Paz is back too.I wonder what Kat will think of the Court's body growing lab. It's not entirely unrelated to her own work.

Well then, seems like everyone's sharing dorms now! Also, Paz's face in Panel 3 is just plain hilarious looking.

And if Paz is rooming with Margo, that indicates that two-person to a room is more common this year. While Tom hasn't said so directly, it seems clear that Annie and Kat are indeed sharing this flat.

Not that the others weren't roomy in their own ways, but this so far looks like the first set of dorms designed to house actual adults. It looks nice. You could have a sitcom in that place.
Also... I swear I've seen Kat's shirt before.

If anyone was wondering about Tom's comment, Mr Heckles was Rachel/Monica's downstairs neighbor in Friends. He was a weird crotchety old dude who was obsessed with Rachel.
Paz and Margo are going to be haunted by him.

Aw, Paz, just stopping all of the speculation of the living arrangements after no more than one comic? Rude. If anyone was wondering about Tom's comment, Mr Heckles was Rachel/Monica's downstairs neighbor in Friends. He was a weird crotchety old dude who was obsessed with Rachel. I only remember the episode where he died, and he left all his stuff to them.

This page is full of all kinds of adorable.
Feels kind of weird being back in a normal dorm after water world.

Yep, but I think I detect a hint of jealousy here. I suspect that the blush has more to do with suspicion that she might have interrupted something.

Those blush lines under Annie have always been there this chapter. Even two pages ago she had them.
I am more inclined to think that Annie simply has no idea what happened while she was out. Makes more logical sense, given her social daftness at times.

Kat's standing still at the back of the couch, almost as if she's guarding it, and awkwardly fails to answer the question Annie asks. Paz has a suspiciously delayed reaction revealing herself from behind the back of the couch. Almost like she needed to do something before she wanted to be seen by anyone but Kat.
WHAT COULD IT MEAN?

I wonder if the court is improving the living arrangements for all it's students (the early stuff was a little too Wayside School for my taste), or if you just get nicer accommodations as you go up in grade-level, moving from "leaky military bunker" to "penthouse condo".

Maybe, the penthouse is on the 19th floor.

Considering how big and empty it is, it's probably the latter, in a way, the students' accommodations changing as they age to match their and the Court's needs for each year. Maybe the more "normal" housing is to get them slowly used to the idea of living outside the Court, again? And if Paz is rooming with Margo, that indicates that two-person to a room is more common this year. Alternately the room arrangements could still be based on choice, but Paz asked to room with Margo because she got the room closest to Kat.

I feel like the look of the court has been moving away from huge, empty, dark, and old, towards sleek, modern, and sterile. Not sure how I feel about it. Also the layout of the flat looks nigh identical to Rachel and Monica's apartment from Friends. Note in particular the size and shape of the kitchen, the small round dining table, and the large leaning window (!) The more you look at it, the more details you notice. Further confirmed by Tom mentioning Mr. Heckles, as Eversist has noted. Unusual... can't think of another case of a major pop-culture reference in the comic. Edit: in fact, compare this picture of the main apartment building from Friends and compare to panel 2 of the previous page. I'm calling it: gratuitous Friends reference.

And Kat immediately notes that "She just got here!". Sure she did, Kat, suuure. On a more serious, though possibly less significant note, I'm wondering what the design on the front of Kat's shirt is meant to be. It looks like a chain, with the central link snapping at the bottom - or possibly a stylised logo for something called OQO. Edit: I thought "OQO" was a nonsense word or something, but it turns out that there actually was a company called OQO, and their logo is nigh-identical to the on on Kat's shirt: It was apparently notable for making powerful handheld computers, but honestly I have no idea why Kat would be wearing their logo, beyond her precocious programming and engineering skills.

Actually, surprised nobody's noted this yet, but- What was Annie going to say? Is she questioning the court? That's sort of what it sounds like to me.

Yep, but I think I detect a hint of jealousy here. I detect a hint of something, not sure what. However, by the look of her eyes and the set of her mouth, it definitely is not " Oh My God I am so delighted to see Paz here". @jelly Jellybean, that is my favorite wildspec of the chapter so far.

However, by the look of her eyes and the set of her mouth, it definitely is not " Oh My God I am so delighted to see Paz here". Here's my interpretation of that peculiar something: "Oh no, I grew so used to spending the days with my best friend, whom I can open up to and talk to comfortably. But now her girlfriend has arrived, and while I do think she's nice, I cannont open up to her as easily. Furthermore, now I feel like the third wheel again, which is unpleasant. And whenever I feel uncomfortable, it shows on my face."

Are folk reading a little too much into Annie's poker face expression? Annie hasn't shown much objection to Paz in the past. I think it's nothing more than Annie's chain of thought being interrupted. The *real* unanswered question in this tableau is: where's Rey staying? (That, and 'Will we get to see more of Margo?')

Heck, Paz did flat-out interrupt her just then. Even so I'm not really seeing any apprehensive or negative expressions, she just looks kind of blank (maybe a bit of surprise).. Also we know how well Tom draws profiles *Pokes head in* Actually, surprised nobody's noted this yet, but- What was Annie going to say? Is she questioning the court? That's sort of what it sounds like to me. Annie seems to have been somewhat uneasy about and/or suspicious of the court since pretty early on, and Kat as well especially since Sky Watcher. Come to think of it, Paz too - she even deals with the scientists on a regular basis. Wild guess here, but the whole artificially mass-produced mindless children thing probably doesn't help their case much.

I'm thinking Annie's just voicing her amazement, if anything. It's not every day you pop in to the Court and see their inner workings involves vat-grown students. I'd at least think it was conversation-worthy, and Annie's been aching to voice her opinion for some time.

I suspect that the blush has more to do with suspicion that she might have interrupted something. "She just got here!" ...and now, a word from guestbook: HondaCivet I am suspicious as to why Paz was hiding on the couch and why it took her so long to announce her presence. 4 Mar 2015 | 9:12 AM
Razor Paz, dear, you're cute as a button, but you interrupted Annie and goodness knows we won't find out what she was about to say for ages. 4 Mar 2015 | 9:30 AM
Andrew Drake Annie, your timing is impeccable. You've managed to arrive either shortly before or after events that would have been uncomfortable to walk in on. Although, we would have been able to claim that Kat took after her parents if they got walked in on. 4 Mar 2015 | 3:42 PM
SomeCallMeTim Speaking as someone it happened to (twice), it's a real pain when your roomie decides to carry on a steamy relationship in your space. The friendships survived - barely - but I wouldn't wish it on anyone. 5 Mar 2015 | 8:16 AM
