I am a little unclear; As forest medium doesn't she have to stay in the forest? I was imagining some sort of jungle commute... Ysengrin was the previous forest medium, and he left the forest, so Antimony probably doesn't have to stay inside of Gillitie Wood. Also, I'm a new reader, and I have to say it's a pretty dramatic switch in pace between reading 600 pages a day, and having to wait a couple of days before the next page is done. What is the average waiting time for a page, anyway?

It's weird that the headmaster would be fuming. Either his acting skills are even better than I thought, or we're completely misreading this? Either way I'm having a hard time picturing that. He realized he left his Inner Scrutiny off. I also like how Annie's idea of showmanship is setting herself on fire. Maybe, she just wanted to make a point? About foregone conclusions and all that. Also, just saying, I would love a porthole in my dorm room. Along with a giant crab creature floating behind it and using it to check on the dorm sometimes?

He got outmaneuvered by Coyote. He intended to get Annie out of Court-Forest politics, instead she's in it and working for the other guy. To make matters worse, Smith supported and assisted Annie - meaning that the very person whom the Headmaster chose for Court Medium acted against him.

I suppose the shady suggestion of having Reynard returned was nothing more, however it's still worrisome. The relaxing shift in the chapter is nice, but I hope the Headmaster's behavior is explained soon. But to be honest, Smitty seems to be a better fit as the Court medium and Annie seems to fit better as the forest medium. I wholeheartedly agree.

So, how long before Coyote starts stealing Annie's memories? Anybody want to take bets?

So, how long before Coyote starts stealing Annie's memories? Anybody want to take bets? Two milliseconds at most. I wonder how many memories Coyote's already stolen from Ysengrin. Must be a lot, if that is why he is going crazy. Also, I'm a new reader, and I have to say it's a pretty dramatic switch in pace between reading 600 pages a day, and having to wait a couple of days before the next page is done. It's possible I'm just not the type of person that can even manage to keep themselves to a schedule.

It's not unrealistic to have a large comic buffer. He has the make updates at the same average speed with a 10000-comic buffer as he would with a 2-comic buffer. In fact, with a larger buffer, he has longer to catch back up if he falls behind.

Okay, I totally forgot that Kat and Annie agreed to share a room at the start of this chapter. When I first saw her picking up boxes on this page, I worried that she was actually moving to the forest!

At one point he stated that if he were to fall dead right then, the comic would still go on for three months. Since I begun following the comic, around chapter 5, if my memory still serves me, he never missed an update. The very few times the comic was minimally late it were due to server issues.

I can verify Tom's bulletproof schedule. Others search in ancient texts or climate shifts, but for me, I'll know that the world is coming to an end when Gunnerkrigg doesn't update.
His ability to consistently, reliably stick to MWF @ 8:00 GMT for years is one of the reasons why Gunnerkrigg is so well-loved in the webcomics community.

As much as I like the lighting, I can't help but feel that either the room should be less orange, or that the girls (and Reynardine) should be more orange.
Artistic license, I guess. Unless maybe the room actually IS that orange?

(Also, only 600? ) Also, just saying, I would love a porthole in my dorm room. I wouldn't. In fact, I wouldn't actually want to live in any dorm room Annie's been in so far. (Especially the first two; great heights terrify me. ) At one point he stated that if he were to fall dead right then, the comic would still go on for three months. Heh, one of the other comics I read would go on for longer with a daily update schedule... (Of course, it has nowhere near as much artistic quality as this.)

Thank god there is at least one exception out there. Aaron Diaz is down to one new panel of Dresden Codak every 1 to 1.5 months. I know each page is a masterpiece, but you'd think he would devote a little more time to it. If you're going to have merch, you should hold yourself to at least a moderately business-like standard.

Are we sure the headmaster was actually angry? He may have known his strong negative reaction would push Annie TOWARD accepting the position, rather than deter her. We know she doesn't exactly respect his authority, and she was already upset by how he had chosen to deliver the declaration that she was not being made medium as well as banned from the Forest.
What he'd get out of manipulating her to accept, I'm not sure. Though I'm pretty sure Annie-as-medium is a whole lot better than Ysengrin for the Court.

The room is not orange. I noticed the same issue, but I guess it's just an artistic thing, so that we can focus on the characters properly. Are we sure the headmaster was actually angry? He may have known his strong negative reaction would push Annie TOWARD accepting the position, rather than deter her. Unless he plotted the whole affair with Coyote beforehand, there is no way that he could have known that Annie would even be offered the position of the Forest's Medium. I honestly don't think that what took place in the ceremony had anything more complex behind it than the Headmaster wanting to take something away from Coyote as a display of power, and Coyote responding in kind. Those two are the respective alpha males of their own domains, after all. There's no need to assume a complex scheme that requires intricate knowledge of the opponent's future moves, when a simple explanation suffices.

We know she doesn't exactly respect his authority, and she was already upset by how he had chosen to deliver the declaration that she was not being made medium as well as banned from the Forest. The headmaster didn't rely on HIS authority, though. His first reaction was to pass the topic over to Jones, whose opinion Annie does respect. When Jones chose not to dissuade her, he tried to make an argument for her "safety", and couldn't have expected Smitty (and Ysengrin) to rise to her support. I think his anger lies at least as much with them as it does with Annie. I think the Headmaster's motivations are a little more complex, given that the Court is unhappy with Annie's comfortable standing with the Forest and status as a loose-cannon. Coyote knows a ruse when he sees one, and seems confident that the Court is up to something. Given Coyote's title of trickster, I think "making things more interesting" is a more likely motivation than strictly displaying dominance.

There's no need to assume a complex scheme that requires intricate knowledge of the opponent's future moves, when a simple explanation suffices. This is not consistent with Jones's description of how the court sees the forest. Rather, I think the headmaster wanted Renard, and the person in charge of him to have harder access to the forest.

I love how badly the headmaster's plan backfired. His meddling actually ended up making things better for everyone except himself. Everything went better than expected for Annie. Smitty is totally fine with this situation. Parley gets to be Smitt's bodyguard and eventually court protector. But, for the headmaster, everything is going horribly horribly wrong. You'd actually think he would be happy about this, though. I mean, both mediums are human. You would think that would make him happy, even if he sees Annie as a loose cannon. And both mediums are friends with each other. Come on, how is that not good for the court?I also like how Annie's idea of showmanship is setting herself on fire. Funny contradiction within your post. I'm still amazed of how fast people forget Jones' words "You must be hiding something...", and how easily people take it for sure that headmaster's (or Court's) intention was to isolate Annie. It seems utterly incredible that the Court would have aimed at taking Annie (and Renard) out of the game altogether, not only to me, but to everybody in that room in the actual comic strip. Taken that that then was not Court's intent, and that pretty much we all were able to foresee Coyote making a move once Annie is liberated from the future Court medium post, it is easy to deduce that this situation should not have overly surprised the Court either and thus is not viewed negatively by the Court - or by the headmaster, for that matter. Only possibility why they would have considered that to be surprising, would be that they had thought that Annie is strictly in their hands and has no choice to go to the forest. However, two things go against this: 1. If they actually wanted to go that way, they could have simply used authority - in a sense, Annie ultimately had no choice, after all, Annie is their student and basically in their custody, and they could have, if they wanted, decided to keep her simply in school. Now they did nothing to the effect. 2. By now, with all Annie's trips to forest and Coyote constantly inviting her, the possibility that Annie makes a move to the Forest side must have been at the top of their heads when they have pondered this situation. Concerning headmaster's "acting", notice that Jones has implied his regular nonchalant act to be a show for the creatures of the forest, and that here, though he does not precisely jump in the air reading the dossiers, he seems much more interested and much less a "leathery bag of bones", despite the events being much more ordinary and supposedly less exciting than a visit by crazy etheric beasts of the Forest. I do not claim to know what was their intent, only that you do not know it and that it certainly was not to take Annie and Renard out of the Court-Forest-game. I suppose their plan on Annie has something to do with his father and that one chapter in which Zimmy punched him. But much more importantly, that this was really just headmaster's choice backfiring would presume that he and the whole deciding organ called the Court would be merely painfully stupid and completely unaware of possibilities of their own as well as of others. If they simply wanted to isolate Annie and Renard, then Tom owes us an explanation. Another question is: how come are things better than expected for Annie? She doesn't seem to see it that way herself. For a good reason as she remembers the matters with Ysengrin quite well. If the court is not to be trusted, Coyote and Ysengrin are more so. Also, Smitty was pretty much far from being fine with this situation.

I think we're all missing a pretty important point here: Renard doesn't actually know the headmaster. He's just "the headmaster man"
Granted, we know who the Headmaster is. But shouldn't this put our perception of Renard's role into a different perspective?

But shouldn't this put our perception of Renard's role into a different perspective? What different perspective are you thinking of? I noticed that too - and it confirms to me that Ren isn't working with the Court's inner circle. It would also seem to me that most of the people we've met are also not working with that circle - which made the decision to go with Smitty rather than Annie. Who are they? What are they up to? Looking forward to finding out.

Must be a lot, if that is why he is going crazy. Who says that he hasn't already? Can Coyote steal Annie's memories? I think the answer is more than likely no. Here's why: 1) Coyote thinks that man has the ability to shape the world with his/her thoughts, make the world turn, even if we are diseased.. Could Coyote mess with what, in his mind, created him? Even if he is wrong in his theory, given that his thoughts make help more powerful than any one else in the comic, if he thinks he cannot, would he even try? 2) Annie's mostly human. If anything, I do wonder if Annie winds up persuing a line of conversation with Ys about what happened. I don't see this happening for a very long time, but if she did, I wonder how that would really affect Ys. Would Ys be able to regain his stolen memories?

Looking forward to finding out. No one. Jonathan didn't inform James. If you use the state analogy it's as if the big boss announced "We decided this one will be our new Minister of External Affairs" and his choice was a surprise for the Minister of Defence who will work with the new guy closer than the others. That would be nuts... unless this was royal "We" or this means the same as Uncle Joe's "with camrades, we counciled and decided" catchphrase: "I asked them and then decided it my own way". ;D For all we know, that's exactly what happened.

Actually, I think a better metaphor would be not informing the generals of the choice. That would be a bit more reasonable, if still a tad odd... Honestly, the only person we know whom should have been informed ahead of time was Jones. I mean, why did you even wait for her reccomendation if you're just going to ignore it? She deserves that much, at least.
