That face is worthy of an avatar.
Also, I don't think the chapter will end on friday.
IIRC, it always ends on a monday, bonus comic on wednesday and next chapter title on friday

Also, I kinda doubt the whole mystery will be cleared. I guess Jones just was... for as long as she remembers, and that would be all. Somehow it doesn't sound to me as a let-down. This is what I've been inclined to believe, ever since we stopped seeing humans. Edit: Also calling it now, next page will be "Tomorrow" with Annie talking to Renard and Kat about Jones without actually revealing what she is. Page after that will be "A Week Later" going back to Jones and the Headmaster preparing to announce the medium. Then, "Years later" with Jones receiving an invitation to George and Smitface's wedding. She pulls the party hat out of a drawer and looks at it with her Jones expression. AND THEN, "Several Years Later" wherein Jones stares at a trollface image macro, unamused. Bonus page is Jones party time, just like Mort party time except Jones puts on some sunglasses as the sun goes supernova.

Annie's mind: "Welp, definitely an indestructable ancient alien robot" ftfy See, now my thoughts were shifted more toward the distant future and that Jones was sent back in time to research the world's history. Maybe.

That might just be the largest time skip I've ever witnessed. I'm still a bit dizzy from the relativistic effects.

I laughed at the "Click here to learn about the Gunnerkrigg Court. " bit The setup was long, but the punchline is perfect. ;D Annie has no idea she's even holding that tea. That's what they call... spaced out! Annie has no idea she's even holding that tea. It's not like this can give her burns.

I would pay my weight in gold to have the bonus page be Jones wrestling a Tyrannosaurus while the yucatan asteroid is about to strike.

Annie realizes that the substance in her cup is almost, but not quite, entirely unlike tea.

Man honestly, for me it would be enough if this (what we've seen) is Jones's origin story. She emerged as-is from the magma of our forming planet. Done.
You guys are so desperate for Tom to attach some sort of word to what she is. If he just threw out the word "golem", would that suddenly satisfy everyone? Most mythical supernatural beings don't have any more of a specific origin than this.

The Earth soul ?... Maybe... Not "mother", not "elemental", but... soul...
By the way, awesome page. Awesome art work. Awesome everything about this comic.

Great ending.
And no, it's no longer better reading backwards. And this is so "Jones" to just tell her the truth straight out. she doesn't care.
This also reveals the answer to the question of why Jones had a human shape before humans existed. These were all Annie's imagination. Not the events, but the visual pictures. She knows what Jones looks like *now* and puts her in the past situations as they were described.
in reality we don't know if her hair ever lengthens, or if her form has stayed the same exactly. It may not be an important point - just that Jones goes "way back".
That's what I get from the final panel.

Hopefully we'll find out if this is actually the case sometime soon.

Long setup for a gag. Worth it.
Actually, the whole thing is funnier now that I'm imagining it as Jones' self-narration. I'm guessing Annie went into rictus right around "And then I fashioned my half naked body into a rudimentary mallet, using the hideous buffalo thing's momentum to dissolve its brain against my forehead and breasts. I was then part of the tribe."

Aaaaah wait didn't Coyote say to ask Jones about the stars in the night sky: www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=1076MAYBE JONES IS A METEORITE OR SOME OTHER SPACE OBJECT and then there's this weird humans-think-she's-human thing. or something. Or maybe she's just Jones. #alwaysworks

Though that then begs the question of what exactly she told Annie to conjure this image: www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=1097Thinking of the whole chapter as Annie's visualizations of what Jones is telling her implies that she went into some specific detail talking about Jimmy Jims. (Which, if true is where I predict Annie first started making that face, and it stuck like that, just as our mothers always told us it would).

Though that then begs the question of what exactly she told Annie to conjure this image: *night at home on the couch* What's more interesting to the story is not her relationship with JimmyJims (she'll always be there for him *rolls eyes*) - but did she tell Annie the new medium had been decided and if she is it. It is part of this sequence of images.

Well, the reason Annie is even talking to Jones is to ask her how she can fit Coyote's theory despite being older than humanity. I would expect to get that answered. But yeah as an answer to what she is, someone who emerged intact from the creation of the world is a pretty complete one.

If this is all a visual representation of things she is actually saying to Annie, then why does she even bother at all with Eglamore (as it's not really relevant to Annie), and why does she start on a non-sequiter of "I decided on the new court Medium" to the question of "what are you?" Trying to imagine the dialogue that caused these mental images on Annie's part doesn't fit well for the early images, though once you get past a few decades it does fit nicely.

If she started out as "I am your guardian, I was Eglamore's before, etc. etc." it could be plausible. After all it IS Jones, and she is quite candid regarding most things unless, I'm sure, there is a really good reason to not state the fact. Who knows, maybe Surma knew Jones' history as the medium prior :]
