I imagine most of you are aware of this, but yeah. Tom posted the first part of his comic retrospective that he was talking about doing due to his Patreon. I'm pretty excited. |

So, my own surprises and thoughts from Tom's commentary:
1) Tom wishes he hadn't used stuck up teacher #6 at all. I wonder who he wishes he had put there instead?
2) I really had a hard time accepting, at first, how much Tom just jumped in given how methodical we've seen him be for years. However, I think his assertion about the stuck up teacher #6 does support this.
3) I've been mentally misreading the name of the woods since I started reading the comic. I've been pronouncing it "Jill-ette" (like the razor blade company). This is also what happened to me when JK Rowling had Victor Krum phonetically say Hermione's name in Goblet of Fire. Man I was so surprised!
I hope that we should be creating a numbering system to go along with this...

Fairly sure I heard once he lives/lived in Birmingham. Though, I had a teacher from there, and he was quick to point out that his particular dialect was not Birmingham.

However, his "class", "Annan" and "waters" pronunciations sound northern to me, could be very mild Yorkshire or Manchester. A person local to northern or middle England ought to be able to better locate the accent. I'm currently looking through YouTube's "Accent TAG" videos for a closer match, the variety out there is quite interesting. Now, I was brought up to speak British English received pronunciation (neutral to me but "posh" to others!) and I can generally distinguish various British accents, but only if they are rather pronounced. |

To me Tom sounds a lot like Mike Oldfield, who according to Wikipedia was born in Berkshire and then moved to London... so that could be entirely coincidental.
Also I don't suppose it's weird at all to Tom that fans are discussing his voice in the forum.

Well, Tom did live in Birmingham, I dunno if he was raised there or not. So, maybe that? You are right, though, that the accent is almost unnoticeable, until he said the words you point out. |

As a fellow brit, toms accent seems relatively neutral with maybe a bit of west country twang on he odd word. People have said he's from Birmingham, but I couldn't detect any brummie In there (brummie is the strong Birmingham accent). and yes, tenant has very strong Scottish accent, but uses an English accent from Essex in Dr who.
I liked the first video, but hope be will go into more detail in future ones. this was the first strip though so I guess there wasn't that much to explain just yet. I'm glad I was getting the o pronunciation right, although was putting the emphasis on the wrong syllable in annan. That jerk he wishes he hadn't used, I'm assuming its just because it would have been more interesting to use a character who could reccur rather than a generic guard with a different art style to him.
I'll be interested when he gets to a treatise too, will he explain the symbolism or just leave it to us?

I am pretty excited by this inside look at the creation of Gunnerkrigg by Tom. I don't know how often he plans to come out with new chapter discussions, but I am looking forward to Chapter 2 so we can hear his thoughts on Kat. Also the development of his artwork, which really had a chance to shine by showcasing different styles of drawing. (as well as the mystery paintings subplot that he later decided to drop). |

I am sure we will find a lot of things Tom has in the comic that he wishes he had done differently. Which is cool with this new explanatory series, we hear why, such as he was experimenting with the story. As to the Jerk, Tom may not like him, the story still required a staff member for her to communicate with. How can we know Shadow is elusive unless Annie tries to show someone? So it was a balancing act between that and leaving the chapter with no other human in it. The place does look pretty lonely. And Philman, the treatises! That hadn't even occurred to me! He did take a bit to explain the Bonus page for Chapter one, so we can hope he will say something about them when their turn comes around. PS, Keef, I love your current avatar! |

I've been mis-pronouncing Paz's name the whole time. I had to run the video back because I wasn't sure if I'd misheard what he said or not. And I'm not sure how I feel about this. Primarily, I am concerned about the effect this new information has on the pronunciations of "KatPaz" and "PazKat". EDIT: Egad, and I just realized that this means I have to re-read the entire archive yet again just so I can read it with the correct pronunciation all the way through! Yes, the entire archive! |

I knew how to pronounce it, but i just prefer a hard Z at the end. I never really was fond of Spanish even though i'm Mexican.

I think I've sorted out my feelings on the matter, and ultimately I prefer the hard Z pronunciation. "Paz" - to my American English ear, anyway - sounds like a pretty cool and awesome name while "Path" sounds like a name given by a hippie parent, similar to Sunshine and Rainbow and Moon Unit. Though I suppose the fact that it means "Peace" in Spanish makes that rather appropriate.

It should be neither 'path' nor 'pazz' (rhyming with neither 'wrath' not 'jazz').
Pronounced in Spanish, it would be more like 'p-ah-z': the vowel from '[The Wizard of] Oz' transplanted into 'Pass [me that marmalade]'.
