Aww, you cheater! (kidding)
It feels like we're missing a page here (although I know we're not), like Hetty asked something and Reynard took awhile to respond. Seems out of character for Rey to just start talking like that.

It's totally in character. Knocked this together with MS Paint. When did page 42 come out, anyone know?

Given Hetty's face in panel 2, I'm guessing Reynardine shut her down off-camera and she's sulking a bit.

It's totally in character. Sorry, let me clarify. It's not in character for him to explain his backstory to anyone (without ample provocation). ]Nah, no, look at Hetty, she's surprised that Renard's talking. She wasn't expecting him to. Yes, I noticed that. I was just giving an example.

I think he's about to use it to segue into a lesson about how to treat humans or how to deal with ownership.

So, on Monday we answer the allusive questions, was Rey trying to posses Annie or not?

The artwork in the main panel of this page is beautiful. Agreed. I'm trying my best to shop the bubble off of Annie's head for an avatar. :3

Or knowing our luck, end of the chapter we'll find out! Then again, Tom sometimes does divulge information when we least expect him to outright do it. The exchange in that case though is we'll all get our answer but then about 100 more will pop up in its place. Which is fine because what good story doesn't have us coming back for more?

Sorry! By the time midnight rolls around I'm too engrossed in 5 card hold'em with internet strangers to do a proper job. It feels like we're missing a page here (although I know we're not), like Hetty asked something and Reynard took awhile to respond. Seems out of character for Rey to just start talking like that. It is kind of weird. Tom doesn't usually do much time-skipping.

Clearly, Rey's plan is to confess his paternal love for Annie and have Hetty die of cognitive dissonance.

This page shows that Renard triggered some kind of explosion or fire when he escaped. That explains why there seems to come smoke from both him and Eglamore in pages 41-43. I've always wondered about that.

So, on Monday we answer the allusive questions, was Rey trying to posses Annie or not? Unless a bored Hetty stops him before he reaches that point, because if it's not about her and her schemes, she's not interested.

Hm...
It seems that Chapter 41 has indeed changed the tone of the entire comic...
I would expect most future chapters to answer more questions than they raise, like this one.

I like how in Rey's recollection of the event Annie looks so cute and soft, while in her recollection (referring to the original comic) she looks more scrutinising and completely unfazed by the situation.

I just reread Chapter 3. It's really quite chilling and disturbing, particularly the way that the trickster Renynardine plays with Annie's sympathies to get her to stay on the roof with him. Also, I just noticed the detail where Eglamore say's it's been over 5 years since Reynardine had Sivo's body. Since Annie wasn't born yet, it was probably at least 10 years since he took Daniel's body, which makes me wonder if there were other bodies he took in between the two. Doesn't look like we'll get to see that in this chapter though. www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=56Also, in speculating about why Surma went from Eglamore to Anthony, have people talked about how Reynardine played a role in it? Perhaps Eglamore's harsh treatment of the captured demon who had been Surma's friend led her to see Eglamore differently and contributed to their break-up/falling out. In response to Annie's refusal to turn over Reynardine, Donny compares her to Surma, which makes me think that when Reynardine was first captured, Surma stubbornly advocated for him and probably fought with Eglamore and others about his treatment. www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=109And, I couldn't read this page without hearing the Taylor Swift song! Ugh. www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=55

I get the impression that Eglamore lost Surma while he was away training, which, in my head-timeline, precedes Reynardine taking Daniel's body. I base this on his having Sivo as a friend and ally, which happened during his training. Based on the scene with Jones, I think he'd lost Surma already by that point.
Hm. It's probably the trouble with Reynardine that recalled him to the Court in the first place.
