That last one looks a bit odd.

Indeed. Annie's drawn a bit strangely here.
Worst case scenario: this guy's immune to fire.

The only words I could find in the page were Tom's comment.
....anyway, I felt "burn!" should have been the catch phrase for one of the last few pages, but this is nice too... I like Annie's "you do not impress me" -face when that bloody troll or whatever comes to "get her" following the real-tree-guy's command.

She looks a bit strange in panel 2, as well.
I swear, we always decry tiny art changes in every page.

That last one looks a bit odd. True, she has somewhat strange nose and chin, mostly nose though. Not like we have seen it before. I imagine, with a smaller nose it would definitely look like Annie, and pull that chin a bit longer, to make her face a little more long and slender, and she's Annie. Maybe it's that sudden shortening of her face that is most disturbing after all. Or maybe it's just the unusually big nose.

I think it's the curve of her nostril that throws it off. If it was shorter her nose would still look long, but not as weird.

"The level of art in this comic is amazing." Well, of course that's one of the main reasons it's so unique among webcomics.

Well, Annie has progressed from 12yo to 14-15, so expect some maturing of features over that time. In this case, I think the nose is a trifle long, and it's accentuated by the long brow and having the hair swept right back.

The fact that I notice and question the significance of Tom drawing Annie's nose in a different way says a lot about the high quality art/characterization Gunnerkrigg has.

Staring down probably counts as "talking their language", too. Though proper posturing should have also included spreading wings to look bigger. Worst case scenario: this guy's immune to fire. He looks stony. But then, the question is "immune to how much fire?"

I imagine that I am wrong, but is it possible her face is actually changing in this moment? Annie is part fire elemental... (Fully aware that this is pretty unlikely and that the next page won't be showing her with a further altered face, but just thought I'd throw that out there.)

Worst case scenario: this guy's immune to fire. I was thinking, that the worst case scenario would be him feeding on fire. Like a cinder man of sorts. I imagine that we're about to see a fiery throw-down, though. Hopefully, ending in a one-liner from Annie. Perhaps, after the hard fought battle, she can turn to the crowd with eyes aflame and calmly say, "Next..."

For the record, Tom's Twitter reads at time of posting: "Tom changed the recent page because lots of people on the internet were saying "Annie's got a big ol' Jew nose"!!"
I noticed this before I came to the forums today and read the critiques.

I noticed this before I came to the forums today and read the critiques. Twitter responses seem to be taking Tom/Mort's humour a little too literally, with much outrage about the racist slur. I haven't seen anything like that here, but there might have been a comment on the internet to that effect. Teacup storms aside, what do you think of the quick cosmetic surgery? I think it's an improvement (Kat's supposed to be the one with 'a very nice nose')

I think it's an improvement (Kat's supposed to be the one with 'a very nice nose') Unfortunately, that's a verbatim quote from the page comments. I think I agree with your assessment of the change. I'm not sure it's intended to be surgical though: It seems the fire around Annie is pretty intense just up and in front of her; enough so to cast shadows on her face. It's just that this particular shadow doesn't quite work well with the level of abstraction people are used to in Tom's drawings. (Yes, even the recent ones. It's not photo-realistic, nor intended to be be so.) Or perhaps even not to well with the abstraction level in the rest of that panel ... Convention, after all, is the canvas on which we all paint. Even when we've established those conventions ourselves.
