That's ominous.
How in the Nine Hells would the Court permit Coyote to design a ritual they use? Because no one else could? He's a trickster god, so I wonder what is about to go wrong here...

It's a simple ritual. Even fire head girl could do it.

Anja said explicitly that the Court would not allow devices that "could not be fully explained". www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=520So I think there is a little inconsistency here.

Anja said explicitly that the Court would not allow devices that "could not be fully explained". Pah, propaganda for the common researcher. Besides, the etheric computer wasn't dismantled for parts or banned or anything. I guess Anja just didn't get the props she rightly deserved. The Court did not allow her to publish her results, or something And I think the Court would allow anything and everything if it served the Court's purpose. Although what that purpose is in this particular case (the whole... cultural exchange thingy), I have no idea.

What makes you say it can't be fully explained? All they said was "Coyote taught them how to do it". That's a far cry from "this can't be explained!" He might've taught them, and they've learned ENOUGH about the details they're satisfied. They don't have to stumble on every soul-converting discovery by themselves, you know. As long as it's explained in the end...

The ritual is only in use for two generations. That's unexpected. Unless snakedude is older than he looks, or his teacher lived a long time. Something is really weird about all this. Weirder than usual, I mean. .. And that is weird.

Anja said explicitly that the Court would not allow devices that "could not be fully explained". www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=520So I think there is a little inconsistency here. I think the key word here is "devices". Rituals and other magical things are tolerated in the Court, even if none of it at times can be rationalized in a way other than "it's magic". But if you rely on machines which tap into the ether, then you cross into a no-no zone, because machines, which are perfectly logical constructions in most all cases, should not rely on something that is purely illogical, like magic, to properly function. The only exception I can think of is the Etheric Research Station, which is designed specifically to figure out just what the Ether itself is.

Sanke is pretty tall, and long, and maybe stretchy. Previous panels suggested the height differences, but panel 2 on this page seals it. I'm guessing about 7 foot tall.

How in the Nine Hells would the Court permit Coyote to design a ritual they use? Because no one else could? He's a trickster god, so I wonder what is about to go wrong here... Well, it's worked fine for them, so far, with entire generations of former Forest denizens living in the Court. Not everything that comes from the Coyote is fruit from a poisoned tree; if everything he gave had a hidden trick, it wouldn't be a surprise, any more. But that's not what Anja says, at all. They just don't like it, but they clearly haven't interfered with Anja's use of it. They're pragmatic enough not to interfere with something that works, apparently. And besides, maybe they can, or think they can, explain how this particular ritual works? Anyways, the second panel is hilarious. Looks like Annie overestimated her reach.

Hmm! Could that teacher have been Anja?
Thinking about this careful gender balancing and sourcing, it just occurred to me that Foley students represent a reversal in stereotypical attitudes (larrikin fairy girls and demure creature boys*)
* I did say stereotypical.

We need guesses as to the nature of this 'ritual'.
Part of me worries it's just jamming the totems haphazardly into the bodies. Or ritualistically throwing a switch (or other mundane thing).

So I think there is a little inconsistency here. I don't necessarily see a problem here, considering how the court seems to treat the forest transfer students. As in, they're just dumped into a class without really getting the attention they should be getting. There seems to be done fairly little to help them with their transition to being human. To me that's about on par with treating them as "useless", since their origin can't be properly explained by scientific means.

This ritual is really exciting, it is like "Invasion of Body Snatchers" or "The Stepford Wives", a chance to improve people... All we need now is an "executive order 66" and finally the entire world can be purged of the fossils in charge, and the new age under the Peace and Love of Coyote can begin.

"Seen as useless" =/= "not allowed". Yes indeed. It's not as if the Court didn't allow Anja's computer, pendant, and tattoos. They may think of them as useless, but they allow them. I'm wondering if having transfers like this is of long standing or not. If it is older than our tall friend and his/her predecessor (the one who learned the ritual from Coyote), then who, or what, performed it before either of them?
Also, who in the court would have been given the opportunity to learn a ritual from Coyote in the first place? I had the impression that was the medium's sole province. Maybe Surma trained the new guy before going off to have a baby.

I figure if Coyote says something along the lines of "This is a ritual that will put the life of these animals/fairies into these empty bodies" then the Court has no reason not to believe him. They know Coyote never lies, and you can bet that whoever was the first to receive their new body probably didn't get a moment away from the Court's attention.

There must be an interesting history behind this odd procedure. Perhaps, hearing it will answer many questions (No matter who's involved).
I suppose I should accept that, Coyote and the Court may want to help a young entity to fulfill its full potential. However, a part of me is still looking for an angle from either side, or both sides. Maybe, it's to mess with the other's head. Just keep wondering, "Why? What are they gaining?"

Wait, that's an unfortunate name for a human male. How about "Horny, as in the horns? Oh bu&&€~, this is really going downhill fast. Maybe that's why the Foley students aren't allowed to name each other!

… oh, hang on, we shouldn't name them yet, right? (The Foley boys were as eager as the girls for Annie to name them.) Nah, should be fine since there's a fine difference between naming them and giving them a name. So name Mr. Earsworth Whiskerbottom whatever you like, just so long as he doesn't find out about it until the proper time!

Calling it now, person who passed the ritual to the Lizard-lady was no other than Surma. It only makes sense, her being the court medium and knowing Coyote. Maybe Surma was even involved in transformation ritual of the Lizard-lady. E: Missed goldenknots post I still hold dips to Surma being involved in transformation ritual though

Y'know, not all of Coyote's jokes have to be large, far-reaching, ominous Xanatos Gambits. Given how prim and proper and rational Gunnerkrigg Court is, I can't help but imagine him laughing his fool head off any time he hears what mischief the Foley students are getting up to, with their tenuous understanding of (and often, instinctive contempt for) normal human sensibilities.

BUT...did he say "This ritual will put life into these empty bodies, but have no other purpose or side effect that could possibly cause any type of problem for the Court in the present or future"? I certainly doubt it. For example, he could totally be pulling a Manchurian Candidate - making former animals controllable in the future, or somesuch.

For example, he could totally be pulling a Manchurian Candidate - making former animals controllable in the future, or somesuch. That would be contrary to everything we've learned about the Coyote so far. He isn't some evil overlord scheming to take over or destroy the Court, but a trickster who enjoys poking at people into unexpected directions and seeing how they react. He's never shown interest in controlling others, but sowing chaos and mischief. And he's never shown doing more than bare minimum to keep the whole business interesting for himself. And anyway, since Coyote is the one who gets the spirit totems off the original bodies of their owners, why would he need to manipulate a completely different stage of the procedure if he wanted to insert his own mischief in there, somewhere?

I was thinking, it had something to do with Coyote keeping the Jackalope body. Just as he turned her aiua into a totem, who's to say he doesn't turn their bodies into looking glasses. He could use the connection to their former bodies, as a way to remote view into the Court across the the Annan Waters. The Foley students wouldn't know it, so no one would act more weird than usual, and no one would turn against the Court more than usual. Nothing for the Court to notice from the first student to Bugs. Just a guess, but if there's an interpretation of "totem" that means "to watch", I'd bet on it.
