Aww, beaten by a hair. Oh well, so then. At least this isn't the end of the chapter, so hopefully we'll see everyone's reactions.

Ah, poor, impulsive fire-head girl. So much fun.

Spectacular art on this page. Especially love the tonal nature of the contours of Annie's clothing. And that face! Gah! The souls I would sell for that kind of talent!

So was her hair tied up to restrain her firey-ness or was the pulling down of the hair ties just for a more dramatic approach of accepting to be forest medium?

Shoulderpads and big hair: Gunnerkrigg does the 1980s.

She just dives head-first into these things, doesn't she?

Talent = almost eight years of hard work. I just had to point that out. Though I agree wholeheartedly that the artwork here is gorgeous, it just keeps getting better.

I think she looks more grown up in the last panel than before. A personality-shaping event!

Now I'm wondering if Surma ever did this, and if so did it look like her head had exploded thanks to her curly hair?

I in no way meant to belittle the amount of time, blood, sweat, tears, and sanity that goes into these things. I don't believe in "natural talent," so for me talent and skill are interchangeable. At three in the morning on this fine February day, I have forgotten that it is not quite so for others.

I think Annie tends to keep her hair tied up when she's more restrained but not to keep her restrained? If that makes sense? Maybe she took it out and flame on'd either because Coyote called her by her fire head nickname or out of respect for her new position. She's not really showing off, she may also be doing it in a diplomatic 'screw you guys, I'm going forest' kind of way to the court. It's weird she's still using her blinker stone after her encounter with the numbnu--fairies to project fire. Maybe she was only able to do anything without it because they helped her out. I know she uses it to spy on the robots if she needs to but I guess she can't project or needs to be riled up to project fire on her own.

I think she looks more grown up in the last panel than before. A personality-shaping event! Definitely heavy on symbolism. Funny how many of Tom's metaphors are women's beauty accessories. The hairband of +1 straightness, the purple eye-shadow, and now the hair clip... Makes you wonder.

I am in love with Tom's art. That's a brilliant awesome panel. *gets all warm and fuzzy inside
So will Anne now live in the forest or will she still live in the court? Will she still attend lessons?

I assume you mean her hair ties, but you're definitely right! And don't forget that light blue hair clip that she lost in the Annan waters years before.

aha, now I know what's bugging me: dl.dropbox.com/u/27783795/images/gcilldoit.jpgThe last panel seems just a little bit stretched, vertically; it makes her jacket arms look especially wide and her head oddly tall, compared to previous panels (see #1157 or #1148). Trace out the oval of her head, it's very tall!

This is the second time she's abandoned Kat without thinking. Dunno if I'd count that as her growing up.

Trace out the oval of her head, it's very tall! Yes but she looks much younger with it squished like that. I'd call it visual metaphor. Maybe not 100% technically correct but the distortion brings a certain gravitas.

And, okay, it's a moment of character growth, but that isn't supposed to literally give you two inches in the time it takes to pull your hairband off.

But at least this time, she's around other people before she makes her decision and after. She's still gotta go back to her room at some point or talk to the adults, two of them being Kat's parents. I'm at least hoping that she's going to discuss this with Kat, maybe even invite her to the forest if she's going there. Annie has been around Kat's cool robotic experiments and all that great stuff, I think it's high time Kat should experience the forest. Lots of birds in the forest, Kat~

Is Annie really taking the time to think this through in order to come to a mature, rational decision? No! For all her dressing up physically and mentally, for everything she's seen and been through, for all of the "changes," she still has a really big head. She has a whole bunch more growing up to do.

I feel my new avatar is exceptionally relevant to this page. That stupid headmaster will just have to deal with it, because Annie does what she bloody wants.
