Aside: Is that the RotD record room from Annie/Mort's perspective? Or just the regular old library?

Wondering now how time works when you're a ghost. Ok so we know Mort died around 70 years ago, but how much time has passed for him? He says Annie and Kat were good friends but growing older now, he's only known them for around 2 years though. Has he not known or grown older with other kids in GC too? He would have even been there with Surma and Anja when they were kids. Are Annie and Kat the only friends he's made in 70 years? Or was he inserted from the 1940's as a ghost in the modern world? If the former, than that is really sad too

As far as we know, he had adventures with Eglamore and the others, maybe even the headmaster. Now, they're grown up and changed. He could be tired and feeling the weight of 70 years. I'm real curious about his "job". Is the importance he places on it real or perceived? Knowing his job duties, may help determine many things. It's hard to believe his job is just scaring school kids? The chapter's pretty light, and now we're seeing the RotD from his point of view. Unless he's going to be looking for the Eldritch Permit A 38, I'm hoping for some minor revelations.

It'd be nice if he said goodbye to Jones. I hope George and Smitty pop in to say farewell! I know this is something of a private moment, but they were friends too, and deserve the chance to say "Cheers, mate." and " FAREWELL, SPECTRAL BEING!" It would certainly lighten the mood a little bit, and give the four a good memory to enjoy around the coffee table for many years to come.

Also wondering what paperwork the rotd are going to put Mort through before they let him go. Nah, they are going to throw him an awesome retirement party, complete with a gold watch and everything.

I'd like to see some of this too, though there might be trouble if they end up telling too many people, recalling the court's nature on etheric things. Then again they could also just not care, glad to be rid of the haunt. (but at least tell Jones, Mort. don't be like that, man)

I'm coming out of lurking to put forward my two cents.
I think Mort's job is to act as a safe-but-memorable first encounter with the etheric for the kids at Gunnerkrigg. The Court may not like the etheric, but they surely recognize the importance of having the students at least somewhat familiar with it. So Mort scares kids as a way to familiarize them without putting them in any real danger. Based on George, the students clearly need it, and it seems to work at least somewhat given that Paz's was telling stories about her encounter years later.

I'm tending to believe that Mort's "job duties" were intended to give a kid ghost a sense of importance and to keep him amused for the seventy or so years until he would have died of old age. I wonder if Mort automatically felt that it was "time to go" once his intended life span expired?

I was about to suggest a very similar idea, except that I thought it was the ROTD considering the 'scaring kids' job important, not the Court itself. But this sounds definitely better! It would also fit the Court's stance towards all things etheric: even if the students' first contact with an etheric being isn't especially dangerous, it isn't too nice either. I wonder what they (the Court administration) thought when Mort apparently managed to learn to really scare people after he met Annie? Also, I'm now predicting that the bonus page will feature the headmaster being informed that Mort has retired. He will complain why they won't last for a whole century and about the hassle that's caused by hiring a new one.

Prediction for next weeks comics: RotD guy says something like "Wow, I can't believe Mort is gone. He had a really important job...I don't suppose either of you know anyone who might be able to replace him?" *gives a creepy look at Kat and Annie while slowly reaching for the axe hidden under the reception-desk*

First Kat gets a robot asking to re-kill him and now Annie has a ghost requesting something in a similar vein. They both seem pretty satisfied with existence as a whole but not all that up on continuing it.
Not having a survival instinct must lead to pretty different way of viewing the world huh?

Why are people getting so worked up over Mort?

Why are people getting so worked up over Mort? He's a fun character who's been around for almost the entire comic. There's been a lot of discussion guessing about his background, so people have thought about him a lot. And, of course, this means there will be no more MORT FUN TIME(!!!). If that isn't enough reason to be worked up about Mort in particular, he represents the first real death of a well-developed character, which is something significant. This isn't Game of Thrones, after all; we're allowed to get attached to characters in this comic!
