I didn't know wisps were depicted as wasps. Or is it just a word play...
Also, the tongue!

My first thought on seeing the comic, " you're such a messy eater coyote."
Anyways, speak their language.... Of violence? That's not going to work well for Annie. Plus it didn't really seem like their anger was directed at Annie, so why create any?
First though she needs to convince them that she isn't fully human and to gain their respect or maybe trust in some way. Obviously they have lost respect or whatever towards Ysengrin.

Coyote's face just looks straight-up scary in those first few panels.

I think "start speaking their language" was the wisest thing coyote said up to now.

Hmm, no I would say she's most likely supposed to gain their respect. Their "language" would appear to be typical dominance hierarchy, hence they all attack Ysengrin to establish whether he's still alpha or not. They haven't lost respect for him, they're only testing whether their respect is still warranted. Annie showing up in the midst of the fray with her hair up in flames would probably scare the bejesus out of most of them and cement her place as a badass worthy of being counted as one of them. Once she has her place as a worthy foe then they'll probably all turn helpful and cool. It's like any group of macho dudes, really, all you gotta do is deliver a sick burn to the baddest one and suddenly you're their bro. And I haven't seen anything that would indicate "anger" from the forest monsters. Seemed more like a group of salty old warriors being gruff with each other to me.

Sheesh Coyote, learn to chew with your mouth closed. Anyone else here want a bonus comic showing him with indigestion?

I didn't know wisps were depicted as wasps. Or is it just a word play... Also, the tongue! Will-o'-the-wisps are lights, and draw people away from others/their paths TO CERTAIN DOOM, so this one certainly follows that theme. It looked more like a sprite/fairy (which is another attribute) until the wasp-thing became more clear. Tom has been known to take lore and mold it to his own devices. c:

How Coyote knows about Ysengrin's struggle in the Great Outdoor Fight remains a mystery, unless he's within eyesight of the ruins, which is hard to tell. In any event, today's comic gives us visual proof that he just can't keep his tongue.

Their language is violence. That reminded me of a old tv show that used to run here when I was young... Their turf is the Gillitie Wood. Their language is violence. Their opponents: who knows... Every job full of risk For the men of Ysengrin's eleven. Not that I particularly enjoyed the show, but the opening sequence stayed in my head.

Will o-the wisp wasps. Such.. good wordplay!
So Coyote suddenly pops out, tells Annie that Ysengrin might need her, and disappears again.
...suspicious!

The problem with these wisps is that you can never have just one. I would have stayed for a longer cameo, but I'm still peckish.

Hm! I had never thought of lies as being non-fluid. Coyote has the MOST DERANGED FACES sometimes. It's a combination of that wide- and wild-eyed stare, methinks. Beware, Coyote's Eye, it seems to be more upsetting that we once thought. It is nice to know he's still looking out for her though, as random as his benevolence may be. Yeah Annie quit messing with bugs and kick some etheric butt! OH MY GOB WHY DID YOU HAVE TO CHANGE YOUR AVATAR TO THAT WHY.

I think it's less a question of being helpful and more that it would be hilarious to see a teenage girl beat the tar out of a bunch of forest demons.

I'm inclined to believe coyote was "just out hunting" until he showed up in the background of page 1250. He's not omniscient, but it's plausible that he's been casually keeping tabs on Ysengrin and Annie this whole time – hunting wouldn't take 100% of his attention, and his vision probably isn't limited to his immediate surroundings.
So he's "running" around the forest looking for something worth eating, and notices out of the corner of his eye that Annie's getting creeped on by a wisp. So he heads over there: mostly because the situation is amusing, but also to help his Medium out of a pickle, and grab a snack. That's three good reasons to show up, and it's not like it took much effort.
And yeah, of course Coyote doesn't care whether his food is sentient. He's a god, and a coyote. And he can probably communicate with any animal, sentient or not, so the division is largely arbitrary.

I didn't know it was like Annie to think that those monsters are too much for her. What's causing that white glow in the last panel?

All of Coyote's shenanigans up until this point have either been undertaken with a plan in mind, or because he's having fun acting in the spur of the moment. If the former, Annie's death here wouldn't serve his plans; if the latter, Annie's death would deprive him of what appears to be his favorite current plaything. It's no surprise he's acted to save her life, and he doesn't need to be benevolent for his actions here to make sense.
As for why he killed the wisp, well, 1) Coyote's not very nice, and 2) it's pretty normal for gods in fiction to adhere to inhuman moral principles and/or incorporate reified ritual acts into their daily life. Coyote is Coyote; he claims to be the deification (that was supposed to be "reification" but autocorrect changed it; the change seems appropriate) of man’s fear that death is a capricious, malevolent, and hungry force active in the universe. 'Course he's gonna hunt, and of course he's going to kill what he hunts—stalking and killing things like a terrible monster is kinda his thing. Every so often his nature shines through—the devouring mouth full of terrible fangs sneaking up behind the wisp is in the comic for a reason.
