's broken yet. If somehow she gets in contact with Coyote and THEN turns away... Which makes me wonder where Coyote's Tooth (the dagger) went...

Kat: "You've changed and I don't like it!"
(Problems with Tony is reasonable, the "you're supposed to have long hair" make me smile.)

We're not sure whether Annie's trying to say her father didn't make her change her hair + outfit, or if she's trying to say he didn't humiliate her in the sixth panel. And in the second she seems to be trying to say he's not mean to her. Annie's mask is pretty strongly up until the last panel.

I notice it's still ambiguous whether Annie's hair cut was her idea or Tony's. Wonder how long that'll last, or if we'll ever know for sure?
And man, considering Kat's parents, no wonder she's freaking out. The Donlans seem very functional and loving, towards each other and towards Kat. So a parent being less than supportive and sweet tempered must really be hitting Kat hard and really pissing her off on Annie's account.

Kat: "You've changed and I don't like it!" (Problems with Tony is reasonable, the "you're supposed to have long hair" make me smile.) I can cut her some slack for it. This is probably about as much (if not more) of an emotional beat down for Kat as for us.

Kat: "You've changed and I don't like it!" (Problems with Tony is reasonable, the "you're supposed to have long hair" make me smile.) I can see why she reacts like that. Annie obviously liked her long hair. While in the forest, she let it grow nearly to the ground. You don't cut your hair just like that after years of growing it.

My first thought was that re-exposure to her father is causing Annie to habitually adopt the styles she was using when she last saw him. That, and that cutting her hair could be something like the classing cutting of the hair in Japanese(?) culture to show honor lost, as she is probably feeling like she's a pretty awful person right about now.

This remind me of an early page where Kat cried on Annie's behalf and Annie remained relatively stoic. On topic: the end of the last chapter indicated that Annie and Kat were drifting apart, and in this chapter this seems to blossom into factual reality. I therefore believe this repeating of year 9 will actually happen. Which makes me sad. Separating Annie and Kat; how could you, comic?

Yes, people tend to comment on physical changes. It's the "you're supposed to be THIS way" that got me smiling. I remember going through that age and being the person that heard that. So chill. It's not like I now think less of Kat because she's acting like a teen/human.

"Your hair! It goes down!"
Kat does appear to be at a loss on this page. What's more, she didn't hear how the conversation went after the bit about repeating year 9 (moving out, transferring control of Rey) so she's got a couple more shocks coming.
Hmm. Is this where *Kat* starts to be deconstructed?

Kat: "Of course your dad is mean, Annie. I've been arguing about it online, all day. Paz even wrote some fanfiction about it... Though in her story, you end up marrying Hetty at the end. But that's not really the point, now is it?" Annie: "... Who's Hetty?..."

Chancellor, whew, good. As far as Tom, hey, we had a whole chapter about haircuts, so the way Kat is reacting is totally in line with that!

Annie's attempt at stopping Kat before she goes off on further conjecture leads me to believe Annie chose this new hairstyle for herself. It does sorta-kinda look that way, but reading it again it looks like she's only denying that her dad was mean to her and tried to humiliate her. I'm pretty darn sure he did do those things, but they're subjective, at least. And if she did choose this new (well, old) look for herself... I'd say that's more depressing than the alternative, since it means her dad got through to her very effectively. But at least Kat is starting to fight back against all this.

Aww, c'mon Kat - for a while, long hair was your thing, too.
*sigh* - sorting out what is Annie's decision versus her father's is going to be somewhat difficult for a while, isn't it.
You mean the way the Court and Forest drifted apart? It's been implied in several spots that Annie and Kat just cannot understand certain parts of each other - there are aspects of each that are just fundamentally inaccessible to the other. But though they are different, I think that it is only because they complement each other that they might have a shot at getting to the bottom of the mysteries they've uncovered and the schemes set in motion around them. I hope they manage to be friends for a long time, even if they do end up fighting here.
Annie's worn this style of dress before in the Court, in chapter 15 (congrats to quark for figuring this out).
