I've been interested in knowing what the rest of the fanbase likes recently for some reason. Just curios what other webcomics people read, what music you like, what TV shows you like, movies etc etc
So for me:
Webcomics:
-Paranatural is the only one I read like clockwork besides Gunnerkrigg Court
Anime:
-Ghost in the Shell: SAC (it may be blasphemous, but I didn't like the films) -Nearly anything by Studio Ghibli, with Princess Mononoke being my favourite -Cowboy Bebop
Cartoons:
-Adventure Time -Gravity Falls -Superjail -Southpark -Futurama -Avatar: TLA and TLoK. Only discovered these last weekend then watched them back to back, quite impressed
Movies:
-V for Vendetta -Watchmen -Fight Club
Music:
-Turisas -Wintersun -Alestorm -Ensiferum -Sonata Arctica
TV shows:
-House
Games:
-Half-Life -Portal -STALKER -Fallout -TF2
So lets see what everyone else likes

Oh, fun! Webcomics: - Ava's Demon. (I highly recommend this one, it reminds me a good deal of Gunnerkrigg and has amazing artwork.) - Scandinavia and the World. (Denmark is obviously the best of them - The Abominable Charles Christopher (This one is the only webcomic I consider on par with Gunnerkrigg, though sadly it doesn't update more than once a week. Ava's Demon is their closest runner-up.) - Rice Boy. (I never actually finished this one, but it was really odd and quite good and I'll have to go back and do so sometime.) - Unsounded. - Order of the Stick. Print comics: - Bone. - The Sandman. - Calvin and Hobbes. TV shows: - Doctor Who. (Kinda. It's really good and all, I just haven't had time to catch up.) - Sherlock. - Game of Thrones. Movies: - Black Swan. - The Nightmare Before Christmas. - Se7en. - Nolan's Batman Trilogy. - Other great stuff. Music: - The Rumour Said Fire. - Other Lives. - Jethro Tull. - Pink Floyd. - Mew. - Katie Melua. Books: - A Song of Ice and Fire. (A Game of Thrones is just the first book, this is the name of the book series.) - Anything written by Neil Gaiman. (Neverwhere, Coraline and Fragile Things - the latter is a collection of short stories - would be my highlights.) - Rendezvous with Rama. - The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. - The Discworld series. Games: - Borderlands. (1 and 2.) - Portal. - League of Legends. - Bioshock. (I've yet to play the others, but I bought the first after playing through Infinite.) - A bit of Magic the Gathering and a bit of Diablo 3.

Be advised: highly abridged Magazines:-Time -Newsweek -Game Informer -Harpers (God-tier. One of the best monthly collections of fiction and non fiction still in print.) Books:- Street Boys by Lorenzo Carcaterra (picked up off a rack while waiting for someone to finish fixing an ATM. turned out to be great, so I bought it.) - All Things Bright and Beautiful and the rest of Dr. James Harriet's work. - The Life and Death of Great American Cities by Jane Jacobs (much drier than the title suggests, it's about architecture and civil planning) - World War Z by Max Brooks - The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien - Hatcher's Notebook - Artemis Fowl- The Third World War by General Sir John Hackett - Inheritance Trilogy by Christopher Paolini - Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Doug Adams - The War Nerd by "Gary Brecher" (and all of John Dolan's other geopolitics columns) - A Short History of the World by H.G. Wells - A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking - Selected Military Writings of Mao Tse-Tung, as well as his Talks At The Yenan Forum on Literature and Art- Letter to a Comrade on our Organizational Tasks by V. I. Lenin - Capital by Marx - The Civil War in the United States by Karl Marx and Freidrich Engels - The Art of War by Sun Tzu - A People's History of the United States of America by Howard Zinn (should be required reading in high school) - Varjack Paw by S.F. Said - Cuckcoo's Egg by Cliff Stoll -anything Terry Pratchett has ever written, or will ever write, god bless him. -similarly with Hunter S. Thompson, I felt real sadness when I realized I had just finished everything he ever published before he shot himself. The things he wrote in his football columns in the days just after 9/11 have proved blood-chillingly accurate. -reluctantly I will put the Ender's Game series here, but Orson Scott Card is a tool and I don't wish to encourage him. Webcomics:-Scary Go Round -The Perry Bible Fellowship -Johnny Wander -Hark! A Vagrant -Gunshow -Overcompensating -Nedroid -Dresden Codak -What Birds Know -Octopus Pie -Ava's Demon -Rice Boy & anything else Evan Dahm decides to do for the rest of his life. -Good old GKC Anime:-Hotaru no haka, known in the west as "Grave of the Fireflies" -Ghost in the Shell -Kino no Tabi -Allison and Lillia (stopped watching when Allison had kids, it started to drag a bit) -FLAG -Last Exile -Cat Shit One -The Sky Crawlers Cartoons:-Venture Brothers -Super Jail -Avatar: TLA and TLoK (I don't tear up much, but 'leaves from the vine' gets me every time ) Movies:-The Dark Knight -No Country For Old Men -Public Enemies -Reservoir Dogs -Pulp Fiction -Inglorious Basterds -Rum Diary -The Godfather (one and two) -V for Vendetta -Lord of War -Watchmen -Matrix series (I like all three equally. Cometh at me brother.) -Fight Club -Inception -American History X -Saving Private Ryan -Band of Brothers -The Pacific -everything Pixar has made so far except Cars 2, which was a blatant cash-in for the happy meal toys -Full Metal Jacket -The Sting -Gran Torino -The Big Lebowski -Fargo -How To Train Your Dragon (incredible kids movie, protag actually looses his leg by the end which sealed the deal, ruined by the TV series) -District 9 -9 -Bourne series (new one was o.k. but not great) Music:-I think I could make a shorter list of what I don't like. It would still be too long, though. I get songs individually rather than in album form because all bands have good and bad moments. TV shows:-Walking Dead -House -Breaking Bad (RRRNGGG WE HAVE TO COOOOOOOOOOOOOOK JESSIE, RIGHT NOW!!!) -Monk and Psych for a while, mostly while I was bedridden for a month after surgery. I even watched... Scrubs. *shivers* Notably Absent From Previous List:-Game of Thrones Games:*opens Steam* -ArmA 2 w/ ACE and ACRE mods, occasionally i44 mod whenever my steam group is playing it -ArmA 3 alpha -DayZ -FTL -Kerbal Space Program a.k.a. Jeb's Discount Orbital Hauling -Bioshock -GTA -Company of Heroes -Portal -Total War -Mirror's Edge -Civilization (mostly V now, got started on IV) -IL 2 Sturmovik -Terraria -Minecraft -Hitman -Eve Online (I don't play anymore, massive time sink. Basically a second job in space) -Fallout 3 and onwards -Cortex Command -Half Life series (Gaben, why do you make me wait for #3? Whyyyy) -Garry's Mod -S.T.A.L.K.E.R. -Dead Island -The Elder Scrolls -Age of Empires -Deus Ex: Human Revolution -Men of War -Receiver -Red Orchestra -Dishonored -5 Card Hold 'em, minimum of 2 dollar buy in Comics:-Calvin and Hobbes -The Walking Dead -Blankets, Habibi, and pretty much all of Craig Thompson's Work

I remember that used to be the place to find maps and texture packs before Garry really came into the money and put up a significant amount of dedicated hosting for it. I think I forgot my usename/password combo around the same time I stopped posting on Something Awful.

I really *liked* MS paint adventures & homestuck when reading them (especially as a big adventure game fan) but the problem was that i found it too much hard work, if that makes sense? I think i'd have to sit down and consume it all over a free week... or two...
|
|
|
Post by Mezzaphor on May 17, 2013 17:07:49 GMT
Homestuck is a wild rollercoaster ride, but the early pages are not very indicative of what comes later. Andrew Hussie was following reader suggestions and just goofing around, and the results read like they're trying to scare away as many new readers as possible.

I followed about halfway into Problem Sleuth and enjoyed that thoroughly, and I think I kept up with HS updates until the end of Act II or something, but I stopped caring basically. Unfortunately, it was starting to feel like a chore to keep up with it. No doubt that Hussie is talented, though.
