Kat keeps revealing the ROTD to be quite mundane. After that 'life of the party' line, I'm starting to agree with those who say she sees as this place as it 'really' is.
Also, expecting a party hat edit to appear in 3... 2...

They're secretly bros. Kat gets shit done, and he appreciates it.

Kat sees everything as cheap halloween party tricks, because of her set of mind. She's a sceptic when comes to supernatural, so she's straight to the point (Where d'ya keep records on dead blokes?). Without her Annie would probably have to uncover dark truths and overcome many obstacles before reaching to the end.

I'm still thinking it's etheric-powers based but what the robe-dude said in the last panel leaves space for an overlay on the RotD that is imagination-based.

Same application, different skins.
Kat's may be less "incredible", but it's easier to navigate.

Without her Annie would probably have to uncover dark truths and overcome many obstacles before reaching to the end. I was thinking the same thing. There is no 'real' way that the ROTD looks, there are just layers of what they want it to mean to people. So the scryer is something you use to look things up, Annie and Mort might see some wicca style incantation book, whereas Kat doesn't believe in that and just sees a rolodex. Kat sees the functional aspects of everything without the supernatural aspects that others see on top. HEnce robesguy's comment 'you must be the life of the party if that's all your seeing, jeez, you have no imagination?' I'm kind of surprised about the rolodex and VHS tape to be honest, given Kat's mind you might have expected to see an internet screen of some kind.

Man, a rolodex. I haven't thought about one of THOSE in a while. Now, like it was said above, it probably appears as a... I don't know, something to be chanted over to the other folks. But it's interesting that she's seeing *old* technology in the place of what others see something mystical. Maybe it's low-level majicky stuff.

I'm kind of surprised about the rolodex and VHS tape to be honest, given Kat's mind you might have expected to see an internet screen of some kind. Given her attitude towards ROTD, I'm surprised the tape isn't a Beta-max, or an 8-track library of passed spirits' commentary. Next, I'm expecting her to simply thumb through the rolodex. Mort and Annie will be ooing and awing, as if she's shuffling library books like a deck of cards. By the way, how are they going to view the tape, if there's no VCR?

So here's a question: is there ACTUALLY a vast array of records, and Kat can only see the ones important to them? Or are things related to Jeanne the only actual records in this facility?
If the latter is the case, then this place exists solely for either 1) Jeanne or 2) the current visitors.

The guy in the robes may not be impressed, but I've gotta give Kat respect for recognizing a Rolodex and a VHS tape! I'm sure for many, those would be intimidating objects bordering on the arcane at this point. They're certainly before Kat's time and (expected) area of technical expertise, but of course she's a geek and won't be limited by only knowing today's technology.
I only wish the VHS tape had been a microfilm or microfiche reader instead, but it seems that the plot requires our brave characters see motion and/or hear audio. :-)

Maybe the ROTD shows off their best for etheric beings and since normal people wouldn't come as often they just show their plain stuff? Now we have to see if Annie and Mort see a rolodex and VHS tape after Kat mentioned them.

Considering the chapter Give and Take and the whole "Angel" thing, I'm wondering if Kat wasn't let in on a technicality as a afterlife guide to robots, and the reason she's seeing tiny empty rooms instead of vast libraries is that not very robots have managed to die yet.
What is an angel but an afterlife guide? And why didn't the doorkeeper recognize the sign over Kat's head? Because a robot guide is something new.

I used to push in the button on the sides of VHS tapes to let me open the little flap, and then I'd just start pulling the tape out as much as I could before my mom found me. I was a, uh, weird kid.

Considering the chapter Give and Take and the whole "Angel" thing, I'm wondering if Kat wasn't let in on a technicality as a afterlife guide to robots, and the reason she's seeing tiny empty rooms instead of vast libraries is that not very robots have managed to die yet. According to the prophet Seraph 13 the first robot to "really" die was the little bit of artificial tissue burnt by Kat in the last chapter. The old robot in Give and Take was in his own words intentionally switched off. But thank you for making me reread that chapter for the umpteenth time, its a favourite. As far as I know there job-description is a bit more variable. But you have a point. Holy shit, I was born in 1995, used cassette tapes rarely, and never had to do this, an I only know what it is because of people asking about it to try to stump kids on forums. I'm a couple of years older than you and never realized this. If my right pinky finger had eyes, it would be staring at my brains and giving them very accusing look. I remember making a little mechanism to speed things up. But those things had advantages over MP3 players; try repairing them with a bit of sellotape.

Imagine if it was on a 5 1⁄4-inch floppy.
