Oh Hetty, u so wacky.
Well, it looks like we're finally getting an answer on whether Renard actually tried to possess Annie or not; this seems to lean towards "yes".

What's that symbol that appears faintly on her forehead? My first thought was Neptune, but I don't know what that symbol would translate to in alchemy terms, if anything.

She seems to get a bit grayer when the symbol appears too, like she's being turned into a zombie or something. No reciprocation from the dots, though. Maybe they really are Cheeto dust.

Wow Hetty, just wow. Why did Renard tell her about all that? Got to say that I'm mystified as to what Renard sees in her. I guess he does have a history of making friends with morally ambiguous supernatural tricksters though.

Good stuff, good stuff. Finally getting some answers that we've been waiting awhile to hear in this chapter. :3

It looks like a combination of oilessence - whatever that is - and phosphorus 1 (it has the double bars, like on her forehead - oilessence has the top part right, but there's only one bar).

Also, I think Renard needs some guy friends in his life. Seriously. He hangs out with little girls all day, everyday. After one deep bro talk, he would realize this relationship is toxic.

I found both "Neptune" and "oil essence" on this picture here. I think it looks more like Oil Essence, but I'm not sure what that means (besides Hetty having an essentially oily personality). edit: ryttu3k beat me to it.

Okay, so she's apparently symbolised by essential oils? ...That got new age pretty quickly!

Neptune seems right according to wikipedia anywayIf she has her own symbol now then it implies she is to become important character then, no?

The only place I've found that has the two words together in the alchemy vein was the wiki article for spagyric: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SpagyricFASCINATING

Good find. Looks like oil essence to me. Oil Essence: Spagyric is a name given to the production of herbal medicines using alchemical procedures. These procedures involve fermentation, distillation and the extraction of mineral components from the ash of the plant. These processes were in use in medieval alchemy generally for the separation and purification of metals from ores (see Calcination), and salts from brines and other aqueous solutions. source > en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SpagyricUnclear what this has to do with Hetty. Could her current body have been manufactured by some etheric process? Is this a metaphor for body-snatching powers, and that is why Renard is attracted to her? Or is the role the clue? What is the chemical reaction between mercury and this?

All I am getting for "spargyric & mercury" and "sulfur & mercury" is a bunch of new-age snake oil medicines.
"As we discussed in our previous article on the Salt level, Spagyrics works with three different aspects of being in plants, each corresponding to a level of being in us. Paracelsus originally devised the Spagyric system for working with plants this way, and he described the three levels as Salt, Mercury, and Sulfur, the body, spirit, and soul.
Mercury is the principle of action, life, change, and balance. Like Mercury the deity, who travels between the worlds, Mercury the principle is a mediator. The Mercury level of being resides between the physical Salt body and the eternal Sulfur soul, and it both fixes the soul in a container of being and enlivens the body with the divine spark.
In plants, Mercury resides in the alcohol- the Spirit in the spirits. Like Mercury himself, alcohol travels between and links both poles of the journey: alcohol is both the product of the breakdown of one plant and the means to break down another.
Alcohol is a sometimes controversial substance in our contact with customers, many of whom prefer not to use it in any way. As we’ve explained to people with this concern, we do respect the personal choice some make not to ingest alcohol in any form, even medicines, but we will not make any alcohol-free preparations, as the results would not be Spagyric."

To go a little more into the Spagyric:
It involves Mercury (water element, associated with Rey in the comic), Sulphur (fire element, associated with Annie) and Salt (earth element)... So who is the salt in this equation?
And the word essentially means "to separate and combine". Hetty sure seems interested in separating Annie and Rey (and I wouldn't be surprised if she was scheming to combine with her for her fire powers, or trying to convince Reynardine to).
Let's hope Hetty and Coyote don't join forces.

While the symbol on her head certainly looks most like the one for oil essence, it also bears certain resemblance to the quicklime symbol (some variants of it, at least... that's the problem, those alchemical symbols can be pretty variable), which I find a good match for Hetty's form (okay, that is just a loose association with ceramics...), but especially her personality (quicklime is the vile caustic stuff that Sherlock Holmes era villains used to dispose of bodies with ^^).
I doubt it has anything to do with Neptune the planet, it was discovered too late to be incorporated into alchemy in some form (not counting modern fauxchemy).
Anyway... is there any running theory about when do those symbols appear? In Rey's case, is it when he uses his powers in some way (either body snatching or shape changing)?

I seem to remember seeing something related to calcium with this symbol... Yes, here it is.So, that would be " quicklime", perhaps. Its caustic nature seems befitting of what we've seen of Hetty's personality so far. (Ninja'd; that's what I get for loitering on the reference sites, I guess...)

I haven't seen this symbol before: I believe gold and lead were on the main entrance of the school, the one near the bridge, and lead is also the symbol of the dragon slayer job, so it can't be Eglamore. (Damn that index is useful...) Urgh, I need new eyes and a new brain. Luckily there are plenty on the side of your head that didn't gaze directly at the offending paragraph, and survived unscathed. As for the brain, I guess you're out of luck, since there's only one.

Yeah, she looks paler, gets those dark patches below her eyes, and her hair even seems to take on a greyish tint. Compare that panel with the others on todays page. Anyways, Renard has been free to do pretty much what he wants for a while now. I hope we learn more about Hetty's past and whether there are others in the same kind of situation, which Hetty seems to have indicated.

If the symbol on her forehead works like the one that appears on Rey whenever he's using his powers, then it's probably not her symbol but Adam's, indicating his possession of her. I hope we'll find out about this Adam by the end of this chapter. Rey has had two different symbols appear on his forehead at different times. One is Antimony's, but the other is either his own or is associated with the body-swapping powers he got from Coyote. I'm going with it being hers due to it matching her personality so well.

As I said in the thread for alchemical symbols, I'm pretty sure that symbol is Oil Essence. Since essential oils are defined by smell or flavour and both can act as powerful mnemonics, I believe that probably defines Hetty's role, at least in this chapter. She's an exposition doll. :-)

A quick flick through symbols.com reveals that it's most likely: - Neptune/Poseidon's trident (can also represent the devil) - Psi - Quateron?! or... - ANTIMONY*gasp* Antimony's Animus Adam is torturing Rey's Anima Hetty!

The symbol I'm looking at for "oil essence" is narrower and does have a line in the middle. The middle line ends at the same height as the side lines and the ends of the stems of the crosses also have what appear to be arrowheads pointing outward on them. Don't forget that there are many equivalent alchemical symbols as well as a few variations of each symbol. It's very probable that both symbols mean "oil essence". It doesn't help that the symbol in the comic isn't very clear, especially at the bottom, but I'm fairly confident that it's "oil essence". Edit: The symbol:

I was thinking about how they became friends, doesn't it seem like scenario where it's more likely that Renard felt sorry for Hetty than Hetty thinking Renard seems like a nice person? Must've happened that way...
