He's already forgotten who Annie is.. Tom whyyyy Indeed... curiously, since he turned back into a little boy he was, he seems to have started to forget his afterlife.

So cute. And so polite. And +1 for reminding us of the start of the chapter.

I thought he was just being super polite calling Annie "miss" because he was flustered. Thanks Gotolei for breaking my heart with the obvious - he's already forgotten who she is T_T I could have stayed oblivious to that for another two days if not for your quick intelligence.

Woah, weird! I had the chills reading this page, and out loud I said "chillychills." I go here, and the OP of the thread is zimmyzims! I've never before described my chills as "chillychills," nor am I familiar with "zimmyzims" since I'm not a forum regular. This is the strangest coincidence I've had in a long while.
Maybe I'm connected to the ether?...

I hope she sneaks in a hasty smooch on his lips just before he fades as well.
Like, nothing romantic in that sense, but he's going away forever... Boy deserves his first real kiss.
Oh well, R.I.P

Still without comment. Well, quips don't seem appropriate.

Maybe I'm connected to the ether?... wingedfoe created the Tic-Tocs. Ha! It's all so obvious... Maybe, too obvious. *looks around suspiciously* Memory is a funny thing. From the spectrum between long-term to short-term, to how memories relate (don't relate) to each other. He may still "know" Annie in his "gut", and still feel the emotional bond, but not remember the specifics about her. Who's to say, which emotional state is stronger? He may start to think, that he's finally "heading to the country" with his parents. How far off the mark is that, really? Seriously. I'm asking. How far off is that? Throw us a bone, Tom.

I'd probably blush, too. Annie is gorgeous here. Taking spirits into the ether suits her, it seems.

It occurred to me a little while after reading this strip that the reason Annie knew Mort would begin to forget things is because...her mother did.

It occurred to me a little while after reading this strip that the reason Annie knew Mort would begin to forget things is because...her mother did. Also, she probably was given basic instructions.

Not so much murder as it is setting him free.
Poor kid has been trapped on the earth for years, for apparently no real purpose other than to make Jones happy.

It's, at most, assisted suicide.

It's, at most, assisted suicide. Can't be murder if the victim is into it! It's also not strictly murder because for that, the victim has to be alive first. Mort is, at best, undead at the moment. If he was murdered by anyone, it was by the guy that dropped that bomb.

Mort losing memory would imply that memories are connected or made out of ether. Considering how Zimmy handles the ether, like a bunch of garbled thoughts crowding her mind, it seems to make sense.
I love how this comic develops its cosmology and has such a unique idea of what happens after death.
Edit: Also, not to be a downer, but you guys seem to be forgetting that Mort is already dead. He has no physical body anymore, he only exists as an etheric remnant.

Annie isn't doing anything Mort didn't ask her to do, so its all fine anyway.

Are you trolling? Your drama seems forced. No, I truly found it disturbing. It's almost like Coyote with Ysengrin. Ah! No, that's the contrast. Ysengrin never asked for Coyote to do what he did. Mort not only asked, he insisted on it. If Ysengrin were to die, for all we know, those pieces of him that Coyote stole won't be able to rejoin the ether. Like with the Old Robot, passing on is about freedom. Staying 'alive' is the prison.

On my second read of the page, I realized why Mort called her "Miss" and it was so sad! I know, I know, she warned him that he would begin to forget things. But still, for him to forget Annie was so sad.
On a happier note, I have to comment that Annie has been getting more beautiful in almost every page. As the chapters pass, Tom has been just amazing in his art style.

Bang on! People are making this much sadder and disturbing than it is. The guy wants to stop haunting, and the girl helps him to join the ether. Rasselas, fully agree, that slow building of a whole cosmology, mythology, history and everything from quasi-spontaneous beginnings to more and more whole structure of a world is one of the beauties of this comic, one thing that makes this so special.
