Instincts, emotions and desires aren't arbitrary either, they appeared in humans after thousands of years of natural selection based on advantageous social effect. That the social effects they are based on are considered "advantageous" is an arbitrary selection. Or at least the principles behind them are, when you get right down to the root of it. One thing may be proven by other things, but it all has to spring from somewhere. And when you reach the one thing which is not based on other things, what is that if not arbitrary?

However, something that is caused by an arbitrary happening is not itself arbitrary because it is reacting to that thing, and reaction is not arbitrary, quite the opposite.
