Oh come on. Now, time travel really seems like the only real option. I doubt she's the trilobite's psychopomp. Or she's an actual God. I'm going with that theory now Me too. Maybe J' is Gaia? P.S.: Genius arc.

Whoaaaa, this whole arc has just been incredibly poetic: - Jones has been walking on this planet since at least the earlier lifeforms, bearing witness as each new era begins and ends - One day, she discovers a species in the same image as her. Either out of curiosity or for other reasons, she decided to start living with this species. Initially she must have had a pretty high standing, as no doubt those hunters must have held her in high regard. - But she had to bear witness to the successive rise and fall of civilization, as was the case with the burning of Rome. - And as human civilization progressed, her own standing degraded. People started to treat her as a witch, for example, and so she had to change her identity every time, trying to blend in for as long as possible, only to be forced to leave for various reasons like being considered a fraud.
Is there a reason why she eventually seemed to favor raising children (which she chose to do at least twice now)? Perhaps it is a more discreet profession, so people can't track her as easily from official documents, or perhaps children are more accepting and she can stay while the family keeps her secret.
Right now, in Gunnerkrigg at least, she seems to have finally found a place where people can accept her unusual circumstances. Jones looks pretty emotionless, but all the while she seemed strangely attached to the people whom she stayed with, and who eventually had to pass away.

Just imagine that. You live alone for millions of years and then all of a sudden there are people like you. No wonder Jones has been hanging out with humanity - things finally got interesting. What if she observed evolution happening over the eons, and one day thought "I wonder if I can shape life in my image." Bam! Humans are a result of Jones' selective breeding. Exactly. Jones doesn't look human, humans look Jones.

My two cents: we see her as a human because we choose to. Her real form is Too Much for Us to Comprehend (TM). I'll put two moxanna points on this guess ..

Maybe Jones has been playing Minecraft all this time. She accidentally got buried in sand here, but she has immortality on so she's fine, just stuck.

So the part where Annie thinks that Jones couldn't have been created by man is probably because she existed before them. But, like some have suggested, the myths work irrelevant to time. I think that's the most we can garner out of this that makes sense.

Since she's stuck down in the dirt at the bottom of the ocean... will the next strip show how she got there in the first place?
Maybe she was, er, formed underground? Wild spec time woo except I'm just throwing that out there. I have nothing to go off of but the strange location of Jones here -- and the Mother Earth theory, I suppose.
Dang Tom, where ARE you going with this? :/

Well... if its the silurian period, there are some early hominids (Adipithecus Ramidus and possibly australothipicus anamensis) but if she were dreamed up by either of those, its pretty damn unlikely she'd look the way she does. So I'm going to go with whoever it was earlier who said that Jones isn't in mankind's image but that humans are in her image.

I love that idea, but wouldn't that contradict her assumed role of an observer? Purposely manipulating a species to create, what, companions? I know she's attached herself to various humans but she doesn't strike me as someone who really needs company. Or perhaps she isn't a flat (i.e. non-changing) character after all, and was once more emotional (i.e. craving the company of others like her).

Perhaps she was orbiting the Sun, and then her body mass began attracting particles from her surroundings, so that Earth gradually formed around her. Eventually magma streams, tectonic movements and erosion brought her up to the ocean floor.

My hypothesis: Jones is from the future and had to come around again the long way like Marvin. I like this idea. Didn't he outlive their universe by like thirty-seven times or something? In other news: I'm quite enjoying the progression of this chapter.

There are no hominids in the Silurian. Nor any other mammal. Nor any other tetrapods, nor even insects, the few lands animals at this point are mostly arachnids (and probably various kinds of worms).

Two questions:
1) How far in the past is Jones' genesis? What about when Earth was a spinning ball of molten lava. Or 20 femtoseconds after the bigbang?
2) How was Jones' contact with the first man she met? Did she knew he was a different kind of being, or did she go "Hey, pal, glad to see there are more hyperdurable anthropomorphic beings around" (friendly pat on the back) "Not hyperdurable, then" (slightly raises eyebrow.)

I think the answer is obvious; Jones is one of those characters, like Merlin in T.H. White's The Once and Future King, who was born in the remote future and is living life backwards through time.

My two cents: we see her as a human because we choose to. Her real form is Too Much for Us to Comprehend (TM). Probably true, but there are no humans to observe her now except us, so if this is true, she's breaking the fourth wall. Is Jones in her true form when nobody is looking? Quantum Jones? I'm getting more and more intrigued by this chapter. I am hoping for some seriously mindblowing abswers now, such as, I don't know... -Jones is four dimensional, and as such, exists in all points of time simultaneously; -Somehow Jones IS the fourth wall; -Not even Jones knows what Jones is, but it thinks it's people.

2) How was Jones' contact with the first man she met? I'd like to see that scene, because I bet it was something more than just a pat in the back that she got in mind in that encounter. ;D

Maybe we will see her being kicked off of some alien planet... for being too alien there ? That has potential: - "Ger'off my planet, witch!" Tries to skewer her with a laser spear. Looks gobsmacked at the first bent laser spear in the history of laser weapons. Phones Lucasfilms for a refund. They say it's Disney's problem now.

I feel like this is the last update showing Jones at progressively earlier points in time. We've got the message that she's much older than humanity, any more would be redundant. The next update should either snap back to the present (if Tom's being mean), or jump back to something significantly different, like Jones being cast out of heaven and falling to Earth, or Jones observing the formation of the universe.
I agree with the idea that just because Jones is old doesn't mean she wasn't created by human belief. Coyote was present at the creation of the universe, remember - he set the stars in the sky. Most gods predate humanity in their own myths - there's no reason this stuff wouldn't work retroactively.

Now we know what Llanwellyn meant when Jones said (of Ysengrin's tree armor) that she's "never seen anything quite like it" and he replied
"Coming from you, that troubles me greatly".

What if... humanity arose from Jones' belief? Jones: "Somewhere there are others like me ... except that they don't have to be here forever." Enter humans, Jones makes friends with them, then they all just die one by one. There are more and more of them, but they keep dying. Somehow Jones is alone once again even in the crowd.
