Matt was preoccupied with Chang'e and Paz realized she had other attractions. It looks like Matt and Becky may developing a background relationship! It looks like Matt and Becky in panel three of Page 1393. And dancing behind Paz on Page 1395. I don't recall seeing them any other times in Chapter 49. EDIT: Except maybe that is Becky on Page 1388.

According to the legend, when she lost her ability to dance and was banished to moon with rabbit as companion, she not only lost her dancing, but her voice too.The rabbit was supposed to carry the messages. There is a book about her somewhere.I'll find out more and inform you.

According to legend, perhaps. But according to Gunnerkrigg Court, things are obviously a bit different from the legend.

Also on that topic Agni was a fire god in hindu(psychopomp)as well as Neith(goddess of hunt). So goddess of moon(chang'e)must be a psychopomp too. What do you guys think?

I've sometimes thought that Paz's response to Matt's story would have worked better if we'd seen more signs in earlier chapters that she had a crush on him.

Paz and Matt were socializing during the Residential camping trip on Page 621. Not much of a sign, but I remembered it when I read Faraway Morning.

It's always seemed that necros of old threads are preferable to new ones.

Look at Kat's face. She looks at them too, perhaps one of hints to Kat being attracted to Paz? Personally I thought Kat was just talking with Willsbury. But Paz was just talking with Matt and... The flashback panel on Page 1290 took place during Year 8, the same year as the Residential camping trip. I don't recall anything that indicates whether that late night confession was before or after the camping trip. I don't think Kat was consciously thinking about Paz at the campfire, but who knows what lurks in the subconscious mind of a 13-year old girl destined for some kind of divine ascension.

And in hindsight, Annie is the alien-human hybrid and the Court is the international government...

Not necessarily; Coyote isn't a psychopomp, so there are non-psychopomp gods running around the GKCverse. I would also point out that all gods we have seen in GKCverse are either creator gods or psychopomps. Coyote is a bit weird because he isn't a principle creator god in his source mythology, but he did engage in some creation acts and his role in GKC seems to be primarily creation centered. So I'm not too sure what to make of other gods because the only two clearly mythological activities we have seen so far are "creation" (in a very vague sense) and psychopompery. Odin is also (off-screen) canon but we haven't gotten much in the way of confirmation on his god/legend status. Considering Brynhildr was "just" another student, I am leaning more towards Chang'e being "just" a student.

Considering Brynhildr was "just" another student, I am leaning more towards Chang'e being "just" a student. I believe that Ysengrin and Renard have both been referenced as the equivalent of minor gods in the past (in-universe, that is; in our world they're just trickster heroes). Regardless, gods in GKC are 'just' etheric beings of extreme power. They don't necessarily belong to neat categories like "creator" of "psychopomp" And although Brynhildr was definitely supernatural and from Norse mythology, she's not really a mythological goddess in the same sense as Coyote or Chang'e. I'm not sure where that places her, but my personal opinion is that Chang'e is the equivalent of a guest lecturer (possibly there at the Court to complain about Coyote's meddling with the geography of her home*). *speaking of which, it's always bothered me that Coyote marked the moon in a way that is permanent and visible to the whole world. He's certainly not subtle, and there are other etheric beings of equal power, so why does the GKCverse (beyond the Court) not see large and splashy reality alterations often? I assume it doesn't because the pages with Chang'e indicate that the source of the Moon's new patters are not determined by the outside world.

Annie poked the moon and marked it with her fingerprint, Coyote just enabled / tricked her into doing it. If other gods get upset over it, then literally his fingerprints aren't on it. EDIT: Thanks to 2001: A Space Odyssey, I always hear the music Also Sprach Zarathustra whenever I see Annie looking over the moon on that page.

I'm kind of talking about the opposite point - presumably there are not many visible and splashy actions taken by gods in the Gunnerverse, or at least not enough that the people outside of the Court have noticed something strange is going on. Why is that? Coyote's shown he already cares nothing for subtlety, so there's nothing to stop him from affecting the world outside of the Court, and there are other gods around with Coyote's level of power.

Why is that? Coyote's shown he already cares nothing for subtlety, so there's nothing to stop him from affecting the world outside of the Court, and there are other gods around with Coyote's level of power. Well I can think of three, no four, possibilities: 1. The gods usually choose to be subtle because a truce designed to keep them from destroying themselves, their followers, and the world. Coyote departed from the truce because Annie would take the blame. 2. The gods usually have to be subtle because they aren't getting the same level of power from the current crop of more scientifically oriented followers. Either the forest at GKC gives Coyote an unusual amount of power, or Coyote choose to expend an unusual amount of power to woo Annie. 3. The gods try to be subtle to keep followers (and readers) from focusing on obvious examples of divine intervention which would lead to them no longer thinking for themselves. 4. People believe what they want to believe. The astronomers at the GKC conference believe that the moon print was caused by solar winds. Maybe there are plenty of other examples of divine intervention, but people choose to believe there are rationale explanations for them and don't dwell on them. I would put my money on the last possibility. It links in with the idea that people's beliefs make things real. Or in this case, their lack of belief makes things irrelevant.
