So, Word of Tom says that Kat couldn't get Annie's blinker stone to work, and appears as 'grey/ordinary' through ethervision; but I'm not ready to take either comment at face value. For instance, even Renardine appeared grey while not actively "projecting". I think that Kat actually has access to the same powers as her mother, but just thinks too much to use them deliberately. (You see this sort of thing in other places, for instance flying in the Hitchiker's series.) The prime evidence I have for this hypothesis is Kat's anti-grav device. If the device was based on pure science, then Kat should be able to replicate it -a thermos and coat hangers aren't exactly hard to come by. Even some weird unobtainium ingredient should be available through the Court, especially if she could get it when she was that young. The only other possibility would be that she doesn't exactly know how she got it to work in the first place. We know that Anja's power could be "Imbued" into a machine - in her case, the "computer" meant to contain Renard. It's possible that Kat did the same (subconsciously) with her anti-g device. This is where the "thinking about it too hard" part comes in. When Kat made her device, her goal wasn't the chamber itself, it was studying protein folding. Therefore, she wasn't paying too close attention to what she was doing. Finally, there's a thematic connection. Compare the hovercraft's "propultion effect to Anja's "bubble shield". (I know it isn't proof by itself, but it is valid evidence.) On an ancillary note, Kat may wind up eventually "imbuing" this power into the biomechanical robot she's growing... To only Tom knows what end.

So... Nothing? I want a discussion, not just likes.

I'm waiting until we learn further about why Kat is seeing things Annie and Mort clearly are not (I personally just thing she's too cynical to see things how they really are [you say she "thinks too much"]). So I really like your theory; it makes a lot of sense... not to mention what Zimmy saw her as. She must be supernatural somehow.
Sorry I don't have much to contribute.

It makes sense to me. She may be using a power that is transparent to her, just an unconscious ability that comes into play when she needs it, just as we don't think about every muscle and joint as we move our hands to accomplish things.
She's a good student, and has taken courses that emphasize causal relationships and physics in general, so when she does something that doesn't fit that paradigm she rationalizes it by saying "this device is doing thus and so", when what it is actually doing is providing a focus for her to do it herself.

Well said. Additionally, she could be suppressing some expressions of her abilities deliberately because she doesn't believe in that stuff. Whether her abilities are suppressed because she says she doesn't believe in them, or she suppresses her abilities because she doesn't believe in them is a fine distinction that is really completely meaningless even though I felt obligated to point it out if thats the way it really happens.

I have my own reasons to argue with the theory. The reasons are small, petty, highly subjective, and personal; but they are there.
However, you did point out that color thing and Tom rarely does things without reason soooooo... I can't not see it anymore.
There hasn't been any other instances of that color/shape effect cropping up around Kat lately, so it could be an idea that Tom has abandoned, but now that just sounds like my conformation bias kicking in.

Kinda makes sense, though I'm guessing that at the very least she's she's aware that something about her is different. Was it ever said that she wouldn't be able to replicate the antigrav chamber? Word of Tom doesn't say anything like that, and I don't remember anything along those lines in-comic..? Also it might be worth noting that the vast majority of Gunnerkrigg is some variation or another of purple Kinda reminds me of a train of thought I had a couple weeks back. What if Kat decided to try to forcibly gain access to the computer, by forging a pendant or something? Assuming Annie's help with the ether stuff, would she be able to do it (also assuming she doesn't just ask Anja about it because who does silly stuff like that)?
