I kind of think that Kat just sees it as cheap and hokey cos she doesn't really grasp the concept of an afterlife in the same way that Annie would.

I love the contrast in Annie and Kat's reactions.

Looks like the Realm of the Dead is being run on a budget. And our Grim Reaper is a bit less impressive than we might have imagined...
EDIT: I bloody hate the autocorrect on my smartphone!

This feels suspiciously like another time Annie tried to enter a different type of being's domain.

Kat's calling bullshit and demanding some stern words with the man behind the curtain. In panel three she's also purple.

Perhaps, Annie is seeing the etheric environment, while Kat is seeing a more shallow representation... Or Annie is easily impressed by budget Halloween decor. It could go either way. You've gotta love the pumpkins!

Random thought: did they close the door behind them? Does it need to be closed before it can revert to boring ol' door state?

So this is where Mort originally learned how to be a spooooky ghost.
And now the girl who helped him become the clown who wants your eyeballs is right in it.
Um.

Looks like Mort has been practicing this whole scary illusion thing a bit? Protip: you don't actually have to include the strings on the scary creatures in the illusion.

Wow, I knew Tom had a dark side to him, but this is too much. The realm of the dead is no subject for a children's webcomic.
Kat and Ann's sinister surroundings really highlight the brutal injustice of death us mortals have to suffer.
gonna take my dog for a walk and really reevaluate my life
also I love how Ann is like "this is amazing" and Kat is like "this is crap"

Soooo, I hear The Nutcracker's Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy in my head as they walk down this hall. It seems fitting somehow.
Also, I wonder if they each see the hall differently. Annie seems really impressed with something beautiful, whereas Kat seems to be seeing.. well, Halloween stuff. If this is what spooky-death-stuff means to her psyche, maybe this is why the hall is represented with such silly cardboard-cut-out decor.

Yeah, I think each of them is seeing the scene differently. The question, though, is who is seeing it correctly?

What is this obsession with flying rats, net weaving bugs, and gigantic orange gourds in relation to death?

So this is where Mort originally learned how to be a spooooky ghost. This explains a lot actually. I wouldn't expect graduates of the Realm of Cheap Halloween Decorations University to make for particularly scary ghosts. Yeah, I think each of them is seeing the scene differently. The question, though, is who is seeing it correctly? Wait, I like this idea better. Maybe Kat is the only one seeing it like this. Maybe Annie is seeing a more wondrous version. EDIT: Yeah, this is definitely right considering Annie's reaction. I wonder if them seeing different things is because Annie can see into the ether or if its based on their personalities/emotions/beliefs/experiences.

What is this obsession with flying rats, net weaving bugs, and gigantic orange gourds in relation to death? The skull-headed munchkin punching tickets up front asked Death if he could do something to spruce up an otherwise unremarkable hallway- make it worthy of th' ROTD, ya know? Death apparently sent someone to the store and, confused, they returned with Halloween decorations. That's my theory at least. Other people seem to think that Kat's predisposition to science can't handle what her eyes are seeing- and is causing her to hallucinate this whole scene.

My current hypothesis is that Annie can see the etheric principles underlaying this hallway, so while she can see the cheap halloween decorations, she can also actually see how the hall is "constructed", so she's a lot more impressed than Kat.

The etheric answer to Annie's reaction is probably the true one, but I present a more amusing theory: Annie is seeing the same thing we are. Having been raised isolated in a hospital, she has never really experienced halloween, and is thus genuinely impressed by a bunch of cheap plastic bats and poorly made pumpkins.
No wonder Mort was so terrible at scaring.
