I love how Yiss has to keep his crew in check with violence.
It's really a tough love world in this forest.

Them creatures don't look like they want to have a nice chit-chat... I'm curious to see this unfold, very curious. Though I hope Annie doesn't try to slam one of them to the ground, that wouldn't work as well as it did with Ysengrin. D:
I bet Annie will have to fight the strongest of them all, and it'll be... Boxbot. Calling it.

I would bet a fair number, if not all, of these creatures used to be human. Presumably they have very good reasons for no longer being human.

Annie: "Because I demand it!" *FWOOOSH* This is obviously the next line, yet no more epic for all that. And then Tom will go and put in something both completely different and, if possible, even more epic/appropriate. Just because it's Tom, my money is on her NOT doing this. But, this was exactly what I thought of, too.

Annie's expression in panel 4 suggests she's not feeling up to demanding anything beyond a nice, safe cage!
...also, hold the lemon tea!

I love how Yiss has to keep his crew in check with violence. It's really a tough love world in this forest. This is what you get if you maltreat your army. Come on, what did he expect when he left them in ruins and then comes back after decades, even centuries? A happy reconnection with a bunch of loyal fellows? Maybe he should have expected a crew of hungry and angry monsters, no?

Annie: "Because I demand it!" *FWOOOSH* Because she commands it, I'd say. Without the boasting, and without the *FWOOOSH*. And, since I'm posting ... Notice how Surma's "I will never send you into danger" is echoed in Ys' "I would never intentionally hurt you"?

'Grin certainly feeds them replies to feed Annie, doesn't he? A curious detail: he was the one who taught Antimony that show-off trick. Annie: "Because I demand it!" *FWOOOSH* Well, she may ask (before or after the transformation) just how much the dude wants her to answer this question. Or whether he's just feels inclined to. Or politely express her appreciation for not caring about her nature ( after the firework). I mean, that being Annie, now that she's pushed, who knows? Excuse my french but shit is going down! And hair is going up. I bet Annie will have to fight the strongest of them all, and it'll be... Boxbot. Calling it. Alternatively, she may make a semi-illusory Boxbot woven from fires advancing on the most "curious" one. That'll show 'em.

Damn, that snake got curbstomped. Ysengrin is now moving up the ranks of my favorite characters.
Reminds me of how Jones described the posturing of the animal kingdom...

I think this is a test. The monsters aren't really mean (or maybe they are but Ys knew they would act like this). Annie has to win their respect without giving into fear or anger.

C'mon, C'mon Annie, bring out the whoop-ass!
The monsters speak as though they never met Surma. SO 1. They are lying, and testing this new human/daughter 2. They never met Surma, which says a bit about a) their involvement with the rest of the forest, and with court relations in the past and b) Ysengrin's move in bringing Annie here.

If they're gonna act so angry... why didn't they just wander off? Not sure why they're obligated to just sit in these ruins.
They're one of three things: dumb, bound by some kind of rule or magic, or bluffing.

For all we know, he just hasn't visited in a year or two. Am I missing something?

There's no reason why they would have met Surma as far as I know. Annie is meeting them as part of the forest medium's job, Surma was the court's medium. We don't see Eyebrows Boy here with Ysengrin meeting the nice monsters do we? (He's probably meeting the Court's version, the alleyway of abandoned boxbots)

Pretty Big Snake Guy is best friends with Pretty Big Spider Guy. They hit the booze and talk about the good ol' times every night.

2. They never met Surma, which says a bit about a) their involvement with the rest of the forest, and with court relations in the past There's no reason why they would have met Surma as far as I know. Because Surma was very popular there, and it's not like no one knows Annie herself after that summer. Thus, if all these guys somehow missed hot news both times, this indeed speaks a lot about how much of contact they have with the rest of locals.

These guys are possibly also Elementals. They would respect her if she explains what she is, but she has to know what to say (and they left a nice opening for that at the end of this page). She can't just open a can of whoop-ass on her equals, all of whom have centuries more experience than her (even if she doesn't know that yet). The point is, presumably, to gain sparring partners on her level, after all.

Problem with the 'used to be humans' theory also is that when humans become forest creatures they get the brains of the animal they become...

Hm. I guess now we get to see what the Court Founders were so afraid of that they sacrificed an innocent life to keep it out. (Or at least part of what they were afraid of...)
