"Ale and Wenches" is the beloved font of most speech bubbles in Gunnerkrigg Court. Am I mistaken, or is this font also used for the end credits of the second Hobbit movie?

Wikia gives you ads before it'll let you follow external links? What the hell is this? I'm half tempted to put together a GreaseMonkey script to get around this (it's as easy as "Copy link location" + new tab + paste, but it should be automatic), but there's probably one already. If there is, though, I bet it's not called "Robotic Redirecting Device".

yeah that doesn't work too well =PFun fact about fonts: since the forums aren't limited to the drop-down it gives you, you can make it use any font you have on your computer.Like this one. Though I'm guessing not many have it installed.. How about this one? Or this one?

Ok, it's definitely the font makers' fault. How do you even mess it up like that..

All right, no one else recognizes the font from the Hobbit movie? I do have a filter in my browser to get rid of all Comic Sans.

E: Wow, you really are a font nerd! Thank you! Once I was going to meet up with my sister somewhere in the city. She gave me directions to the restaurant she was on. The last instruction was "Now, I don't remember what the restaurant was called, but I think their sign is written in Party LET." Which led me right on spot.

I picked up a coaster this weekend from a local artist who runs an antique printing press under the business name "Kern Girl." The coaster has beautifully hand laid lettering in an old sans serif font I am not enough of a geek to know with the dictionary definition of KERN on it. I now feel unworthy of this item and am half tempted to offer to mail it to you, Purg.

If you think of a letter in old hand-set type as a back (that goes into the rack) and a face (that projects in front of the back and actually forms the letter), "kern" as a noun is a portion of the face that extends beyond the back. This most commonly happens in tilted fonts such as italics. So if the word had ever taken on a colloquial meaning it would probably be a person or thing that goes outside expectations (which can be good or bad - in some cases depending entirely on whom you ask).
"Kerning" as a noun is an adjustment to the spacing between letters in a word. As a verb it's the act of making such an adjustment.

Yep, those are the two definitions listed on the coaster.

All right, no one else recognizes the font from the Hobbit movie? I believe it's an original font that imitates the Elvish Tengwar-script. At least that's what I seem to recall.

I'm half tempted to put together a GreaseMonkey script to get around this (it's as easy as "Copy link location" + new tab + paste, but it should be automatic), but there's probably one already. There are several full plugins. That allow to set whitelist/blacklist. After all, it's a common problem - there are lots of desperate sites like wikia and /d/Art. Fun fact about fonts: since the forums aren't limited to the drop-down it gives you, For me, half of the new PB scripts are eaten by bugs. In addition to randomly appearing and disappearing IP-bans, bad anchors, and so on. Oh, well. you can make it use any font you have on your computer. Yeah, but practically this means "usually will be rendered as whatever fallback font the viewer's browser uses". You may use "Ale and Wenches" all the time, or use some or other autocorrection plugin to always wrap text "Seed Bismuth" in Yytrium - but it's not like a lot of people have either of those installed anyway.

In addition to randomly appearing and disappearing IP-bans, bad anchors, and so on. Oh, well. Yeah it's no secret that proboards is basically fubar. Can't even specify your own font sizes..and the theme is an ugly, space-wasting mess that maybe allows two posts to be shown at a time. Not even starting on the wysiwyg editor's behaviors. you can make it use any font you have on your computer. Yeah, but practically this means "usually will be rendered as whatever fallback font the viewer's browser uses". Of course I don't, who goes to the trouble to always specify a custom font or find a parser to insert them? Unless you're one of those special snowflakes from iphone forums or something.. Note the "fun fact" part And if I wanted to mess with people's browsers then I wouldn't choose fonts that are used often in the comic, I'd use fonts that more than likely don't come with windows or one that's made for this particular distro. And I'm guessing those show as a serif font at worst.

Am I mistaken, or is this font also used for the end credits of the second Hobbit movie? A&W is a member of a larger font family which I believe is called Celtic, with several similar fonts in its subfamily. I found this out after I spotted what looked like A&W on a delivery truck, which turned out to be less of a cool board-reportable phenomenon than I thought. I would assume the Hobbit font is just some similar font in this family.

This reminds me that since I upgraded my computer, I have to track down and re-install my vast collection of fonts. I think I might have backed it up on a flash drive somewhere, and I really hope I did. My old hard drive died, and I really don't feel like scouring the internet again to rebuild it. Also, here's another site that has a bunch of Middle-Earth themed fonts. One of them might be the end credits font.

Of course I don't, who goes to the trouble to always specify a custom font or find a parser to insert them? Actually, all bicycles are already invented, and not hard to find. Autocorrection isn't exotic, nor more controllable manual variants - abcTajpu needs only "|!exist;=%u2204" added to the list, then if you type "!exist;<hotkey>" it's replaced with "∄". For example. Unless you're one of those special snowflakes from iphone forums or something.. Heh, yeah. Note the "fun fact" part Well, yeah, but the possibility exists. Not that there's any point in reducing readability with vignettes like this, but some "snowflakes" choose weird colours. Then again, Seed Bismuth is kind of touted, so why not have fun - if this could work, that is. A&W is a member of a larger font family which I believe is called Celtic, with several similar fonts in its subfamily. A search on myfonts.com gives this. Heh, random demo text for "Celtics Modern" happened to be "Many-wived Jack laughs at probes of sex". Evidently, the preview robot agrees with my outrageous speculation.

Droid Sans and Dejavu Sans would like to have a word with you. And that's coming from an ubuntu user (also Play. but that's better used for window decorations than the default font anyway)
