My guess is that Kat can't see all the etheric illusions these guys laid over themselves.

This is kinda reminding me of how Zimmy was reacting to Kat. Definitely seeing different things.
Wonder what the other two were seeing.. Ketrak Mk. II?

Afterlife guides, in the plural? Kat's totally the Robo Psychopomp now. "Angel" of Death. What he said. I believe its something along the lines of Jones were future living robots can do effect the ether like humans and so Kat is being shaped into their god.

welp, sounds like it wasn't just a case of mistake coat rack identity. so i'm now heavily leaning towards individualized perceptions of RoTD... who's with me! (sorry, it's late and i didn't sleep enough yesterday)

Even the big guy in the corner is wearing a fake monster glove!
And I ent think he was referring to guides in the plural, Annie was the only one on the panel there. he was just complaining about guides in general, in the same way when one kid annoys an old man he starts complaining about kids in general. "you damn kids! "

I have a theory about ROTD. Everyone employed there is a ghost. Mort is out there in the field. He works with clients. He has to look the part. Now, these guys, deep inside the back office, do not really HAVE to look like ghosts, but there is still some stupid company dress code forcing them to appear "spooky". So they do. With the least possible effort involved, possibly even in "stick it to the man" spirit (hah!), and we are seeing the results. Oh, and also, I'm not looking too much into Kat seeing the guy, and the rest not seeing him. Annie and Mort could just have assumed he was part of the decor, he kinda looked like an iron maiden. Kat saw him for what he was, because she still can't get over how ridiculous that decor is Even the big guy in the corner is wearing a fake monster glove! Also, take note of the tag still attached to the shroud (curious: does it have washing instructions? :3). I wonder where ROTD buys this stuff I agree, guides do not seem to be particularly well liked at ROTD (see the "keep your hands off the staff" comment from the receptionist ). I'm getting some sort of inter-departamental bickering at a large organisation vibe, not any real enmity, though.

Enmity, no. I was thinking "rivalry", but "inter-departamental bickering" ... might just be even better.

Not particularly surprising that other psychopomps would have tried getting information from there, however, Annie is the only medium to have learned about Jeanne.

Afterlife guides, in the plural? Exactly what I first thought! (I don't think that necessarily makes Kat a psychopomp, though; any more than Annie is one. Besides, if the guy at the door didn't know what Kat was, why should this guy? He could be making assumptions.)

RobesGuy was definitely complaining about Annie by using the stereotype of "you guide types".
I'm *super* curious as to what Annie and Mort see in this scene. Does a frightening spectre of gore just materialize out of the wall? They're huddling pretty good in the first panel.
Kat's so unimpressed, it's great. Does RobesGuy remind anyone else of some teenager who works at the carnival?

I also think it's funny that Tom is at least playing around with the idea.

I wonder what information is typically found in the ROTD library if they don't have information on Jeanne?

I don't think the plural is meant to adress both Annie and Kat, it seems rather like how you adress someone as being representative of the whole category they belong to, just like a woman would tell a single man "you men have an easier time getting a rise…"
"You afterlife guides" is then understood to mean "the afterlife guides, as a category, here represented by your person".

With the Receptionskelly's "hands off" attitude towards pschopomps, and now this guy, I wonder, if past ones have taken ROTD employees to the other side. Perhaps not all ROTD are there by choice. At the beginning of the chapter, I had a terrible thought. What if they somehow come upon the spirit of the destroyed robo-wing? It's small, malformed, and confused soul could be screaming out in pain and existential horror. What would Annie and Kat do? Now, what would they do, if they ran into a ROTD prisoner employee? It would be an interesting juxtaposition with the rest of this chapter.
Also, didn't Mort say he was a special case?

It's looking more and more likely that Annie and Mort see things differently, so the next question is what do they see?
Does this guy actually look like a shrouded figure with green hands? Did they see a real bat fly out to verify Kat? Did the receptionist look flat? Did the arrow pointing to the library appear out of thin air? How "incredible" is it?
How different could it be and still have all the creatures there?

Stupid theory (didn't sleep hardly at all last night) but what if this entire RoTD experience was just Mort making illusions? He did improve significantly with just a little coaching. Maybe he's only playing at being a loveable simpleton and really knows everything, and just wanted to wait until the right time to dole out critical plot-advancing information! .......... nah.

Besides, if the guy at the door didn't know what Kat was, why should this guy? He could be making assumptions.) I guess it is worth noting that Mr. Blanket is in the room marked "library," maybe a stickler for researching/going around and learning about things like this, and the other guy's just a sticker receptionist. Outdated records maybe? Tho philman's thing about it being directed towards guides in general could have weight to it as well. We know that at least Muut, if not other guides as well (" our reach" if he means more than him and Annie), is aware that there's some sort of difficulty in Jeanne's situation (albeit getting some details wrong, like her ability to cross the river). On an unrelated note, Special Cases probably involve a mess of paperwork.. not many people (?) would want to get tangled in that.

Interesting. Guides, plural. More than one guide.
Is it Kat's destiny to lead robot souls to the robo-afterlife? Seems like it would interfere with her studies.

Guides plural could well mean Annie and Muut. He basically put her on the case.
I think it's used in general, though. Tom zooms in to just show Annie while That Guy is complaining about guides. It'd be easier for me to read Kat into his complaint if she were in frame.

Agreeing with everyone else on the guy just singling out Annie as a plural for all the psychopomps who've come in there in the past.
Also, I like how you can see a tag on the guy's robe in panels 2 and 3.
Can't even rip it off, can you? You lazy teenager.
edit;
edited because wrong panels
