The brief eye-open is a very clever touch; I like it!
Also, I definitely understand how Kat is feeling in that last panel.

Maybe she had to go to the bathroom. I actually have no idea where Annie and Kat's relationship is going to go after this. It will be interesting!

So far I thought Annie wanted to ship them together... So why the sudden tension?

From what little I can see Annie's pose looks really tense. Her running away also seems quite agitated. Best case she has to... find... a... something behind that wall. Let's hopes she's just pissed her best friend was dating someone without telling her. For now I'm gonna pretend she's getting Renard to celebrate. Yeah, that's nice. While she preoccupied at the moment, Kat doesn't seem too worried about it. That's a good sign. Still there's gonna be at least a very awkward talk coming when Kat gets back to their room.

I suppose I can console myself with the fact that even the best sometimes gets it wrong! So far I thought Annie wanted to ship them together... So why the sudden tension? It's not necessarily tension. I mean, it could be, for narrative's sake if nothing else, but I know if I came up on one of my buddies heavy in a makeout session (or, y'know, other activities) with their new sweetie, I'd find somewhere else to be pretty quick too. Gotta give them lovebirds their privacy!

This summer, the return of the wrath of happening strikes back again and this time it's happening 2: electric happening
It would be totally conceivable that Annie just left out of some mix of surprise, awkwardness, and not wanting to interrupt. But, if those were the reasons, why include this scene?

I think Annie is more jealous than shocked.
She'll probably tell them to get a room.

Gotta give them lovebirds their privacy! That's true (the privacy angle), and I think Annie's (admittedly very subtle) body language in the fourth panel suggests it; it's not an "Oh crap, WHY!" running away, it's more of a "I'm just gonna go...be somewhere else for a while" sort of march.

And a crowd of little robots watching! What a bunch of voyeurs! A bunch of Eye Witness models! [REC] Seriously, that seems nice... I love the storytelling here. We were right that Annie would walk in on them kissing, but this way we still can't be completely sure what Annie's reaction really is. She seems upset, but maybe that's just us reading a lot into those tiny little drawings. She could just be surprised or a little embarrased for seeing something she wasn't supposed to. Tensions keep building!

I think it's more a mixture of "What, I , uh, am too early and have suddenly remembered something very important to do" and upset that Kat didn't tell her.
Also possibly upset/worried that now she's lost her best/only friend to Paz. Maybe she'll blame all the new forest duties that have been keeping her busy lately, and thinks that Kat thinks she is abandoning her again.
People can get jealous when their best friends suddenly start hanging out a lot with a new partner, takes time away from their previous best friend time.
Also, LOVE to see the next panel when Kat goes back to the Dorm: "yes I'm fine with you and Paz, hahahaha.
Why wouldn't I be, hahaha
You want to go and make some robot things together? huh? sciencey, robots?"

Thinking about it, this is Ms. Forest Person Kat's rooming with.. would this warrant "desperate times?"
What kind of stuff might she find when she gets back to the dorms?

Hrm. Well having once been a teenager I'll put my guess on Annie doing her best to be happy for Kat but feeling hurt and a little left behind by this new turn of events. Kat is having relationships and growing closer to other people while Annie's been busy chumming it up with wacky forest critters. For a teenage girl this could be pretty upsetting. Not only is she not fitting in with her peers she's also now got to watch her best friend discover the world of dating without her. Adding to this the complication of Annie's heritage making thoughts of marriage for her end in certain premature death instead of a happily-ever-after and I dunno this could just be quite a tangled web of emotions we're dealing with.
You know... it's a little bit like we've been watching these two mature in opposite directions - Kat started the story very childlike and immature, but has developed into a strong young woman with deep inner conflicts. Annie started out as a frigid, no-nonsense, deeply unhappy miniature adult of a girl and has since almost regressed into this wildchild happy-go-lucky fire elemental. And while both paths have been good for their respective states of mental health I can definitely see a conflict arising out of their potential mutual jealousy over these differences.
Annie may envy Kat's transition into adulthood. Kat is essentially leaving her in the dust to go and be a grown-up with grown-up problems having grown-up relationships. Meanwhile Kat may envy Annie's comparative lack of social responsibilities. We've just seen the extent of Annie's problematic interactions with the forest denizens, after all, and that was solved by lighting everything on fire. Meanwhile Kat's problems have to be picked through delicately by agonising over feelings and worrying about how to behave in a socially acceptable manner. Not really on the same level of difficulty there... though to be fair Annie's problems are more life-or-death.
Anyway I can see tension rising when both girls believe their lot in life is the harder one, yet each views the other as having abandoned their friendship for things they view as "easier" or more fun. Annie sees Kat smooching on hot ladies, doesn't understand what an emotional minefield dating is. Kat sees Annie running around in the woods, doesn't get the whole "lighting yourself on fire to save a wolf god that once tried to kill you" aspect. Classic scenario of two friends no longer sharing the same interests.
As always, though, Tom will doubtless do something completely unexpected that no one could have possibly predicted. Nothing for it but to wait.

I think it would be great if this entire chapter was nothing but a string of events where Kat thinks things are going totally wrong but then they end up working out just fine.
And then at the very end, she turns off the simulation and says "Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's how it's all gonna go." Muahaha.

We taking bets on how Annie reacts to this? Okay. Thus far, I can list at least 6 alternatives (please extend): 1. Annie is her "subtle" self and just tries to vanish "smoothly" to give them time together. Seems reasonable in the light of last time Kat had a crush on someone of her age. 2. Annie has grown into one mischievous teenager and goes to get Renard to celebrate/taunt. 3. Annie is suddenly upset about Kat not having told about her new relationship. This relatively likely option would probably have the most short-living consequences as it would just be solved with a laughter in a page soon to come. 4. Annie is "jealous" of Kat in the "best-friends" manner, running away as she suddenly feels she is no longer the closest person to Kat that she used to be as the best friend, because now Kat is dating someone, and that's even a girl so may feel like taking the best friend place as well. 5. Annie is secretly in love with Kat and jealous. In light of the most recent events this no longer seems very likely, but she has a habit of wearing a mask, so this is at least a possibility. I really hope this is not true. A teenage love triangle drama just is not what I want to read about. Ugh, maybe it could have some interesting side effects in the main story line, I guess, but certainly am not enthusiastic about it. 6. Annie is homophobic and runs in disgust. I think this is very much an outside chance unlikely to occur, but had to list it as it could happen. My bet: originally I was pondering between 1 and 3, but suddenly I feel 4 might be it. So, I say 4, Annie is upset because she feels she lost Kat as a best friend. This might slightly mix with the no. 3, at least in the manner that this feeling is partly raised by the fact that Kat did not tell her about her affair with Paz, thus shutting her out from important developments in her life. But I think the she really is not so much upset about Kat not telling than she is about Kat distancing from her. So, number 4 with the particular detail given above. Edit: listing some bets: -Jim North, thedoctor and Foresterr are of position 1 (right, Foresterr, you mean this?). -Toloc goes for 2 (I got this option from him). -Philman supports 3 with a hint of 4. -I think Basser is with me, basically the same idea put differently. And so is Rymdljus. So, no. 4 for them. Edit2: if we're into listing these bets, please could somebody else continue it, as I don't really have time. Sorry for starting something I couldn't and never intended to finish. Edit3: this was my last edit to this post for now, gotta do some work too.
